Garmin Unveils Autoland System
|
Earlier this morning, Garmin introduced its Autoland system, an autonomous flight technology that is designed to land an aircraft when the pilot is incapacitated. Garmin Autoland is a first for the general aviation industry, and
Avionics News will have an in-depth report on this new technology in its December edition.
According to Garmin, Autoland will control and land the aircraft in an emergency situation without human intervention. The Autoland system determines the most optimal airport and runway, taking into account factors such as weather, terrain, obstacles and aircraft performance statistics. The new technology will be made available on select general aviation aircraft with the Garmin G3000 integrated flight deck in the near future.

Wearable Magic: Universal Avionics' i-FMS
|
Minimizing the need to divert attention from the cockpit task at hand is one reason co-pilots exist. It's also a driving force behind cockpit automation, regardless of how many pilots are available. But the current in-cockpit human-machine interface still requires attention to be diverted, if only to monitor the automation – or push the “suspend” button. If only there were some way to further leverage the automation to minimize the cockpit distractions involved in managing it.
That's one of the ideas behind Universal Avionics Systems Corp.'s ClearVision Interactive-FMS (i-FMS), software designed to enhance the HMI between pilots and their avionics by, among other things, leveraging the latest developments in head-up displays and head-wearable displays.

Urban Air Mobility: How Do We Get There From Here?

Coming soon to a city near you: Electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft may be operating in an urban air mobility model to fly passengers from point to point within crowded cities, cutting ground traffic significantly. With technology spooling up, how do we evolve operationally to be ready to launch when the technology reaches maturity? AEA Scholarship Applications Now Online
|
The Aircraft Electronics Association will award more than 20 scholarships totaling more than $100,000 for the 2020-21 school year to students pursuing a career in avionics or aircraft maintenance, as well as students from AEA member companies.
Since its inception, the AEA scholarship program has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships. Numerous awards are available, ranging from $1,000 to more than $35,000 each. Scholarship applications are available online, and the deadline to submit an application is April 1, 2020.

AEA to Distribute ASTM Standard F3361 to Attendees at Connect Conference in Daytona Beach
|
Upon publication of ASTM standard F3361, Classifying Alterations for In-Service Aircraft Under FAA Authority Oversight, the AEA recently petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration to recognize it as an acceptable means of compliance for the evaluation of alterations while making a determination of major or minor. As an FAA-recognized acceptable means of compliance, this document is essentially the same as if it was published as an advisory circular. The AEA will be conducting training on this new ASTM standard at each of the AEA Connect Conferences in the United States. In addition, AEA repair station members attending the AEA Connect Conferences will receive a copy of this ASTM standard. The next Connect Conference takes place Nov. 4-5 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Avidyne Teaches Legacy Cockpits New Tricks
|
In all things, progress’s inescapable traveling partner is the chronological depreciation of capabilities. Just look at the avionics in legacy Part 25 business jets. When they rolled off the production line, their cockpits were filled with, what was at the time, the latest and greatest technology available. These systems are now a generation or two behind today’s latest and greatest technologies. Avionics upgrades are, of course, available, but for many legacy installations, their cost often doesn’t fare well in the return on investment equation.
Acknowledging that these jets start getting old after 10 years, Avidyne identified a new market. Today, said CEO Dan Schwinn, “a 15-year-old jet will not have an integrated avionics system because they did not exist” when those airplanes made their way down the production line. This lack of integration opens the door to economically updating their capabilities.

This weeklong course provides an interactive environment to learn, understand and implement the regulations that govern repair station design and operations. Current quality managers, technicians, mechanics, and repairmen who are involved in the management of a repair station as well as individuals looking to establish a 14 CFR Part 145 repair station should attend. This course is designed for entry-level avionics technicians or those looking for basic training on pitot-static and aircraft transponder systems. This two-day course takes place at the Kent Career Tech Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and covers the history and theory of operation of pitot-static instruments and transponders, as well as system setup, hands-on testing, and the troubleshooting skills necessary to perform FAR 91.411 and 91.413 checks. Equipment from DFW Instruments and Laversab will be used in the course.

Attendees will be introduced to the regulations, documentation, test equipment and maintenance practices associated with performing RVSM maintenance for aircraft. This course also is designed to provide maintenance personnel with the knowledge and skills required to operate the IFR6000 to verify and maintain transponder, UAT, TCAS and DME systems.

