Message from the Superintendent
Dear Berryessa community,

The holiday break is upon us, and I would like to take a moment to thank you for your valuable contributions, hard work and support during 2019. We have much to be thankful for and to celebrate!

During the month of December, we have showcased our student talent in a variety of ways. Our students have organized holiday drives to support those in need, they have created special cards and gifts of gratitude, and helped bring our community together for some holiday fun. We hope you enjoy our stories of generosity, community, and holiday spirit.

On behalf of the Berryessa Union School District Board of Trustees and our District administration, we would like to wish you a very happy and restful holiday break! May your holidays be merry and bright! We look forward to an exciting and productive 2020!

With great BUSD pride,

Dr. Roxane Fuentes

Musical Performances
Berryessa Union School District is proud of the tremendous musical talent found at our schools. Every winter holiday, we have the opportunity to highlight and showcase our students through our winter concerts and musical performances. This month, our middle school bands, choirs and orchestras have all performed at school concerts, local events and even at Christmas in the Park! Our wonderful choir and music teachers have helped our students achieve great success and continue to push our students to reach their maximum musical potential. We congratulate all of our talented students and staff for their hard work and dedication! Bravo!
Look Within: Reflections Program
When parents and teachers come together, we help enhance and enrich our students’ education. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) dedicates a lot of time and effort to support schools in everyday activities, programs, events, fundraisers and community involvement, just to name a few.

The PTA Reflections Program has helped implement new activities where students are able to display their artistic/creative side by creating original music, songs, poetry and much more. The theme of the Reflections Program is “Look Within,” and students are encouraged to design with no specific set of guidelines or rules. They are able to use their skills and imagination to develop projects that fit under categories, such as film, dance, art, etc. Staff from the school, including the principal, judge the projects not only on the actual work itself, but also the description used by the student and how it ties it all together. Winners, who are chosen at the school level, move up to the District 6 category. From there, winners can move up to the state competition in Sacramento.

Working together definitely helps spark creativity and imagination in our students. We thank all of our schools who participated this year and encourage more to showcase their talent in the future. Below is a picture of the district winners and a video from one of our winners!

Superhero Toy Distribution
Our schools hold a very special place in the hearts of our community members. One teacher, Elaine Watkins, dedicated 28 years to teaching at Toyon Elementary. Following her steps in service is her son, Dave Watkins, who is making a great impact in the lives of students! Dave works for Nob Hill, where he has been involved in collecting money for the 2nd Harvest Food Bank. A partial amount of donations is used to purchase teddy bears for children.

On December 12th, Dave, along with other volunteers dressed as Justice League characters, visited Toyon and distributed an outstanding number of brand new teddy bears to our students - a total of 87 to be exact! Principal Castillou told us, “This was so much fun! The students were very excited and love receiving teddy bears from their heroes.”

Toyon was overjoyed to receive such a wonderful surprise, especially during this holiday season!
Amazing Santa and Mrs. Claus
When we think of Christmas and the holiday spirit, chances are we are most likely thinking of Santa Claus, and of course, Mrs. Claus! In order to continue the magic and spread the joy of happiness during this season, Laneview and Toyon Elementary had two very special guests.

Cookies with Santa is an annual event at Toyon where Mr. and Mrs. Claus have been volunteering their time for the past seven years. Teachers and staff help organize the visit and crafts, while their PTA organizes the photography. It is truly priceless seeing the students’ faces when they finally get to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. Through their eyes and expressions of excitement, we are reminded about the joy of giving back to the community and coming together to celebrate the holidays.

Laneview has also kept this holiday tradition for 20 years! It is a full sensory experience! Before going inside to see Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the community is able to walk through Laneview’s Courtyard, filled with lights, Christmas blow up decorations, and the trees decorated by each class. Families are able to purchase pictures and food. They are also able to enjoy face painting and balloon artists, as well as raise funds for Science Camp.

During this event, Laneview goes above and beyond for Special Education students. Before the event opens up to the community, Laneview creates a welcoming space with reduced environmental stimuli, so that students feel comfortable to more fully enjoy the event.
Giving Back Campaigns
Caring, compassion, and kind-heartedness are just some of the qualities you will find throughout our schools. Especially during this time of giving, our students show us what it takes to come together and provide for those who cannot enjoy the holidays the way we can. Our middle schools have been hosting giving back campaigns, which are all student-led efforts. Sierramont Middle School finalized their campaign of collecting food donations. Morrill Middle School participates in a year-round food drive, and takes the
initiative to ramp up the campaign during this holiday season. You can continue to support Morrill’s campaign by donating non-perishable items!
