We don't talk about our memberships enough. But they are so exciting and valuable!

Our rates are at an industry low of just $44 per month (that is the cost of an annual membership, hospital employees and spouse/child add ons are even less). You get so much value. You decide how much you want to get out of it. For a little more than a dollar per day, you take your health in your hands.

Staying healthy keeps you off of expensive medications, doctors visits, and makes you happier and more productive!

Dorothy Pintar has always made fitness a way of life.  She loves helping others do the same through her role as a group fitness instructor.  However, there was a period in her life where fitness truly became her lifeline.  Her journey shows the power fitness can have!  We are excited to share her story in our weekly "60 Second Inspiration" spot on the WBKB 6pm news.

Shakeology of the Month

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

Recipes by Kelly Lake
Chicken Teriyaki Meatballs with Broccoli and Snow Peas
You will fall for the fresh, grated ginger and perky scallion flavor that dances around the satisfying rice and chicken. Feel free to experiment with ingredients but don't wait to make this dish...it's fresh and delicious.  Enjoy!
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups long-grain rice
1 pound ground chicken
4 scallions, chopped and divided
2 TBSP grated fresh ginger (a piece about the size of your thumb)
1 TBSP canola oil
3 cups (approx.) snow peas
1 head broccoli
1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar

Method: Cook the rice according to the package directions. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce and sugar.

While the rice is cooking, in a large bowl, combine the chicken, scallions, and ginger. Shape into 8 meatballs. Set a large steamer pot to boil for the vegetables.

Heat oil in a large oven proof skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the meatballs, turning once when browned, and then an additional 1 to 2 minutes on the second side.  Remove from heat and place in the oven to finish cooking.
When the rice has 10 minutes of cooking time left, add the vegetables to the steamer pot, cover with the lid and allow to steam for 5 minutes. Drain quickly. Add vegetables and sauce to the meatballs.
Simmer until slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Serve over the rice and garnish with additional scallions. Serves four.
Tip: To keep the ground chicken from sticking to your fingers, wet your hands before forming the meatballs.

Keep Alpena Strong. Shop & Spend Local
We all have choices for our hard-earned dollars. From school shopping, groceries, clothing, home goods, and gifts to vehicles, travel, medications, restaurants, and yes FITNESS.

THANK YOU to those of you who have stayed and returned to BAC and Bay Urban Fitness. Every single membership counts. Every single dollar keeps us open. We are working hard to serve you, seven days per week, virtually at home and live at the club in this new pandemic climate.

Our team appreciates you and needs you.
We hope you can encourage your friends and family to join you. We WANT to be here for another 15 years to help the health and happiness of our community.

FACT: We are in a huge wave of businesses closing across Alpena.

As a local business owner of 15 years and a resident of 20 years, it is hard to watch it unfold. I hope that as a community we can look at the greater good of shopping and spending locally -- from job creation, to bolstering our local economy and amping up our tax base to contributing back to the city we serve.

As a business leader who pays rent, utilities, payroll and taxes on two local business, I am so proud to contribute to the financial health of our community, including funding local government, public services and schools. I know we need it. BAC uses local financial and insurance advisors, and employs a team of 30+ local people. BAC and Bay Urban are STRONG partners in our community.

We have donated tens of thousands of dollars to the schools to support local athletics and to just about every local non-profit by way of our Sweat for a Cause.

At BAC, our memberships range from $30 to $50 per month for all inclusive access, 7 days per week in a safe, sanitary and welcoming environment. Wellness costs less than being sick. Our specialty classes at our second facility, Bay Urban, are just $20 per month. Let's keep the lights on, heat on (fall is here!), doors open and instructors sweating along side you! We love cheering you on and celebrating your transformations. I urge our community to spend local and shop local across all industries.

Let's have fewer businesses close doors. Let's be ALPENA STRONG.

Sincerely,
Trina Gray, Owner, Bay Athletic Club and Bay Urban Fitness

PS--we KNOW that our club, classes and team help people live better lives and we take it seriously. Congrats to McKayle Carter (right) for her incredible journey and for including BAC in her health care. She inspired many as a member and now as an employee at the club, welcoming others! I love seeing her in the weight room, in classes at BAC and in VIP box at Bay Urban!

WE HAVE SOME EXCITING CHANGES HAPPENING IN GROUP EX IN OCTOBER!
As you know, we were closed for 88 days this spring and went ALL virtual. We reopened this summer with a hybrid of live and virtual and outdoor.
As we move into fall, we have more changes and improvements coming in October and November. We are making our 6 AM and 5:30 PM line up ALL LIVE. We know many of you want to be in person, and we are able to be safely distanced out in studio.

