A NOTE FROM THE NURSE

We need to eat food every day. So, it is very important that we make healthy choices most of the time. I like using the concept of “everyday” food vs. “sometimes” food. This model can help all of us maintain a healthier diet instead of making some of our favorites totally off limits. If the majority of our food choices are good for us then an occasional sugary/fatty treat won’t be so bad.

I will also be making surprise visits to classrooms in the morning to look for healthy snacks. Fatty chips, chewy fruit snacks, and sugary cookies are not appropriate for morning snack. Please help your child pack a healthy snack. Some examples of everyday foods are: fresh fruit, cut up veggies, piece of cheese, yogurt, whole grain crackers, low sugar cereal, or plain popcorn.
Children that eat healthy, get physical activity, and sleep well do better at school. Less time watching TV and playing video games is better for everyone. Call me at school anytime if you have any questions about your child’s diet, etc.

WHAT'S FOR LUNCH?
The Middletown Prevention Coalition is coordinating an underage drinking media campaign entitled, "Talk They Hear You". This week's initiative focuses on St. Patrick's Day and targets our Middletown parents with messages of celebrating St. Patrick's Day by drinking responsibly and talking to their kids about the health consequences of underage drinking.