Avidyne introduced its new dzus-mounted Avidyne Atlas multifunction flight management system for turbine-class aircraft and helicopters. The Avidyne Atlas includes a satellite-based augmentation system GPS navigator with required navigation performance and area navigation capability, including LPV, LNAV/VNAV, LNAV-only, and approach procedures with vertical approach modes.
Gogo Business Aviation's AVANCE systems – AVANCE L5 and AVANCE L3 – have now flown more than 175,000 flights totaling more than 108 million miles. The 175,000 flights is a milestone that took just two years to reach following the initial launch of AVANCE L5 in late-2017. In addition, Gogo announced three strategic partners that will play key roles in Gogo’s development of its 5G system and network. Embraer received an STC for the Gogo AVANCE L5.
Garmin announced certification of the G1000 NXi integrated flight deck upgrade for the King Air C90.
Universal Avionics announced an incentive package for operators seeking to equip for Data Comm using the company’s UniLink Communications Management Unit as the cornerstone of their data link flight deck upgrade. In addition, Universal Avionics unveiled its Fly By Sight Navigation System, which combines ClearVision SkyLens Head Wearable Display and the company’s recently unveiled Interactive FMS.
Collins Aerospace Systems debuted its first-to-market 4K video offering on Bombardier’s new Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft cabin. The company also is redefining flight operations for business aviation with the industry’s first digital Oceanic Plotting Chart for pilots, available on the company’s ARINCDirect iPad app that eliminates paper plotting charts and manual processes being used today for navigating oceanic airspace.
Satcom Direct released SD PostFlight. The industry-first, web-based software, automatically populates the aircraft flight log with all available data relating to flight times and cycle events for each leg of a journey. The second edition of aeroIT, SD’s aviation IT certification, is now available with renewed content and an exam updated to reflect the changes; SD’s training programs have been added to the curricula offered at both FlightSafety International and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; and the number of SD digital self-learning courses has grown.
Sandel Avionics Inc. announced that the company’s board of directors has appointed Steve Jackson as president and CEO. Jackson replaces founder Gerry Block, who announced his retirement in September 2019.
Pro Star Aviation amended STC ST00158BO for single or dual Universal WAAS-equipped FMS on Honeywell Primus 1000-equipped Citation series aircraft. It’s one of the first dealer approvals with SCN 1002.1 that allows for compliance with NextGen enhancements such as CPDLC, FANS, and ADS-B.

Duncan Aviation has invested in the necessary equipment, tooling, and training to bring Honeywell HTF7000 Series engine turbine blade changes and balancing capabilities in-house. Also, Duncan Aviation’s Engineering & Certifications Services Department received validation from the Directorate General for Civil Aviation in Mexico for more than a dozen of Duncan Aviation’s STCs. Duncan Aviation’s ECS has made all of the STCs available for sale for work on aircraft registered in Mexico. In addition, Duncan Aviation's FBO facilities in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, Michigan, received Stage I accreditation from the International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling.
L3 Harris Technologies announced that the U.S. Army has ordered electro-optical sensor suites from the company to provide high-precision situational awareness for its unmanned air systems.
True Blue Power’s equipment, including two DC-to-DC voltage converters, six DC-to-AC inverters and two intelligent batteries, powers Textron Aviation’s recently-certified Cessna Citation Longitude. In addition, True Blue Power announced the TSO certification of the company’s entire Gen5 main-ship battery family. The TB20 (20 amp-hour), TB30 (30 amp-hour) and TB40 (40 amp-hour) received a C179b CLASS A-4B rating, meeting the FAA's latest and highest level of lithium battery requirements.
PIC Wire & Cable announced the launch of new 10G Ethernet connectors product line MACHFORCE, a MACHFORCE is a D38999 style high-speed 10G data connector designed for rugged aerospace and defense applications. Its patented design offers the market's highest density 10G Ethernet connector with several key features:
Thommen Aircraft Equipment Ltd. announced that Aviation Industry Corporation of China Xi’an Aircraft Company selected the Stratomer next-generation digital aircraft clock for its MA700 twin-engine medium-range turboprop airliner.
Honeywell is now enabling business jet operators to access the Iridium Certus network. Also, Honeywell’s Sky Connect services will now be accessible to more operators, greatly increasing safety and situational awareness, enhancing communication between operators and reducing the need for costly satcom telephone calls. Honeywell also unveiled the micro power unit, a smaller and less-expensive version of Honeywell’s auxiliary power unit, available for a wide range of turboprop and small to midsize jet engine aircraft. And the new Honeywell IntuVue RDR-7000 Weather Radar System is the latest and most advanced addition to the IntuVue family, helping pilots avoid bad weather for a safer and more enjoyable flight.
Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has delivered more than 25 Gulfstream G500 aircraft to customers just over a year after the aircraft entered service. In addition, Gulfstream introduced its new flagship, the Gulfstream G700. Also, Gulfstream dedicated a hangar, operations center and team of technicians specifically for midcabin aircraft at its MRO facility at St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia, Illinois. Gulfstream's announced the all-new Gulfstream G500 received its EASA certification.
EIT Avionics announced issuance of STC No. SR04411NY, Installation of EIT Avionics Flight Operational Data Recorder for the Robinson R 44 II.
Constant Aviation was appointed an authorized service center for the Rolls-Royce BR710 engine. The BR710 authorization enables Constant Aviation to provide CorporateCare and warranty service on BR710 engines installed on Bombardier Global Express, Gulfstream GV and G550 aircraft.

