Introducing Demitri Fiscus!

After graduating from North Bucombe High School, Demitri attended Western Carolina University (WCU) . Demitri worked for the Asheville Police Department after graduating from WCU. During his free time he enjoys working out at the gym, spending time with his dog, and remodeling his cabin.

Get Your Toter at Town Hall!
To assist our crews and help to resolve the issues of overweight cans, the Town has purchased toter garbage cans (pictured here) for re-sale to the public. Retail price for a comparable can is $65-$70; the Town’s cost for town residents is $45 per toter and includes delivery to the resident’s home and future maintenance of the lid, wheels, and axle. When a homeowner needs to add or replace their garbage can, the Town encourages its citizens to consider purchasing a toter to speed our garbage collection and more importantly to save the backs of our hard-working sanitation staff.

For additional information, please call the Public Works Department at (828) 645-0606 and speak with Kara Shea. If you wish to purchase a toter, please come to Town Hall to arrange payment and delivery.

News from Public Works
New water fountain at Lake Louise!
In our continuing efforts to improve our town’s parks, the Public Works staff recently installed a new water fountain along the walking trail at Lake Louise Park. This fountain is located near the restrooms, where the walking trail around the park intersects with the crosswalk from Highland Street. With its location near the trail intersection and playground, this should be a welcome addition at the park for walkers, runners, children and parents.

Leaf mulch is still available!
In October, the Public Works Department began advertising that it has a good supply of aged, decomposed leaves from previous years of leaf collections. Although 20 or so citizens have taken advantage of the free mulch, there remains quite a bit of this material ready for use on gardens, landscaping, or lawn top dressing. Anyone interested can visit the Public Works Facility at 8am during the week and we will load the free mulch on your truck or trailer.

Leaf pickup season has arrived!
With the arrival of fall comes our leaf collection season. From October 17 through December 13, Public Works staff will be collecting leaves that are raked to the curb or edge of the street. This collection is scheduled with the goal to pick up leaves throughout town every week; however, amount of fallen leaves, weather for raking, equipment maintenance, and other issues sometimes affects the schedule. Town residents are asked to rake only leaves to the curb for pickup by our vacuum trucks – limbs, children’s toys, dead shrubbery, and other larger items can clog or break the vacuum mechanism and cause delays in meeting our goal of weekly pickup.

The Town of Weaverville hosts an annual Citizens' Academy to promote open dialogue and provide the community with education about the workings of town government. Any resident is welcome to participate. The curriculum covers current town programs, services, policies, procedures, plus a "behind the scenes" look at how Weaverville's government operates.

The Weaverville Citizens' Academy offers citizens insight into how the town functions with workshop sessions led by town department heads, town staff, and elected officials. Most sessions are held at the given department, which allows department staff to provide a tour. An overview of the department functions, along with a question-and-answer session at the end of each program are also part of each session.

Students of the Weaverville Citizens' Academy are given a foundation of knowledge regarding town government and services. This foundation and interaction with the town's key department staff creates a stronger, informed community, which makes it easier for the town government to function smoothly. Sessions are held once per month, January through July, every third Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The award of certificates and final wrap-up of the annual Weaverville Citizens' Academy is held in July.

In order to graduate, participants are expected to attend at least five of the seven sessions and attend one Weaverville Town Council meeting. Application to the program is required. Applications may be sent to Weaverville Town Manager Selena Coffey via mail at P.O. Box 338, Weaverville, NC 28787, or via email at scoffey@weavervillenc.org. Applications may also be hand-delivered to the Weaverville Town Hall, 30 South Main Street.
