UUCG NEWS
For October 2020

Embracing a free and responsible search for truth and meaning while demonstrating our strong belief in the interdependent web of all existence.
Are We Old Yet?

October is my birth month. I’ll be 70 on the 9th. I always considered 70 to be old. Senior Citizen status and the accompanying discounts may have come earlier – but you weren’t really “old” till you reached 70. I guess I reached this conclusion because when I was growing up, folks would quote the Psalms as saying that’s how many years we were given, and all years lived past 70 were “on borrowed time.” Times have changed though. If we have decent health, we live longer. Although worldwide, the average is still about 70, a woman in the US can expect to live to be 81. So, I won’t consider myself “on borrowed time” yet, but I think I might as well own the moniker of “old.” After all, old things are precious. If we have old possessions that are in good shape, they are very valuable. So be it. Actually, I consider myself to be in excellent company. Many of our members are “old” as well, and they are some of the most valuable, productive members we have! So, let us honor and celebrate our aging status!

Now, I have a favor to ask of you for my birthday. I don’t need a present. I don’t need a card. All I want for my birthday is for you to get your pledge information in! I am so thankful that our members and friends have been so faithful in their continued giving through this pandemic. That has allowed us to continue paying our bills, continue paying our hard-working staff, and even make some improvements. Although we are not sure what our year will look like in 2021, we need for you to continue your faithful giving, and if you are able, perhaps share a little more, since others in our congregation may have more difficult situations. Times have been tough, but tomorrow is coming. Let’s get ready for it!!

Peace, Love, and Courage!
Jane

October 4
Theme for 20-21, "Exploring Water: Essential Source | Essential Symbol"
Beth Sutton, Worship Leader
We will explore water’s most basic purpose of sustaining life through the Interdependent web of all existence. Beth will give a short talk followed by a short TED talk. “Kelsey Leonard: How Did We Lose Our Connection To Water?” Kelsey Leonard was taught we are born with a deep connection to water and a duty to protect it. But today, she says, most of us have lost that connection – and the world is suffering because of it.
ANTHEM: Do You Hear the People Sing? (Les Miserables)

October 11
"Being a Good Ally – Gender and Sexuality"
Rev. Jane Page, Worship Leader
Rev. Jane continues her series on “Being a Good Ally” with a message focusing on Gender and Sexuality. We will explore how our UUA and our Welcoming Congregations support the LGBTQ communities as well as possibilities for the future. This service will help us in our Welcoming Congregation Renewal certification this year. We encourage folks to wear one of the colors of the rainbow to our Zoom Service for a spectacular gallery view!

"Jesus, UU, and You"
Rev. Jane Page, Worship Leader
Does our Welcoming Congregation include room for Jesus? Rev. Jane shares with UUCG an inspirational message about our Christian heritage and the need for inclusive messaging regarding Christianity in our congregations
and in our association.

"Being a Good Ally – Differing Abilities"
Rev. Jane Page, Worship Leader
Rev. Jane continues her series on “Being a Good Ally” with a focus on differing abilities. We all bring varying physical, mental, social and emotional skills and abilities in our congregations. How can we be more welcoming of this diversity here and work advocate in our communities for those with differing abilities?
This service will also include a virtual “Trick or Treat for UNICEF.”
ANTHEM: You'll Never Walk Alone
OCTOBER is
STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN Month at UUCG
It is disappointing that we cannot have our usual catered luncheon at church, our lively music by John, and all be together for this important event. It sometimes has been a little challenging having our services all on Zoom but a good many of our congregation have come together for the Zoom services. It means so much to gather together during this particular difficult time. The needs of the church are just as great even though we are not meeting at the building in person. Hopefully by 2021 we will be able to gather once again in person at our church home (and use our new sidewalk and parking lot.)

October is our annual Stewardship Campaign month
starting October 1st and ending October 25 for our 2021 fiscal year.
Your packet containing a colorful brochure along with your contribution form and an addressed envelope to mail in your pledge form should arrive during the first week of October. We have six Ring Leaders this year: Beth Stevenson, Kim Merck, Peggy Lee, Ann Leonard, June Sherwood, Diane Knight and one of them will be contacting members of their Ring to remind and thank you for getting in your pledge. We have six Rings (groups) in our congregation covering Brunswick, Darien, St Mary’s, Jekyll Island, and St Simons Island.

A few years ago, June Sherwood brought an idea to several UUCG women to form a Sisterhood group so we could discuss various topics (usually one per monthly meeting) and get to know each other better. A second group was formed late last year, and both groups are going strong and meeting our needs to connect with and learn from one another.

If you are interested in forming any of the groups mentioned, please let me know. June and I would be happy to help you get started.

ADULT RE WORKSHOP: Humor, Hindsight and Hope: Me an Elder?

This RE opportunity is a six-week workshop, meeting on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m., beginning October 14, 2020 on Zoom. Facilitated by UUCG member, Carolyn Wallace, this workshop will use brief readings, reflective writing and discussion to explore possibilities for spiritual growth and meaning in the later years. It is part of the UUA’s Tapestry Curriculum for Adult RE. The following is a brief introduction to the workshop:
“This program helps people as they begin to redesign their later years into a time of reflection, discernment, soul stretching, and new life possibilities. This gift of extended years finds many people becoming elders with deep personal questions such as, who am I now, and what will I do that is meaningful?”

We have a core group of participants, but it is not too late the join the list.
To join, please contact Carolyn at carolynswallace@yahoo.com.
Green Tip of the Month
I can’t think of anything more important for October except this: VOTE!
There are way too many important issues related to our environment to list here, but there is a lot at stake in this election. Stay informed about where your favorite candidates stand on the issues. Here’s an example of a site where you can log on, and read about candidate positions on the environment. https://cleanenergy.org/georgia/
You can also check out websites of the party you choose and research information about the candidates.

Make a voting plan, and a back-up to your voting plan. Don’t sit this one out!

Happy Fall,
Sharon Ehle

You see men and women in our community carrying their life's belongings in shopping bags and back packs walking to get out of the elements or looking for a place to sleep. Doorways, under bridges, abandoned houses or cars become their homes, or for a lucky few the couch of a friend or relative.

The Well is a hospitality center for people who are homeless , providing resources such as a shower, laundry room, phone, internet access, and address for correspondence. By providing this venue, FaithWorks helps those who are homeless with opportunities to reconnect with family members, access important services to help them leave the streets, and recover from sickness and disease. Our guests often regain employment and restore hope in their lives.

Guests at The Well are always in need of towels and toiletries.

Our UUCG CARING FUND was established for the benefit of UUCG affiliated folks. The Fund is intended for members and friends of our congregation who are undergoing hard times, such as extensive medical bills, loss of home, etc. There are times throughout the year when we specify that a certain amount of our offerings will go to this fund.