FlightSafety International will build a new Learning Center in Houston, Texas. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020.
uAvionix and Garmin announced resolution of the ongoing patent lawsuit against uAvionix regarding ADS-B technology used within uAvionix’s skyBeacon, tailBeacon, and echoUAT products. Under the terms of the confidential agreement, uAvionix will be able to continue offering and supporting these products in the market.
West Star Aviation promoted Eric Valdes to Gulfstream program director with associated programs for Egyptian contracts, Accessories, NDT and window repair at the East Alton, Illinois, facility. Brian Jansen was named the new Falcon program manager at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility.
FreeFlight Systems announced that the company’s RA-4500 is now available with advanced, digital-to-analog converter capabilities, making the system the optimal replacement for legacy altimeters like the KRA-405/405B. FreeFlight Systems also announced that its RANGR ADS-B receiver is now available as a dual-band solution, incorporating both 978 MHz and 1090 MHz receive capabilities in a single-box solution.
Latitude Technologies' flagship DL 150 Satellite Data Unit was selected to complete Universal Avionics' NextGen Pro•Link solution designed to support the CPDLC and ADS-C mandates. Latitude Technologies today also announced, with engineering partner Heron Aero Solutions LLC and distribution partner DAC International, an FAA STC project for the installation of its DL150-00 Satellite Data Unit and S200-012 Safety Services SATVOICE line replaceable units. In addition, Latitude Technologies and SKYTRAC Systems were selected to provide the FANS 1/A SATCOM hardware to Textron Aviation in Wichita, Kansas.
CCX Technologies announced that its SystemX Cybersecurity Platform is approved for the SmartSky Networks Skytelligence digital services framework.
StandardAero Business Aviation has launched a new MRO Project Management service app called myStandardAero. The new app is currently available from the Apple App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android devices. Also, StandardAero will open the company’s first European-based business aviation parts warehouse to support operators and strengthen the company’s parts support in the EMEA region. Thales and StandardAero announced the first airframe that will be certified for TopMax, Thales’ new Wearable Head-Up Display. The Bombardier Challenger 350 series of aircraft may expect to receive FAA certification for the retrofit upgrade by the end of 2020, with EASA certification to follow. Cape Air selected StandardAero to provide engine support services for its fleet of Cessna Caravan aircraft.

Mid-Canada Mod Center's acquisition of Canadian aviation engineering firm Avionics Design Services Ltd. is now complete.
Flying Colours Corp. completed a retrofit of the Honeywell Primus Elite flight deck for a Bombardier Global Express, along with installation of the Honeywell JetWave Ka-band system in an unusual two-phase project. The dual avionics upgrade successfully modernized the privately-owned Bombardier Global Express to enhance the crew’s situational awareness and add high-speed broadband, enabling powerful in-flight connectivity capabilities for passengers.
airplus Maintenance hosted the first joint cluster meeting of Bodensee AIRea and Swiss Aerospace Cluster. More than 40 participants from different aerospace companies from Switzerland and the Lake of Constance area attended the first joint cluster meeting at Friedrichshafen airport.
Astronautics Corporation of America’s air-ground communications system now enables both cabin and flight deck connectivity within one system backed by qualified hardware ensuring secure domain separation between avionics data and cabin connections. The company also announced its AFI4700 RoadRunner Electronic Flight Instrument has received FAA TSO authorization and STC for the Leonardo A109/119 helicopters, along with STC bilateral agreements with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and Brazil’s Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil.
Fargo Jet Center Flight School was awarded a spot in the 2019 Flight Training Experience Awards as a Distinguished Flight School, a title given to high scoring flight schools from AOPA’s annual Flight Training Experience Survey.
Barfield Inc. signed an agreement allowing Falgayras to become a Barfield authorized repair center in Europe. The agreement covers the repair and calibration of several GSTE products including Air Data/Pitot-Static and Turbine Temperature.
Safe Flight Instrument Corporation of White Plains, New York, was chosen by Textron Aviation to provide its Stall Warning/Angle of Attack System on the Cessna SkyCourier.
