Letter to the Editor: Taxation Without Representation

By Pattie Booker

The Radnor School Board is currently comprised of 5 Democrats and 4 Republicans. The four seats held by the Republicans are up for election on November 5th. In 2015 these four Republicans, including myself, Chuck Madden, Mike Miller and Julia Bohnenberger, were elected on a wave of support from three of Radnor’s unions including the Teachers, Para-professionals, and Transportation.

This vote of confidence was provided in large part due to our willingness to challenge the status quo and address issues that were ignored for several years.

While most would agree that School Board should not be a political position, there is no doubt many of the decisions are driven by the perspectives that align with a board member’s core values, and those values often are aligned with political affiliation.

Decisions made by the school board have lasting impact, first and foremost on each student’s education and development, and certainly on our property values.

There have been many decisions made by this board that were informed by having a diverse, and at times, very robust discussions and challenges by the differing viewpoints on the board. Radnor deserves a well-rounded school board that represents the whole of the community.

Chuck Madden and Mike Miller are seeking re-election and have demonstrated strength in representing the community’s interest. After 12 years on the board, I will be stepping down because my work responsibilities involve a great deal of travel and I cannot commit to serve to a level I believe the community deserves. As a result, there are three new names in this race.

Laura Foran who has worked in Radnor Middle School for 18 years in our student services office and served as president of the educational support professionals association for the last 7 years. Laura understands Radnor kids and our schools’ inner workings and she is willing to step down from her job if elected.

Radnor Class of 2005 alumni and IT professional, Ben Sydnes, is running along with Matt Mabe to represent the young families who moved to Radnor primarily for the quality of our schools.

Both Ben and Matt bring professional experience, and a perspective of being both a consumer of the district’s services and as homeowners invested in our community. I encourage Radnor voters to consider the need for balance on the school board, and the benefits of having diverse representation.

Kat Copeland Shines in Delaware County District Attorney Candidates' Debate

On October 27, 2019, current Delaware County District Attorney Kat Copeland, a Republican, squared off against her liberal, George Soros-funded Democratic opponent in a debate at Cabrini University. The video of the debate is available here , or click on the image to the right. An article about the debate is available here .

Kat Copeland is by far the more qualified and rational candidate. Don't let George Soros buy this election in Delaware County. Please vote for her on November 5.

"It's disturbing that billionaire George Soros is coming into Delaware County and trying to buy the District Attorney's Office here like he did in Philadelphia with Krasner," said Pete Peterson, a spokesperson for Copeland's campaign.

Letter: A Bridge Too Far for Delco!

[Elaine Paul Schaefer is one of the Democratic candidates running for Delaware County Council.]

We are a group of diverse woman who consider ourselves fairly informed voters. We are deeply troubled with the voting record of Elaine Paul Schaefer. Make sure your vote counts on November 5, 2019.

Elaine Paul Schaefer served on the Radnor Board of Commissioners for 8 years. Some years in leadership positions.

During this time, she raised taxes 17%. She voted to enact new mandatory “FEES” which resulted in unspent millions of taxpayer dollars being hi-jacked during her years as Radnor Commissioner. She voted on projects which were owned by entities who do business with her husband’s company. Those votes all pale in comparison when it came to defending TWO fellow Commissioners who now have both been convicted of SEX CRIMES.

For us and our community, the most disturbing votes Elaine Paul Schaefer took were to vote in support of Bill Spingler and Phil Ahr, both convicted of depraved SEX CRIMES. These votes show an enormous disconnect to the Delaware County community.

Radnor Township now has the unfortunate distinction that TWO of our Presidents of the BOC are convicted Sex Offenders. Elaine Paul Schaefer supported each of these Commissioners after they either admitted their crimes or were convicted. Disturbingly, Elaine Paul Schaefer voted AGAINST resolutions and/or motions which called on her to take action against both Bill Spingler and Philip Ahr.

Resolution 2017-82, June 26, 2017; Rescinding a Radnor Township award for service for Bill Spingler post-conviction of indecent sexual assault on his ex-mother in law. Elaine voted against that Resolution because she thought it was “mean spirited.”

Three months later, a motion to remove Phil Ahr as President of the Radnor BOC was made AFTER his own admission that he possessed this vile material and after receiving information from the Radnor Chief of Police on the issue. Thank God our township manager chose a different path and immediately distanced himself from this horrible predator. Elaine Paul Schaefer did not. She actively chose, by vote (10/09/17), to support this depraved human being and placed petty politics over her responsibility to Radnor residents. She attempted to hide her support under the guise of “rumor and innuendo”.

She claims to be a seasoned attorney and knows full well when the Office of Sex Crimes issues a warrant on these types of crimes, they don’t make mistakes. She was told by Chief Colarulo that “there was NO mistake”. She remained loyal to Mr. Ahr and allowed him to continue to hold onto his title and a township owned IPAD, on which he committed and may have continued to commit more of these crimes.
Elaine Paul Schaefer represents many things we do not agree with. Her judgement is inexcusable.

Elaine Paul Schafer crossed a bridge too far when she took successive votes to be supportive of sex crimes predators. A vote for Elaine is a vote for a supporter of sexual predators. Votes count, makes yours count.

He believes it is important to listen carefully and work collaboratively with others to find progressive solutions to the matters confronting our community.

Steve Gerber for Court of Common Pleas Judge

Among the candidates for Court of Common Pleas, Steve is eminently qualified to serve as a Judge . Steve has spent 27 years as a litigator handling property damage matters for property insurers and property owners. Steve’s extensive experience in litigation and alternative dispute resolution (including mediation and arbitration), combined with his public service, including serving on the Radnor School Board , give him the practical background, experience and compassion to serve as a judge presiding over controversies and facilitating resolutions to those controversies, pursuant to existing law, with integrity and impartiality.
