February 4, 2020

Happy February! We know it is a rough month for many as we hit the mid-way point for the school year. Winter break was eons ago and summer break seems so far away. Take a moment for yourself and get the desperately needed shot of inspiration in the form of short stories from fellow teachers in Seed to Apple and check out this TEDx talk by Washington NBCT Kimber Lybbert.

Now get ready to take the next steps to boost your career. First, save May 7 on your calendar for the not-to-be-missed Leadership Lab in SeaTac, WA with the dynamic equity guru Dr. Adeyemi Stembridge. Next, check out these amazing teacher leadership opportunities and share them with colleagues. Finally, there is no better way to pay it forward like recognizing the contributions of colleagues and friends who are in the trenches working to educate the next generation. If they also happen to be a Washington State teacher take a moment and nominate them for Teacher of the Year.

Our Stories from School bloggers have been busy this month, adding eight new posts to the blog. We are excited to have guest bloggers and NBCTs Heather Byington and David Buitenveld share their story. The middle school math teacher and elementary teacher discusses co-teaching math for a quarter. Read about their journey in "National Boards: An Odyssey of Collaboration". Second year teacher, Leanne Schumacher, opens up about the challenges of being a new teacher and seeking help in the "Wrong Kind of Tired". Inessa Bazelyuk shares her personal story of having parents whose first language is not English and the current language barriers with parents.

Inclusionary Practices Project Update

CSTP is assisting OSPI in implementing the Inclusionary Practices Project established by the legislature in the 2019 session. Each month we'll provide an update about the project and opportunities educators can engage with the project.

There are opportunities for educators to learn more about inclusionary practices as the Statewide Professional Development Providers are launching their work.
  • The Washington School Administrators Association (WASA) has brought together a cohort of 43 school districts from across the state that will convene regularly to work with inclusion expert Katie Novak on implementing inclusionary practices across their district systems.
  • The Washington Education Association (WEA) has launched online courses on inclusionary practices through e-Learning for Educators and will be rolling out face-to-face trainings in March. See their flyer for more information.
The Washington Educational Research Association (WERA) is hosting a 1-hour webinar at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 10, about the project. Hear from OSPI leaders and partners about the project's work now and in the school year to come. Registration for the webinar is open to all.

You can find out more information about the project on OSPI's website .
Save the Date: Leadership Lab on May 7Lab

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Leadership Lab on May 7th. This will be a dynamic day of learning featuring Dr. Adeyemi Stembridge, author of Culturally Responsive Education in the Classroom. An Equity Framework for Pedagogy. Participants will hear insights from local teachers and administrators who have engaged in a residency process with Dr. Stembridge. Using a fishbowl process, they will share how their experiences challenged them to think deeply about equity through the lens of classroom pedagogy that produces authentic student engagement as well as powerful planning questions and processes.

CSTP will open registration in mid-February. Please sign-up here for notifications and to be the first to receive the registration link.
Revisiting Teacher Leadership in SpokaneTOY

In January, we kicked off an exciting continuation of our partnership with the NorthEast Washington ESD #101. We brought together teams of teachers and administrators to revisit and revise work being done in the region around teacher leadership and small tests of change.

During this session we worked with the teams to model and experience collaborative practices and plan next steps. The teams used the CSTP Teacher Leadership Framework as a foundation for their own projects including implementing PLC structures, strengthening parent and community partnerships, easing freshman transitions, growing positive relationships with students school wide, and implement a district wide focus on equity.

Dear Grown-ups... Sincerely, Gen Z | Kimber Lybbert | TEDxSpokane

Warning...you may need a tissue when you watch this. This TEDx Talk features NBCT Kimber Lybbert in the Moses Lake School District. She talks about bridging the generation gap with Gen Z and the struggles of the Class of 2020.

Her vulnerability and desire to do more resonates with educators today as she remarks "It has been years since Miguel, Anthony and Alex have walked through my door. But everyday when I take roll, I wonder how their stories would have ended differently had I done more than simply marked them absent."
