Growing young people as Christians, the Parish Giving Scheme and a review of reader ministry were among the topics under discussion by the Diocesan Synod, the church’s ‘parliament’, which met in Harrogate at the weekend.

A panel of experts chaired by the Dean of Ripon Cathedral will attempt to tackle the decline of North Yorkshire’s most rural communities. This initiative is thought to be the first of its type in England and North Yorkshire County Council has invited eight people with extensive knowledge of different sectors to come together to examine key issues and challenges.

Some 80 people of different faiths have taken part in the Wakefield Faiths Forum’s inaugural Walk for Peace, which took place on Saturday October 12. The walk started at St Peter’s Church in Horbury at 10.00am, where Fr Christopher Johnson, Vicar of Horbury with Horbury Bridge, offered the walkers God’s blessing.

Christians will be coming together to discuss how best to respond to new housing developments in their neighbourhoods at a conference this November. The New Housing Hub Conference will be on Saturday November 30 at Moortown Baptish Church in Leeds, from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Performances of choral pieces have been pleasing audiences in churches across the Diocese, as part of a German choir’s visit to the North. The Augustinian Church Choir, from Erfut in Germany, have recently completed a tour to mark 21 years of the partnership between the Diocese and the Erfurt Kirchenkreis.

“Do we still need the faculty system?” is the subject of an upcoming Ecclesiastical Law Society lecture to be held at Church House in Leeds next month. This lecture, the fourth in the ELS Northern Province Lecture series 2019, is hosted by Wrigleys Solicitors LLP.

As Hindu people celebrated Diwali, their festival of light triumphing over darkness, our bishops sent a message of greeting and goodwill. During Diwali, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly lit and the festival typically lasts five days, with the climax having occurred last Tuesday.

Bradford Cathedral hosted its first annual EcoExtravaganza on Saturday, October 26 and saw over 200 people visit the cathedral to engage with stalls, talks and children’s activities, as well as sampling the Fairtrade food on offer.

A church in Huddersfield has been marking its 200th birthday in style with a year of events and celebrations. The theme of ‘light’ was chosen to be the focus of the anniversary year for Holy Trinity Huddersfield, with a ‘Christ the Light’ candle burning at all services during the year.

A Whitkirk church have recently been blessed with new medical equipment to help in the community. Christ Church Lofthouse PCC members recently discussed the practicalities of fundraising to purchase a defibrillator at the church, and concluded that it would be some time before they could achieve their goal, until Clinical Engineering Ltd stepped in.

Refugees and asylum seekers from war torn parts of the world enjoyed the peaceful setting of Parcevall Hall recently. The group were all members of Bradford Immigration and Asylum Seekers’ Support and Advice Network (BIASAN) and had two days of activities including walks in the Dales, crafts and kite-making.

A vicar in our diocese has recently completed a fundraising walk for MIND, walking along the paths of a saint. The Revd Maureen Browell, Vicar of West Barnsley, set out to walk St Cuthbert’s Way, which threads its way through the countryside of the Scottish Borders and Northumberland.

Once a month Fountains Church Bradford will be hosting
New Wine speakers from the New Wine national leadership team. They hope these celebrations will be times of extravagant worship, equipping teaching and an encounter with the Holy Spirit.

celebration of Jean Vanier’s life
will be taking place on Sunday, November 3 at St John's Church, Bolling Road, Ilkley. Starting at 2pm it will be Led by Rev Peter Willox and Canon Bob Brooke, with inclusive worship, prayer, drama and a choice of music, dance and craft activities.

Presidential address to synod

Watch the presidential address from Diocesan Synod in October. Urgent political business in Westminster meant that Bishop Nick Baines was absent from the Diocesan Synod, meaning his address was read out on his behalf by the Bishop of Kirkstall, The Rt Revd Paul Slater.
