Register now for 23rd annual Corporate Challenge

Registration is now underway for our 23rd annual Corporate Challenge. Area businesses and organizations are invited to field teams of four to six members (co-ed) to compete in six different light athletic events, including dodge ball, soccer, a basketball shooting event and our regionally-famous briefcase relay.

It's a fun day of networking and team building, all while raising money for the Westchase District Community Fund (WDCF). Since its beginning, the Corporate Challenge has raised more than $280,000 for area charities, including Quillian Center's summer day camps. The money is distributed by the WDCF.

We keep our sponsor fees low so that any Westchase District business of any size can participate. You can register a team for $400, become an event host at the $200 or $400 level, or be an event sponsor for $950.

We're particularly grateful to our friends at Lockwood, Andrews and Newnam who have signed on our Title Sponsor for the second year in a row.

So far, 16 teams have already registered to participate. Our event usually sells out by the end of February, so nab your spot for the years' best friendly outdoor competition today.

'Tis the season for FRESH strawberries

Whether you like them in smoothies, on salads, in daiquiris or piled on top of shortcake, strawberries are not just delicious, they're good for you!

According to Medical News Today, strawberries offer health-boosting antioxidants, but they do not rapidly boost a person's blood sugar, making them an ideal food choice for those who have diabetes.

Plus, consuming strawberries can boost your body's defenses against a variety of diseases, including heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Our friends at PEAS Farm have been growing strawberries since the fall to bring them to market during Houston's winter season. Stop by early and pick up some before they sell out!

Charter Schools Offer Educational Alternatives

T he number of tuition-free public charter schools has grown in recent years as parents demand more accountability and flexibility from their local school districts.

Westchase District is now home to two charter schools and registration is underway for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Westchase COO to chair Chamber Board of Directors
Dave Gilkeson receives the ceremonial gavel from outgoing HWCOC board chair Sarah Cain.

Congratulations to our chief operating officer Dave Gilkeson who was recently elected chair of the Houston West Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Dave has been involved in the Chamber for more than 15 of its 35 years, having previously served as board secretary and member of the executive committee. He has also served for more than 10 years on the Chamber's Government Affairs Committee and the Salute to Veterans Committee.

Dave grew up in Pennsylvania, but (as they say) came to Texas as fast as he could. After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Hotel Administration from Cornell University, Dave moved to Houston to work for Marriott Hotels. He earned his MBA from University of Houston and has been part of the leadership team at Westchase District since 1999.

The Chamber will certainly benefit from his leadership skills and business acumen.
