Help Catholic Charities provide available services to the needy in our Diocese.
Did you know that 1 out of 10 residents of the Diocese receives at least one service each year from Catholic Charities? The Bishop's 5K Run/Walk will bring attention and resources to assist Catholic Charities in its continuing efforts to reach out to underserved areas of the Diocese. This event is a great way to participate in the mission of Catholic Charities - providing caring service to the most vulnerable in our community.
Last year, Catholic Charities assisted more than 30,700 individuals in Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore with a variety of essential services including food, clothing, energy assistance, residential and behavioral health programs. Catholic Charities also runs the Bayard House which is the only licensed residential program in Delaware providing food, shelter, and direct care to at-risk, homeless, pregnant, and newly parenting teens and young women. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the needs of those served by Catholic Charities have risen exponentially.

Giving in 2020: CARES Act Offers Extra Tax Advantages
While much of the coronavirus relief has been focused on helping individuals and businesses, several lesser-known provisions aim to stimulate philanthropy through increased tax incentives around charitable giving for both individuals and corporations.
Take advantage of the provisions of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, & Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020 and maximize your year-end donations.
Deduct $300 in charitable giving, even if you don't itemize.
This year, taxpayers who don't itemize can deduct up to $300 ($600 for married couples filing jointly) in charitable giving "above the line," reducing your taxable income by that amount for tax year 2020. Most taxpayers don't itemize and, therefore, don't typically benefit from charitable deductions, which can lower your adjusted gross income (AGI), thereby reducing your tax base. The CARES Act changes that for 2020, allowing for moderate-income individuals to help nonprofits with critical needs.
Deduct more of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).
In 2020, taxpayers can deduct up to 100% of their AGI for charitable cash contributions (usually only 60% of maximum). If an individual or couple happens to donate more than 100% of their AGI, the standard five-year carryover still applies. If you are interested in making a major gift, doing so now will result in a significantly increased tax benefit.
Deduct more of your corporate taxable income.
Corporations can deduct up to 25% of taxable income for charitable contributions in tax year 2020 (usually only 10%).
You have until December 31, 2020 to make your contributions. Charitable giving is limited to cash contributions. If you are associated with a corporate giving program, 2020 is a great year to increase your charitable giving. And if you're able to increase your personal giving this year, you can make a meaningful difference in your community and also benefit from some tax savings.

Catholic Charities Bayard House
Care for Pregnant and Newly Parenting Young Women
Bayard House is the only licensed residential program in Delaware for pregnant and newly parenting adolescents and young women. The Bayard House program gives our clients the opportunity to deliver a healthy baby and create a loving, independent home for that child.
Bayard House serves up to 14 individuals at any given time in a home-like environment and offers clients secure housing, nutritious meals, emotional support during pregnancy, individualized case management services, access to pre-natal healthcare, birthing classes, and counseling.
From the client's first day in residence, she creates a service plan to meet her individual needs and achieve her goals related to parenting and self-sufficiency. She has the support of a caring staff of service specialists, case manager, and program manager that work with her to find success 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Bayard House also assists new families through the Catholic Charities Diaper Bank, providing six distributions of diapers each year to qualified families with children age 3 and under. Mena* came to the Bayard House in an effort to find support for herself and her 1 year-old son. She had a history of living from place to place, with no stable environment to call home. Originally from Philadelphia, she had little to no support from anyone in Delaware. With her move to Wilmington, Delaware, Mena found the Catholic Charities Bayard House and her life turned around for the better!
Mena learned how to access services and create a solid foundation for herself and her young child. With the help of Bayard House staff, she was able to complete a job development program. She enrolled her young son in daycare for the first time, received healthcare benefits from her new job, and began to focus on her health and wellness. This happened at a precious time because Mena is pregnant with her second child. With newfound support, patience, and perseverance, she will continue to provide for herself and her children with a stable and safe life, where they can all continue to thrive.

Income eligible Delawareans will soon be able to fill out and submit LIHEAP applications along with all the required documents for each person in the household. Once received, Catholic Charities will call you to schedule a telephone or curbside appointment. Please keep in mind, during the public health crisis, Catholic Charities offices have restricted access to the public.
