November 2019
Dear friends,

Manchester was fortunate to be visited last week by a group of eight Tibetan monks, who are on a Sacred Arts Tour, sharing their message of compassion and loving kindness. As many of you know - literally hundreds of people passed through the First Congregational Church where they were ensconced - they created a sand mandala, an ancient art form of Tibetan Buddhism. The sand mandala is constructed as a vehicle to generate compassion, to realize the impermanence of reality, and whenever a need for healing of the environment and living beings is felt. The monks consider our present age to be one of great need in this respect.

I dare say everyone who was in the presence of these spiritual teachers felt blessed not only by their message of kindness and compassion and their beautiful art, but also by their place in the community, working together toward World Peace. Our minds and hearts were touched by their ancient Tibetan culture. Timothy Egan, a National Book Award winner and occasional New York Times columnist, in his recent book A Pilgrimage to Eternity , speaks of the “malnutrition of the soul” as a plague of modern life. These eight monks inspired us to be generous and kind and united, and perhaps reminded us how to nourish each other and create change, one grain of sand at a time. A wonderful gift on our physical and spiritual journey.

Best,
Barbara Morrow

Featured Book of the Month

In the nearly ninety years since Irma S. Rombauer self-published the first three thousand copies of  Joy of Cooking  in 1931, it has become the kitchen bible, with more than 20 million copies in print. This new edition of  Joy  has been thoroughly revised and expanded by Irma’s great-grandson John Becker and his wife, Megan Scott.

John and Megan developed more than six hundred new recipes for this edition, tested and tweaked thousands of classic recipes, and updated every section of every chapter to reflect the latest ingredients and techniques available to today’s home cooks. Their strategy for revising this edition was the same one Irma and Marion employed: Vet, research, and improve  Joy ’s coverage of legacy recipes while introducing new dishes, modern cooking techniques, and comprehensive information on ingredients now available at farmers’ markets and grocery stores.

A new chapter on streamlined cooking explains how to economize time, money, and ingredients and avoid waste. You will learn how to use a diverse array of ingredients, from amaranth to za’atar. New techniques include low-temperature and sous vide cooking, fermentation, and cooking with both traditional and electric pressure cookers. Barbecuing, smoking, and other outdoor cooking methods are covered in even greater detail.

This new edition of  Joy  is the perfect combination of classic recipes, new dishes, and indispensable reference information for today’s home cooks. Whether it is the only cookbook on your shelf or one of many,  Joy  is and has been the essential and trusted guide for home cooks for almost a century. This new edition continues that legacy.

From “America’s preeminent spy novelist” ( The   New York Times ) comes a fast-paced, mesmerizing thriller of the French resistance fighters working secretly and bravely to defeat Hitler.

Occupied Paris, 1942. Just before he dies, a man being chased by the Gestapo hands off a strange-looking document to the unsuspecting novelist Paul Ricard. It looks like a blueprint of a part for a military weapon, one that might have important information for the Allied forces. Ricard realizes he must try to get it into the hands of members of the resistance network.

As Ricard finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into anti-Nazi efforts, and into increasingly dangerous espionage assignments, he travels to Germany and along the escape routes of underground resistance safe houses, to spy on Nazi maneuvers. When he meets the mysterious and beautiful Leila, a professional spy, they begin to work together to get crucial information out of France and into the hands of the Allied forces in London.
