June 2, 2020
Chers Amis,

L'Ecole Française du Maine stands with everyone facing injustice and is committed to challenging and changing the biases that lead to discrimination. This past week the world was shaken by the senseless death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

We share the pain and sadness of this tragedy and recognize the School's important role in making our would a better place. This starts by teaching peace and kindness at a young age and helping to foster a new generation of global citizens who value each and every person equally. We need to teach children to embrace differences and celebrate the beauty of all cultures and backgrounds.

Our mission is "to offer an educational experience entirely in French, instilling in our students a constant curiosity towards foreign languages and the diverse cultures of the world. It's through this commitment to language and culture that we're able to provide a diverse, mind-opening educational experience in an atmosphere of understanding and discovery."

In light of what we witnessed this past week, we feel more committed than ever to that mission. Thank you for joining us in our efforts, together we can make a lasting difference- one child at a time.

Sincerely,
Willy LeBihan
Head of School

Lessons in Racial Equality

We expanded our library with books for various age groups to help our students navigate and understand recent events. In English class, students have been having age appropriate discussions and are learning about how Americans throughout our history have stood up for what is right. This week they have talked about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman and will continue to have these conversations throughout the remainder of the school year.

Mount Mica Mine Gravel Pit ...transported to South Freeport

As part of their physical science curriculum, our elementary students are studying rocks and minerals. The pandemic may prevent our elementary students from  traveling to Oxford County this spring, however, they will still explore the gravel of the most famous mine of Maine: Mt. Mica of Paris; (Yes, Paris of all places!)

Head of School, Willy LeBihan, a lifelong geology buff who is always looking for an opportunity to go dig in the dirt, traveled to Mt. Mica in West Paris, Maine. He collected enough sand and gravel for our students to look for minerals (such as tourmaline, quartz and beryl amongst many)

Our little "geologists" had so much fun searching for gems, and some with great luck! They begged to do it again this Friday, and so we shall !
