During these hot days and with the smoke from the fires it has been difficult to hike so instead I turned my attention to my vegetable garden, a plot I have in our local community. This summer, to my surprise I have a gopher in my plot, first time in four years. A gopher is a burrowing rodent that creates tunnels underneath the soil and can be quite a destroyer of a garden which has been the case for me these last three months.

I found myself looking at my plot, totally cleaned out of all my summer crops: cucumbers, butternut squash, tomatoes, and peppers. The only thing that remains is the swiss chard due to its tuberous roots, I can only surmise that the roots are too hard to pull into their tunnel, so they have let them be. If it not were for the veggie labels that remain it's hard to remember if I planted anything at all.

I cannot help but see the mirror being reflected to me for what's happening in my garden is also happening in the outside world. This is a different year for me in my garden, as it is a vastly different year for everyone as well. An unexpected event, for me the gopher, for all of us, a pandemic. Just as I did not see this rodent coming nor did any of us see the extent that COVID would affect our lives.

I must admit when I first looked at the empty plot, I felt overwhelmed and defeated reminding me that many of us are experiencing exactly these feelings the last six month. And as I look at my plot, I feel challenged as to how I’m going to fix this problem. After some contemplation rather than seeing this as a disaster or the worst thing that can happen in a garden, I saw it as an opportunity to think outside the box and come up with ideas on how to adjust to an unexpected event. When it came down to it, I changed my thought about the situation. After speaking to some expert gardeners, I was advised to lay down chicken wire ten inches below the surface of the topsoil to block the gophers from coming up thru the soil. Will it do the trick, not sure but I hope so.

“Where thought goes, energy flows”

What are your thoughts? Whatever you are thinking it’s guaranteed your energy will go there and it will create your reality. Thoughts are powerful, they have created our past, they create our present and our future. They create our beliefs, our likes, and dislikes.

" All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything.
What we think we become." - Buddha quote

Observe your thoughts and ask yourself if that is the thought you want to have. The one thing we have control over is our thinking. If you do not like your thought(s) then change them. Since you created them, you have the power to uncreate it. No one else can do that for you other than you.

As for my garden, my thoughts are, I expect a great bounty this winter of cabbage, broccoli, kale and much more.
