Father James Peterson's Weekly Newsletter - May 21, 2020
Greetings!
Salutations to you! How are you doing today? I really and truly hope that you are well. We’re coming to the close of this month of May and many of you are aware that it is a month set aside for devotional appreciation for Our Blessed Mother Mary. One of her more interesting titles that I’ve come across is Our Lady of the Skies. A few years ago I was flying out of the JFK Airport in New York City and came across a Catholic chapel dedicated to Mary.
There is a unique depiction of her within the chapel standing on a propeller from a plane. In doing a bit of research online the long story short about her and the chapel is that a World War II veteran named Bob O’Brien had a miraculous experience wherein his life was spared through the intercession of Our Lady. As a response from a grateful heart he generously helped to coordinate efforts to have a chapel built at the airport. For more information about the chapel’s fascinating history please feel free to read about it here: jfkchapel.org
Some of the inspiration for today’s article came from reading about the world famous and inspiring pilot Amelia Mary Earhart. It was on this date back in 1932 that she became the first woman to complete a solo transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Northern Ireland (britannica.com/biography/Amelia-Earhart). While she mysteriously disappeared in 1937 when attempting a nonstop flight around the world her legacy continues through stories, movies, television programs, and investigative reports. We entrust her soul to our Heavenly Father (and her copilot Fred Noonan) and all those who have passed on from this life through the prayerful concern of Our Blessed Mother Mary. May we one day join them to praise the Lord of Heaven and Earth forever and ever. Amen.
Christ be Our Light,
Fr. James