For October, we are KEEPING Tuesday and Thursday 6 AM classes ALSO virtual. We will pilot using the zoom line during the live class. We know many of you have been asking. We are working on some upgraded equipment (new laptop, hard wired internet, new instructor mic) to continue to make this a great experience, so please be patient in the process. We want to serve you where you want to be!

*STAY TUNED to your email and to Facebook for other EXCITING GROUP EX news happening in OCTOBER. We'll tell you soon!*

CIZE ON OCTOBER 1ST!
Zumba instructor Lisa Kruse is out of town and Sarah Morrison is jumping in to sub her Thursday 5:30 PM class with CIZE!  This is also a dance class, but using choreography you will learn instead of following along like Zumba.  Think of it as a step routine with no step.  This will happen just the first Thursday in October.

TWO NEW 4:30PM CLASSES - MORE CLASSES! YAY!
We will be adding Abs and Arms on Tuesdays at 4:30 PM and PiYo on Thursdays at 4:30 PM.  Both of these classes will be live in the BAC Studio.

YOGA MOVING FROM MONDAY TO TUESDAY
Margaret's 6:30pm Yoga class will now be on Tuesday nights at 5:30pm. This will be a live class in the BAC Studio. Many of you have been asking for an earlier yoga class and we are accommodating! Yoga is great for stress release, injury prevention, strength, flexibility and overall wellness.

LIVE CLASSES AND VIRTUAL CLASSES
The 6 AM and 5:30 PM classes Monday through Friday, will now ALL be live classes in the BAC Studio.
We ARE CONTINUING VIRTUAL as well on Tuesday and Thursday 6 AM. See above for more detail. We are piloting this hybrid at the 6 am time.

Stay with us friends, we are constantly brainstorming and improving for you.

9AM CLASSES MOVING TO 10AM
We want to be accommodating and still maintain consistency. In order to help parents, grandparents and caregivers, we are moving the 9 AM group ex line up to 10 AM. With COVID, the elementary schools across the county delayed start times, and it has been a conflict for many of you. Monday, Wednesday and Friday will remain virtual and Tuesday and Thursday will be live in the BAC Studio. Try this for a month! Let's see how it goes. THANK YOU for being flexible. For those of you who had the 9 AM school conflict, we urge you to COME at 10 AM so we see it working.

TWO POUND PARTIES
Ami Lenning is excited to host a Pound Party on Wednesday, October 14th and a special Halloween themed Pound Party on Friday, October 30th.  Both happening at Bay Urban Fitness.  This is a BONUS to our BAC members and $10 for guests.  Pound is a choreographed, cardio-based class with strength intervals set to the beat of the music using drumsticks.  It is a great workout that feels like a party!

ZUMBA GLOW PARTY LAST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH
Lisa Kruse wants to light up the BAC Studio big time on Thursday, October 29th during her 5:30 PM Zumba class.
Wear some fun colors and get ready to dance!
TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND
Eat for energy. Eat for Joy. Eat for health.
Food is our fuel. Our body breaks down the food that we eat in order to send nutrients to where they are needed so our body can function well. Did you know that different kinds of food can trigger different feelings and responses in your body based on the nutrient content that it delivers? This month, I want to share some of the foods that are known to help boost your energy, your joy and your overall health.

For energy: Sweet potatoes are becoming more and more popular. They are a fantastic source of complex carbohydrates, along with iron, magnesium, and vitamin C. Vitamin C is needed to transport fats into the cells of the body for energy production. Another great food source for energy is oatmeal. Oatmeal is one of the best sources of slow-releasing energy from low GI complex carbohydrates, to keep you going all morning. Also a great source of B-vitamins, which are needed to convert food into energy.

For joy: Our gut talks to our brain and it can have huge effects on our mood and the emotions we experience. To boost your mood try salmon. Salmon is packed with omega 3 fatty acids, which are proven to improve our mood. Omega 3s play a vital part of our body's cell manufacturing and makes our hair and skin shiny too. Or, if you are not a fan of fish you can try mushrooms. Vitamin D boosts our mood and has anti-depressant qualities. Mushrooms have a ton. We usually get our Vitamin D from the sun. But it is also found in mushrooms, egg yolks, cheese and fatty fish.

For health: To boost your overall immunity try to consume more veggies. Vegetables have so many nutrients that it's hard to just choose a few to focus on. But, if you would like some specifics take note that vitamins C and E are antioxidants that help to destroy free radicals and support the body's natural immune response. Sources of vitamin C include red peppers, oranges, strawberries, broccoli, mangoes, lemons and other fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E sources include nuts, seeds, spinach and broccoli.

We all deserve to feel our best. With the cooler fall weather and flu season approaching it is super important to pay attention to what we are eating, to compliment our fitness as a way to stay healthy from the inside out. If you need/want more coaching with your nutrition send me an email at [email protected]
