“He Justifies Us”
Every day we try to be as “righteous” as we can in all areas of our lives. But how do you feel when, every day, you fail to be righteous and you sin? “Guilty”! As we begin our Lenten series, “Savior”, we hear from St. Paul that we are ungodly sinners, enemies of God, deserving of His wrath. He is the One that declares us “guilty!” in our sin. But because of the blood of Jesus, shed on the cross, God declares us “not guilty!” Because Jesus takes our place on the cross, we are “justified”, declared righteous in the sight of God, because of the death of Jesus. Overwhelmed with guilt over your sinfulness? Jesus is your Savior, who makes you innocent through His shed blood.
Preacher: Senior Pastor Ben Roberts

Old Testament Reading: Micah 6:1–8
Epistle: Romans 5:1–9
Holy Gospel: : Luke 18:9–14
Lenten Sermon Series:
Savior: What Jesus Does For Us At The Cross
When Jesus was crucified on the cross, He was there for one reason: to save us from our sin. The crown of thorns that encircled His brow signaled to all of creation who Jesus was: our Savior. Even St. Paul writes, “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18) But this “word of the cross” that comes to us in God’s Word speaks of this salvation of sinners in many different ways. Each particular way describes our sinful condition in a particular way, and how the death of Jesus on the cross proclaims the good news of salvation in a particular way. In our Lenten series, “Savior”, we will be looking at the many ways God’s Word describes what Jesus does for us and our salvation at the cross. In so doing, we will experience the depths of how much Jesus does for us on the cross, as well as discover how His salvation touches every area of our lives.
Our Nursery Room is available to serve families with young children during our worship services each weekend. The Nursery is the first room on the school hallway adjoining the sanctuary. Ask one of the ushers to guide you.
If you have questions about our Nursery, please call the Church Office at 708.354.1690, or contact Dalyne Shinneman at 630.772.1688 or email dalyne.shinneman@gmail.com .

NEW 6 WEEK BIBLE STUDY STARTING THIS SUNDAY!
St. Peter tells us: "Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you..." (1 Peter 3:15, ESV) Would you be able to "make a defense" if someone asked you any of the following questions:

Why does God allow suffering in the world?
How could a loving God send people to Hell?
Why isn’t Christianity more inclusive?
How can one religion be “right” and the others “wrong”?
Why have so many wars been fought in the name of God?
These are just a few of the questions and doubts even ardent believers wrestle with today. In our Bible Study, The Reason for God, we will address each doubt and discover explanations for each reason. Through videos and discussion, we will discover how faith in a Christian God is a soundly rational belief, held by thoughtful people of intellectual integrity with a deep compassion for those who truly want to know the truth.

Week 1: Isn’t the Bible a Myth?
Hasn’t Science Disproved Christianity?
Week 2: How Can You Say There Is Only One Way to God?
What About Other Religions?
Week 3: What Gives You the Right to Tell Me How to Live My Life?
Why Are There So Many Rules?
Week 4: Why Does God Allow Suffering?
Why Is There So Much Evil in the World?
Week 5: Why Is the Church Responsible for So Much Injustice?
Why Are Christians Such Hypocrites?
Week 6: How Can God Be Full of Love and Wrath at the Same Time?
How Can God Send Good People to Hell?

JESUS HELPS A SICK FRIEND!
When Jesus heard that his friend Lazarus was sick, he traveled to the village of Bethany where Lazarus lived with his sisters, Mary and Martha. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had died, and the sisters had placed their brother's body in a tomb. "If only you had been here," Martha sobbed, "my brother wouldn't have died." Jesus comforted the sisters and then surprised everyone with these amazing words: "My friend Lazarus sleeps, but I will wake him up," What did this mean? How could Jesus "wake him up"? We'll find out what happens in our Bible story!
Lesson materials will be sent to all Sunday School and Wednesday Bible School families. If you do not receive your package, contact Dalyne Shinneman at dalyne.shinneman@gmail.com or call 630.772.1688.

Lenten Midweek Sermon Series
In View of God's Mercy

Lent is a season when we take a look at our lives in view of God’s mercy toward us in the sacrifice of his Son for us on the cross. We, in turn, are called by God, specially during this time of repentance and reflection, to be living sacrifices for him, displaying our devotion to him in word and deed. Jesus helps us to see the richness of God’s mercy in his life, death and resurrection.
The services in our Midweek Lenten series for Lent focus our eyes of faith on the meaning behind God’s mercy made manifest in Christ.
Lenten Devotional
Our 2022 Lenten Devotional is HERE! For the last 35+ years, the members of St. John’s have written wonderful, thoughtful devotions that enrich our daily lives throughout Lent. Our theme this year is, “Tell Everyone What He Has Done”. In these devotions, we will focus on the “wonderful deeds” God does throughout the pages of Scripture, and how they point to all the “wonderful deeds” that God does for us and all people in Jesus. These devotions are a great opportunity to “thank the Lord and sing His praise”...indeed, to “tell everyone what He has done”! If you have questions regarding the devotional booklet you may address them to nancy.mayor@gmail.com.

 ~ LENTEN SMALL GROUP STUDY~
St. John’s invites everyone to participate in a Lenten Small Group Study, “24 Hours That Changed the World.”, a description of the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life by pastor and author Adam Hamilton.  An inspiring sermon series by Pastor Hamilton so blessed his Kansas community that it has been published, now including books, devotionals, leader guides, and a DVD. Study guides designed specifically for adults, youth, and children are available, so the material can be used for small groups of any age, for family devotions, or for personal study. The material is divided into seven self-contained chapters, so the study schedule can be very flexible and tailored for each group (weekly use of all seven chapters would ideally begin during the first week of March).

If you would like to participate in any of these formats during Lent, please register on this SignUpGenius link:

including your preference of in-person or Zoom study. The Board of Parish Ed and Family Life will contact you to determine the materials you will need and connect you to a study group. If you are willing to lead a group, please indicate this in the comment field in your sign-up. Also consider inviting friends and neighbors to join your Lenten Small Group.

We are looking forward to enriching our Lenten worship and study together through “24 Hours That Changed the World”!
