Happy New Year! One of my repeat resolutions is to avail myself of the many educational events in Charlotte. I am proud that Women's Impact Fund has a calendar full of upcoming opportunities from Lunch & Learns addressing education and environmental issues, to our Women LEAD series, to Women & Wisdom which will address civic engagement and celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the women's right to vote in this country.

Bryan Stevenson
As we celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. this week, I want to highlight the work of Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who will be speaking at Davidson College later this month. He authored Just Mercy, a stirring memoir of his criminal justice reform work which recently became a major motion picture. I highly recommend the book and film to you. Its message is transformative and his stories will move you.

Women LEAD: Additional Program Details Released

The 2020 Women LEAD program (previously known as the Non-Profit Board Leadership Program) will focus on skills-based leadership. This year's content is different from past years, so those who have attended the series before will learn something new. An announcement about the three-event series was featured in the December newsletter.

Today, we are excited to announce additional program details!  Check out this video from WIF member and SHARE Charlotte Executive Director, Amy Jacobs, who will facilitate the Women LEAD: Deep Dive on March 4, 2020  at the J.P. Morgan Client Center.

Women LEAD: Deep Dive Announcement

The Women LEAD: Deep Dive panel includes Donna Dunlap, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte; Deborah Majewski, WIF member and Senior Program Officer at the Leon Levine Foundation; Tina Bonner-Henry, community leader and philanthropist; and a leading officer from our event sponsor, J.P. Morgan.

The third session of the series will be #WomenGiveCLT, a networking event for women and local non-profit organizations looking for skills-based volunteers. We are thrilled to be collaborating with SHARE Charlotte and the Junior League of Charlotte for this inaugural event. Join us the evening of Wednesday, April 1 at Norfolk Hall! Tickets will go on sale on Monday, February 3. Discounted tickets will be available for those who attend one of the first two Women LEAD events. More details are available on our website. We look forward to your participation!

Systems Change: The Importance of Civic Engagement
Tuesday, March 10, 2020
Reception at 5:30 pm | Program at 7:00 pm
Tate Hall at Central Piedmont Community College

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote, move towards the Republican National Convention in Charlotte this August, and prepare to participate in the 2020 Census, the time is ripe to discuss the importance of civic engagement to community change.

How do we move the needle for our community when direct service and programming alone cannot fully address the challenging social issues in the community we face? We will gather a panel of local female leaders who will discuss the importance of advocacy, public will, government, and civic engagement.
Grants Corner
Grants Corner gives members a monthly update on this year's grant making process.
Written by Kristin Keen, Grants Reporter & Human Services Grants Sub-Committee Member

On January 9th, Grants committee members met for site visit training in anticipation of the upcoming visits to the 20 non-profits moving forward in our grants process.

What's next?
Site visits have been scheduled and our committee members will be out in the community between January 13th and February 6th. After visits are completed, the sub-committees will narrow down the 20 non-profits to 15 which will be considered at our Grants All-Committee meeting in early March.

What does this mean for you as a WIF Member?
We're in the home stretch to determine our 2020 grantees!  In future Grants Corner articles, we'll share the outcome of our March All-Committee meeting and the final 10 non-profit organizations that will be presented for your final vote.
Mission Moment: Matthews Free Medical Clinic
Mission Moment shares the impact that Women's Impact Fund grants have in our community.
Written by Lea Johnson, Community Impact Chair

Matthews Free Medical Clinic was awarded a one-year $80,000 grant in 2017 to expand their Screening and Care Program by hiring an additional nurse practitioner and medical assistant.  Our grant enabled 481 individuals to be served. Program outcomes included 100% of new diabetic patients receiving an A1C test, 100% of new patients being offered appropriate specialist and ancillary services and 100% of eligible new female patients being offered gynecological screening and services. Matthews Free Medical Clinic connected with five new community partners during our grant period and was able to put a streamlined new patient referral process in place.
Community Partner of the Month
Each month we highlight one of our generous community partners.
James McElroy & Diehl, a full service law firm here in Charlotte, is in its first year as a Community Partner. We are grateful to JMD as the Signature Series Sponsor of our January and June Lunch & Learns. Thank you!
