Hidden Treasure
Dear Anchored Sisters,

Pastor Joel's sermon on prayer this week reminded me of this story I wrote years ago.  The hidden treasure I found that day is precious to me and I have profited greatly from it!

Remember, dear sisters, your prayers avail much for your family, your church, your community and your country.  A verse that encourages me when I feel like my prayers do not seem to be accomplishing much is this one in Galatians 6:9, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up!  Don't give up!  Keep praying, my friend.  God hears the cries of your heart.

On a recent visit with my parents in Florida, the thought of wearing a bathing suit compelled me to do abdominal exercises on the floor in their living room. Resting briefly from my struggles, I lay flat on my back, struggling to get my breath. While gazing at the underside of a nearby antique table, I realized that there were parts of the table that seemed odd. As I examined the table more thoroughly, I discovered two concealed drawers. Excitement coursed through my veins! Long ago I had stopped knocking on walls to find a hidden safe or door, but, like my childhood heroine, Nancy Drew, I was sure I had made an important discovery. My parents had never mentioned these drawers. I knew they would share my excitement!

When I showed the drawers to my mom, she informed me that when the table was refinished a few years ago, she had asked that hidden drawers be installed. Somewhat deflated, I asked if I could see what was in the drawers. Mom said it would be good to check, since she couldn't remember what was in them. My hopes surged again as I thought I might find some treasure she had misplaced. There had been several times over the years when mom had forgotten where she had hidden a special piece of jewelry. Perhaps I would find one of these for her!

In the first drawer, I only found a couple of empty boxes. No hidden treasure there! As I pulled out the second drawer, I saw page after page of my mother's flowing, cursive writing. Curious, I glanced at the contents. Tears filled my eyes as I read Scripture verses and blessings carefully written out for each of mom's children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. Mother's precious love was so evident in the petitions and prayers that covered the pages.

Gently, I replaced the papers and closed the secret drawer. Then, I continued my exercises-on my knees, thanking God for the great treasure I had found.
