The Last Sunday After the Epiphany |
Mark 9:2-9
Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

A Message from Libby
Surgery went well last Tuesday and I was able to come home that evening and sleep in my own bed! Now I’m resting and healing. This week I’ll have several doctors’ visits to hear from the pathology report and begin determining further treatment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your prayers and messages of concern. The flower arrangement from Grace Church graces our dining room table and brings hope of spring color!
On Sunday, February 14, Grace’s own the Rev. Steve White will be the Celebrant and Preacher for an Agape Service from the Grace Chapel. Please be ready with your own food and drink that morning, adding a cloth and perhaps a candle to create your own sacred place. Steve is also available throughout February for pastoral care.

COVID VACCINE CALL CENTER OPENING
Since opening COVID vaccinations to those 75 and older, the state has been inundated with complaints from those who have found booking an appointment online difficult to figure out. Gov. Baker today announced the launch of a COVID vaccine call center.
It is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those 75 and older who now qualify for the vaccine can reach it by just dialing 211 and pressing "2" to schedule an appointment. It's available in English and Spanish with translators available for other languages. You may face wait times.

After five months of steady work, the Profile Committee is in its final phase of editing two documents and constructing the online Grace Profile before our search for our New Rector goes "live" in early March.

CHANGE IN PRAYER LIST ON MARCH 1
Praying for each other and for the needs of the world is a vital part of any faith community, and Grace Church is particularly skilled at this aspect of our communal life. During this time of transition, it’s become apparent that we need to make a few changes in our lengthy prayer list to create a more intentional system of maintaining it. On March 1, the list of “Members of the Parish Family” and “Others We Love” for whom we pray will reset to zero and we’ll begin a fresh new list. We don’t want anyone to fall through the cracks and always want to be generous in our prayers for others.
You can help by sending an e-mail to ([email protected]) if you want a person whose name is currently on the list to stay on the list beyond March 1 or if you want to add someone who isn’t currently on the list. Libby will then keep a record of the date the name was added along with who added it and either she or a member of the Healing Team will periodically call you to check on how that person is doing and if their situation has improved enough to come off the list. We can then give thanks. In this way our prayers can be both generous and more focused

Last fall, The Rev. Libby Wade led a group of South County Episcopalians in the Episcopal Church Film-Based Race Dialogue Series Sacred Ground. Pennie Curry, Jim Wade, and Lee Cheek completed the course. Meredith Haider and Dindy Anderson are currently participating in a group sponsored by St. John's Williamstown. All are encouraged to take advantage of the next opportunity in 2021,TBA.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EfM)
Trying to find God among the booming buzzing voices of modernity and antiquity, of textual criticism, the documentary hypothesis, proof texting, and value assertions, is difficult. Layered on to this is the research of feminist, black, colonialist and other scholars and the shouting voices of politicians and protestors claiming that such and such a position is “bible based.” In our discussion this week, we likened this to a hand reaching through a swarm of bees to reach the honey.
We wrote this prayer: God, who has given us a world of riches but requires us to take the risks to realize them, we pray that even though we must endure trials and distractions, we continue our search through study to bring us closer to you, so that we may find and produce the pure honey of love. AMEN.

Good News Gardens Book Group:
Invitation to a diocesan book-study group
In this compelling and readable new book, local writer and pastor Anna Woofenden, a prophetic voice in the faith and food movement, writes about her experience founding and nurturing the Garden Church in San Pedro, California. As Sara Miles (author, and founder/director of The Food Pantry) says in the book’s Foreword, “Woofenden shares the story of what happened when she gardened, worshiped, and ate with anyone who would join her. As churches across the Western world wither, what would it take to find a raw, honest, gritty way of doing church – one rooted in place, nurtured by grace, and grounded in God’s expansive love? What would it take to carry the liturgy outside the gates? What if we were to discover that in feeding others, we are fed? This is God’s table. Come and eat.”
Our conversations will take place on Zoom over three Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., Feb. 11 and 25. You are welcome to attend as many sessions as you can. “Into the Light: Finding Hope through Prayers of Lament”

Our six-week Epiphany Bible Study Series focusing on prayers of lament will welcome a special guest leader this coming Tuesday. The Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas, our diocesan missioner for creation care, will lead us in a session titled, “Creation Laments. Even if you have not been able to attend the other sessions, you are welcome for this important topic. The South Berkshire Episcopal/Lutheran Churches will gather this Tuesday, 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Zoom. We hope you will be part of our inter-congregational Zoom Community!
Beginning Tuesday, March 2 at 7PM
Using the books “Sabbath as Resistance” by Walter Brueggemann as our primary study guide and “The Sabbath” by Abraham Joshua Heschel as a supplement, we hope to explore Sabbath beyond the ideas of simple legal prohibitions and discover together Sabbath’s potential to change the culture in which we live. How do we break our culture’s addiction with consumption and busyness? The Sabbath may just be the answer we’ve been looking for! How will this work? First purchase the book “Sabbath as Resistance” from your favorite independent book seller and read the first chapter. Then join us beginning March 2, 2021 at 7 p.m. for six weeks on Zoom. Rev. Erik Karas along with Rabbi Jodie Gordon and Rabbi Neil Hirsch will facilitate the discussion with congregants from Hevreh, Christ Trinity, Grace, and St. Paul’s. We are excited to have the chance to be with one another before Passover and Easter!
