A Message from the Mayor

Cumberland City Council is enjoying a win over Parramatta City Council following a friendly cricket match at George Parry Oval, Mona Park last weekend. Following the council amalgamations in 2016, this has been the first match between Cumberland and Parramatta. This friendly match is quite the tradition for our two Councils, particularly for the former Holroyd Council and Parramatta. While winners are grinners, I would like to thank the Parramatta side for a good match, some great sportsmanship from their Councillors and for sharing our love of cricket.

The Trolls movie will be playing at our Christmas in the Garden event.

It was an honour to recently visit the team at Good360 and see their amazing work. Good360’s mission is to transform lives by providing hope, dignity, and a sense of

renewed possibility to individuals, families, and communities impacted by disasters or other

challenging life circumstances. I’d like to thank Good360 Australia for donating more than one thousand hand sanitisers for our Christmas in the Gardens event on Saturday 12 December. I look forward to seeing you all there.

I also encourage everyone to pay a visit to the new pop-up park on Dunmore Street in Wentworthville this summer. After hearing from the community, we’ve created this innovative space as a way of bringing together the natural world and urban environment. The pop-up will be on trial until February 2021.

Christmas in Cumberland 2020

The countdown for Christmas has officially begun, and we have a full program of activities on offer to celebrate this festive season.

Come along to our COVID-safe ‘Christmas in the Gardens’ at the Auburn Botanic Gardens on Saturday 12 December 2020 (6pm-9pm) or join our live-stream.

We have a fantastic line-up that includes Carols, an outdoor cinema showing a Trolls movie, meet and greet with Troll characters, letters to Santa, take-home colouring activity packs, food and Christmas lights.

Council is also hosting a range of activities at the libraries including ’12 Days of Christmas Bedtime Stories’, and an online Christmas Photo Challenge, where you can win a Christmas hamper every week in December.

Our ‘Shop Local this holiday season’ social media competition gives shoppers the chance to win up to three $100 Stockland Mall vouchers when you shop at local business featured on the Council website.

Make a splash at the pools this summer

With our iconic Aussie summer here, it’s time to pull out your swimsuit and goggles and get ready to make a splash at one of Cumberland City’s swim centres this summer.

Wentworthville Swim Centre is currently closed for a major refurbishment and is expected to reopen in February 2021. There will be a new program pool, new change rooms and a café. A lift will also be installed to allow people with disabilities to use the existing 50 metre pool.

Be sure to cool down by visiting one of our pools at Guildford, Merrylands, Granville or Auburn.

16 Days of Activism in Cumberland City

To mark the international campaign, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, Council has unveiled a red bench at Merrylands Park, in partnership with The Red Rose Foundation.

A red bench is a permanent visual reminder that we all must work to change the ending and call out abusive behaviour in our families, neighbourhoods and broader communities.

With this simple gesture, it is hoped the red bench will be a place that inspires conversations about domestic violence and raises awareness and opportunities for this important issue to remain visible.

Community Gardens are now open

The Merrylands Community Garden has reopened to the public, with introduced COVID safe protocols in place.

Community gardens are places where people come together to grow fruit and vegetables, enjoy healthy exercise, meet new people and share fresh food. They allow people to connect with nature and participate in their local community.

Opening hours are as follows:

Monday: 8am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm

Wednesday: 8am to 10am

Friday: 8am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm
