Next Round of Relief Grants to Open Next Week
Applications Accepted October 1
Delaware small businesses and nonprofits have another opportunity to apply for DE Relief Grants during the second round for applications. Applications for the the $30 million available in this next round will be accepted starting on October 1st. Grant money can be used for:
  • Purchasing equipment to make a workplace suitable for COVID-19 safety (such as PPE, plexiglass, air purifiers, etc.)
  • Refinancing of debt incurred due to COVID-19 (including State of Delaware HELP loans)
  • Advertising efforts undertaken as a result of COVID-19
  • Fixed expenses the applicant accrued during COVID-19

DPH Announces Latest COVID-19 Statistics
New Outbreaks in Long-Term Care Facilities
According to the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH), Delaware has a total of 631 fatalities due to COVID-19, 387 of whom were residents of a long-term care facility. Individuals who have died ranged in age from 21 to 104 years old. 

Fifty-three individuals are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Delaware, eleven are critically ill.

The latest Delaware COVID-19 statistics include:
  • 20,085 total laboratory-confirmed cases
  • New Castle County cases: 9,975
  • Kent County cases: 2,905
  • Sussex County cases: 6,718
  • Unknown: 487
  • Age range: 0 to 104
  • Hospitalized: 53; Critically ill: 11
COVID-19 Outbreaks in Long-term Care Facilities: The Division of Public Health is currently investigating COVID-19 outbreaks in several long-term care facilities throughout the state. Facilities where significant ongoing outbreaks are occurring include: 
  • Kentmere Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Wilmington; 28 residents and 24 staff members 
  • Cadia Healthcare Silverside in Wilmington; 19 residents and less than 10 staff members 
  • Country Rest Home in Greenwood; 18 residents and 14 staff members 
Staff members may include health care and non-health care personnel, such as facility vendors or other individuals working in the long-term care facility who may not be full-time facility employees. Read more

COVID-19 Science Update from CDC
Three COVID-19 Studies Analyze Risk 
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has published three studies that investigate the risks for infection with SARS-CoV-2 in health care settings. These studies look at occupational as well as nosocomial risks for patients and health care workers (HCWs). Across all three studies, higher levels of infection control and prevention protected both patients and HCWs. Read more

Enrollment is Underway
Solo or group practices can take advantage of MSD's group membership discount program and save 10% on 2020 dues! Solo practitioners - get creative and form your own network of physicians to qualify (such as your call group). All physicians within the group must be members of MSD to qualify. Mark Borer, MD
MSD member Mark S. Borer, MD was recently in the news as a featured expert on ways parents and children can navigate the stress and anxiety related to returning to school. Dr. Borer, a child and adolescent psychiatrist who is heavily involved with the the Delaware Child Psychiatry Access Program (DCPAP), shared tips in a Delaware State News article for helping children navigate this challenging time. Read article.
Angela M. Saldarriaga, MD
MSD member Angela M. Saldarriaga, MD was featured in a News Journal article this week as she shared her story of treating patients with COVID-19 and the significant challenges the hispanic community faces with the virus. To date, Dr. Saldarriaga has treated 110 patients for COVID-10, 20 were hospitalized and three died. The family physician shared the success her patients' experiences using plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patients and her efforts to spearhead a blood drive with the Red Cross.  Read more
In Memoriam
Robert Norman Ligo, MD 
MSD is sad to share the death of member Robert Norman Ligo, MD on September 13th. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, he was a colonel in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, the Medical Director at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the Medical Director at DuPont, and he finished his prestigious medical career at the Occupational Medical Clinic at Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Ligo was also an Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers School of Medicine and a member of the Occupational Medicine Advisory Committee at Columbia University and John Hopkins University.  Read more
