Gloucester Officially Cuts the Ribbon for its LOVE Sign

We were honored to be joined by some special guests during this week's LOVE Sign Ribbon Cutting, including Dr. JJ Orth, chairman of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors and Carol Steele, Gloucester's Acting County Administrator!

The sign is located beside Whitley’s Peanut Factory at Gloucester Point, which also happens to be the location of Gloucester’s Tourist Information Center.

The new sign is part of the “WanderLove” campaign, which is being used by the Virginia Tourism Commission, to promote road trips throughout Virginia as a way to re-enter travel as the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.

The Gloucester “LOVE” sign is specifically designed to promote the County’s Tourism slogan, “For History, For Beauty, For Fun.” Stop by and check it out!
Social Services Completes Expansion Project

The Gloucester Department of Social Services has completed an expansion project that will allow them to better serve their customers.

DSS has added additional family visitation rooms, interview rooms, offices and conference room space. This additional space allows them to provide improved customer service to citizens. The Department has also returned to using the main front door at the entrance to the building.

The Drop Box will soon be relocated to the right side of the parking lot, at the end of the center barrier. This will allow customers to remain in their vehicle and use the Drop Box to drop their paperwork without having to exit their vehicles. The Drop Box will be open during operating hours and will be routinely checked throughout the day to ensure timely receipt of customers' items.

The Department looks forward to serving the citizens of Gloucester County!
Over a Dozen Participants Attended Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism's History Camp this Week

Did you hear some strange noises coming from the Court Circle area this past week? Not to worry - it was from the first day of Gloucester Parks, Recreation & Tourism's History Camp, complete with musket firing demonstrations for its participants.

Throughout the week-long camp, campers went behind the scenes of the Gloucester Museum of History, visited Rosewell Plantation, tried their hands at archaeology, and more - all while learning about Gloucester County's rich history and how its residents and events had impacts on our state and nation.

County Officials Urge Preparedness for what Could be an Active Storm Season

Gloucester County’s Emergency Management department is urging residents to make sure they are prepared for the threats that can come along with hurricane season, which will stretch into the fall.

With several storms already impacting coastal areas this early in the season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting an active year.

To help residents prepare, Gloucester’s Emergency Management Department is planning a Preparedness Expo on Saturday, August 7 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to coincide with Virginia’s Tax-Free Holiday. The Expo, which will be full of preparedness materials, activities, and information, will be held in partnership with and at the Gloucester Home Depot store.

Disabled Veterans May Claim a Personal Property Tax Exemption

Gloucester County Commissioner of the Revenue JoAnne Harris reminds residents that the Disabled Veterans Personal Property Exemption went into effect on Jan. 1 of this year.

Who’s looking for a running buddy? Well look no further! Meet Kobe!

Kobe is a two-and-a-half-year-old Coonhound mix. He is neutered, heartworm negative, up to date on all vaccines and ready to make moves out of the shelter!

He is such a great boy with a huge personality! Kobe would benefit from a home that has adequate time to teach him what life is all about and allows exercise time! He is very food motivated and beggin’ to learn cool new tricks!

He came to Gloucester County Animal Control shelter in July of 2021. It was reported to us that he guarded his food, which resulted in a small bite history. However here at the shelter, where he has packed on quite a few pounds, we have not seen any of this unwanted behavior.

We here at the shelter are working with this boy daily, but he deserves a forever home! If you are interested in meeting Kobe, please reach out to Gloucester County Animal control at 804-693-5290 OR please send a request for an adoption application to Jwilson@gloucesterva.info or Obarrero@gloucesterva.info.

Replayed Post on Money, Health and Other Things

The Virginia Cooperative Extension will be taking a pause from its series on retirement and revisit its predatory lending series.

With moratoriums on evictions and foreclosures expiring at the end of the month, predatory lending practices will sadly likely be more prevalent this summer.
