“The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility- these three forces are the very nerve of education.”

Senior Project Donation Request
|
Hello WSSD community,
My name is Daichi Caverly and I am a senior at the high school Colina Campus. As many of you may already know, us seniors all do a senior project that we work on for much of the year and then present to the community in February or March. As a part of my project, I am trying to start a composting program here at the high school. I will be working with the kitchen and my fellow students to make sure that our food waste will be used to create healthy soil for the future gardens of the high school. To do this we need containers to collect the food waste in. Ideally, I am looking for six, five to six-gallon buckets with lids and carrying handles. A good example of what we are looking for is the Behrens 6-Gallon Galvanized Steel Locking-Lid Can, which can be purchased for $14.94 (for one) at Walmart. There are sure to be similar buckets at other hardware stores as well. If someone is willing to donate these it would be VERY much appreciated by me and the high school as well. We would like to get these buckets by November 1st. If you have questions or want to donate please contact me at
daichicaverly1@icloud.com.
Thank you and have a good week.

Math Tutoring and SAT Prep for High School Students
|
I believe that all students can improve their math skills under the right conditions and for many learners this means working in a 1:1 setting. It takes a lot of wisdom to know when you need support and to ask for it! I welcome the opportunity to provide that support.
For SAT prep in math, I help students to understand the test sections, test taking strategies, as well as set and manage a study/prep schedule. Using a readily available prep book, I walk students through a thorough review of the content in small sections. In order to get familiar with the SAT style of math questions, we will do a few practice problems together in each section and the rest are assigned for homework. I can help explain to a student why they missed a problem or help them to understand the worked solutions that are in the back of the book. As it gets closer to test time, we will switch to practice tests and improving speed.

Are you reaching your full scrip potential?
See this quick formula below to find out:
How much do you spend on:
Groceries per month $_____
Gas per month $_____
Online shopping per month $_____
(i.e. Amazon, Target, Itunes, Uber, Home Depot, Gap...etc)
Let us say you spend per month:
$800 on Groceries from Jimbos
$500 on gas from Arco
$500 online, mostly from Amazon
$800 x 6%= $48
$500 x 1.5%= $7.5 (if you buy in increments of $250, the rebate is 2.5%)
$500 x 3%= $15
Total rebates earned: $70.50 for ONE MONTH!
|
|
Each WSSD Family has a minimum requirement of $220 rebate dollars to generate during the yearly Scrip Session, May 1- April 30. If this example above looks like a similar scenario to yours, it would only take you 3 months to reach your $220 goal!
If you spend half that much, it would only take you 6 months!
For families from 1st to 12th grade, any rebate dollars you generate over the $220 goes directly to your child's 8th & 11th grade trips!
The key is to spend a consistent amount every month buying scrip for your everyday needs...then after you get bit by the "scrip bug" you can think of scrip for gifts and a whole lot more!
Stay the course my friends, scrip can be a lot of fun and provide huge funds for the school, your class trips and even tuition credit! For more details, contact Michelle Chambless, our Volunteer Scrip Coordinator at 619-831-2591,
michellerchambless@gmail.com.

Last month on September 19th we celebrated 100 years of Waldorf Education. Check out the newest Waldorf 100 film featuring reflections from Waldorf alums and Waldorf parents!

Back in April our students created postcards to be sent all over the world to different Waldorf Schools. In September we will be displaying the postcards we received from other schools in our main hallway at the Altadena campus, with the display making it's way to our Colina campus at a later date.
