Dear Members,
Despite all the cancellations around us, there are still plenty of opportunities to exhibit and visit exhibits both in person and virtually. Galleries and museums are allowed to be open now in NH with social distancing and other precautions.
Currently, WCA/NH has the exhibit "Narratives, a Women's Point of View" up at Vynnart Gallery in Meredith NH till August 25. You can visit it in person, or you can view it on our website.
We just posted the prospectus for our show "A Closer Look" that will be on exhibit at the Jaffrey Civic Center in Jaffrey, NH this October. Twiggs Gallery in Boscawen has the exhibit "Tree and Twig" till August 23. There are plenty of virtual exhibit opportunities as well. Library Arts Center in Newport, NH has a call for entries for their annual Juried Regional Exhibit. WCA Colorado has a call for entries titled "Old Myths New Stories" open to all WCA members. The Washington DC WCA chapter has "See My Color" A social justice call for art. More info about these exhibits are in this newsletter. What I like about opportunities is that they make me stop obsessing about the news, and get to work creating art. There's nothing like a call for art with an interesting topic or title that gets me working on a new idea. And if I don't get in, no worries, at least it sparked me to create something new. So take a look at these and see if they spark you to make something new. And if you hear of any interesting exhibit opportunities, email them to Paulette for the next newsletter! And post them on our WCA/NH Facebook group too. Enjoy the rest of the Summer,
Donna Catanzaro

More Ways We Help Each Other Succeed
The Protest Portraits art installation - will be on the Plymouth town common through mid-day on Sunday, August 9. I am trying to get final approval for it to go to the Statehouse in early September. In mid-September, it will go to Holderness School, and then PSU. Other schools and universities are also on the list, pending final approval.
* editor's note: This is a very dramatic must-see!
First Place in Juried National Exhibit - Two Protest Portraits were chosen for the national juried exhibit called "About What's Going On," at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, Hopkinton, MA. The exhibit includes work from 45 artists around the U.S. that speaks to the experience of the pandemic, the upsurge of consciousness of racism, our damaged economy, or our conflicted politics. My piece called Protest Portrait #1: Trysten, won first place.
Life's Work Solo Exhibit at Kimball-Jenkins School of Art - In the Carriage House from 9/1-9/28 The opening reception is indoors and outside on Thursday, September 10, from 5-7 with social distancing and other COVID prevention measures in place.

Flag / Banner by Cynthia Cutting
The Community of Caring Flags project is a visual representation of our interconnection and commitment to caring for and protecting our community
Why and How the Community of Caring Flag project started
2020 marks a transformative moment in human history, one that underscores our interdependent wellbeing. Our individual actions impact the wellbeing of others directly and indirectly. Inspired by traditional Tibetan Prayer Flags which are intended to bring promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom, this project came out of the PSU Fall 2020 Opening Task Force, Greater Plymouth Community & Alumni Subcommittee working with the Museum of the White Mountains and aims to provide the Plymouth community with an opportunity to share our common fears, to honor the suffering, and to grieve the loss brought on by the pandemic, but also the opportunity for all to help build community and unity between campus and community.
The idea is that people in the community as well as PSU students, faculty, and staff make flags that communicate ideas about dealing with COVID or other social justice issues. We will be sewing the flags together to make a series of "flag streams" that will be hung around town and campus.
Contact Cynthia for more information and specifics
~Cynthia Cutting
*Editor's note: Cynthia's project is designed for the Plymouth community (which doesn't mean you can't participate ) but perhaps you can use it as a model for your community. We all need community support in this time of Covid and social change.

| Marian Federspiel Do You Hear it Now |
This latest piece was done in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Like so many others, I was deeply disturbed by George Floyd's murder. As I sit here in my position of white privilege surrounded by so much natural beauty the world is being pierced by the shouts of Black Lives Matter.
If you view this entire work from a distance-all looks well-but if you look closely you see the stamens of the large flower have become fists and the center is a shouting mouth. All is not well. ~Marian Federspiel

Here is a quote and a book recommendation for ArtGenda:
"When there's a radical and true and important story happening at every moment, why turn to imagined tales?" Rives Galchen writes in the July 12 issue of the NYT magazine entitled 'The Decameron Project'. "Art is what makes life more interesting than art," the French Fluxus artist Robert Filliou noted in one of his works, suggesting that we don't catch sight of life at first glance."
And here is a book recommendation: If you are interested in un-imagined tales, and haven't read any of Zadie Smith's non-fiction, now is the time! I would start with her latest book of essays- 'Intimations' and if you get hooked, I highly recommend 'Feel Free' as well. Enjoy!
