Costa Ruggers come from behind to stun Bosco!
The Mira Costa Mustangs took on the defending SoCal Champs from St. John Bosco in their home opener. The Costa boys were facing an extremely physically imposing Braves side, easily outweighing the Mus­tangs by 100 lbs. on average. This team just finished winning the HS Football National Championship.
Costa got on the board early with a 31 meter penalty kick from Fly-half Giuseppe Meola. The Braves answered by driving the ball down the pitch for a Try making it 3-7 Meola hit another penalty kick from 27. A few minutes later Bosco was called for a penalty. Captain & Scrum-half Christian Hunter found the Braves sleeping & raced 63 meters for a Try. Meola converted and the score was 13-7 at the half. Read Mor e
Girls Basketball starts the season strong!

 The Lady Mustangs are doing great at the start of the season. The Varsity Team took first place at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions! It was their first trip to Santa Barbara and the girls had a great time bonding and playing together! They have started Bay League with 2 wins! The JV team has been also doing well playing competitively at both the Culver City JV Winter Tournament and the Redondo Beach tournament. Boys Soccer begins season with a "golden goal" in overtime!

The Boys Soccer program kicked of the Bay League last week with games against Peninsula on Tuesday and Palos Verdes on Friday.
Varsity beat Peninsula in a home game with a dramatic 2-1 win on a “golden goal” in overtime. Senior Alex Rosas-Juarez scored to end the game and start the celebration. Senior Evan Coons scored earlier in the game to tie it 1-1. Senior goalkeepers Drew Rohm and Jared Tang split the game and made 3 saves each. Senior captains Alex Rieg and Carson Nguyen led the team with their strong play in the midfield. Senior Kyle Chen kept the backline solid with a strong performance. JV won 4-0 and FS won 7-0 for the sweep.

Wrestling kicks off the year with
competitive tournaments!

 The Costa Varsity Girls wrestling team was in a 32 team tournament on Saturday at Brea Olinda High School.
This is the biggest tournament of the year!

On Thursday, January 2, the Varsity Girls wrestled at South Hills High School in a 20 team tournament.

Katherine Clark – 121 lbs – (Jr) – 7th Place
The Varsity Boys wrestled in a 64 team National Tournament with teams from California, Washington, Arizona and Nevada. This is a great tournament with really great teams.

Costa MUN gears up for
the New Year!

After Mira Costa Model UN’s success at their travel conferences in the fall, they hosted LAIMUN XXV, which was attended by schools from around the South Bay. MUN is now preparing for their upcoming conferences at Harvard and Chicago. Students will debate 4 days, for over 20 hours, competing against students from schools around the world.

On Jan. 11th, MCHS comedy improv students participated in their third annual match against professional improv troupe April’s Fools at the Pier Avenue Second Story Theater in Hermosa Beach. Students squared off against the group of adult players in a hilarious showdown that was met with tremendous audience laughter and applause. Final score: MCHS 14, April’s Fools 19.

Choir has outstanding performances over the holidays!

On Wednesday, December 11, Choral Union and Vocal Ensemble performed for the Manhattan Beach Neptunian Women’s Club annual holiday luncheon. For many years, these two choirs have sung at this lovely event providing music of the season and giving the women a preview of the upcoming winter concert. Thanks always goes to the Neptunian Women’s Club for this invitation and all they do for the community.
On Saturday, December 14, Vocal Ensemble provided caroling in downtown Manhattan Beach. Divided into two smaller groups in the traditional caroling style, they roamed the streets of Manhattan Beach, caroling in the stores and to the patrons shopping, even to the Police and Fire Department! Many of the shop owners said, “Please come back again next year!” This is an annual tradition that brings such joy to the community. Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams enjoy first annual Girls v Boys game last weekend!

The Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams had a fun day as the boys and girls teams exchanged sticks and the different teams played each other. It was a great day with all teams enjoying the matches!

Girls Lacrosse:
On Sunday, February 2, K through 8th grades are invited to a fast-paced lacrosse clinic hosted by the Mira Costa Girls Lacrosse Team and Coaching Staff.
The camp will focus on key elements of Lacrosse such as ball and stick skills along with footwork and positioning.

Band Winter Updates!

A warm “thank you” to all that attended the Winter Concert. It was a great way to get everyone in the mood for the holidays and Winter Break. Band is now gearing up for their big trip to Washington D.C. in April with all the bands, which includes the concert ensembles, jazz band, marching band and color guard!
In addition, congratulations to several students who made it into the CBDA (All State) Honor Band and the SCSBOA Honor Bands.

Girls Soccer takes on Leuzinger and Centennial High School this week!

 The Mira Costa Girls Soccer team started off the season with both the Varsity and JV teams winning the South High Holiday tournament and the F/S team taking 2nd place.
League play started last week. The Varsity team suffered their first lost against Palos Verdes High school, but are looking to come back strong this week against Leuzinger and Centennial High School

Boys Basketball starts off season with 3-0 record!

Costa Varsity Boys Basketball has had a great start in Bay League games with a 3-0 record so far!

Success at the first Lego League Championship Tournament!

The first Lego League championship tournaments for the LA region were held on December 14-15 at La Canada High School where LA’s 80 best Lego Robotics Teams duked it out.
A team of 5th and 6th graders from Pennekamp and MBMS won the Innovative Solution award for their project to develop a bike sensor system for improving cyclist safety and the Robot Performance award for the top robot score (510 points) among all championship teams.
They also received the Global Innovation Award nomination (only 2 were given out the entire weekend) which qualifies them to compete for FIRST’s Global Innovation Award ($20,000). Semi-finalists teams will be invited to meet June 7-9 at Disney World in Orlando, FL. Read More
