Clerk's investigation uncovers $700k Port Authority fraud scheme

After a 20-month investigation initiated by my Inspector General's office, the FDLE has arrested nine suspects for allegedly defrauding the Lee County Port Authority out of more than $700,000. The scheme involved fraudulent payments for janitorial services at the airport. Portions of payments were funneled back to the contracted company's manager.

This racketeering scheme would not have been uncovered without the strong partnership our skilled investigators have with FDLE and the State Attorney's office. I am also especially thankful for the anonymous tip that led to these arrests. If you suspect any fraud, waste or abuse at county government agencies, please file a report.
Civil case limits increase in 2020

On Jan. 1, 2020, the amount you can claim in small claims cases will increase from $5,000 to $8,000. County civil case limits will also increase from $15,000 to $30,000. Any cases with claims above $30,000 will be heard in circuit court.

When filing a civil case, you must include a civil cover sheet that declares how much money is at stake and disputes exceeding $8,000. Filing fees remain the same. If you do not have a lawyer, you can get more information about filing by contacting our Self-Help Center at 239-533-2835.
