NEC Policy Staff Brief Members on Federal Policy Activity
|
On January 14, 2020, the Council launched its new Quarterly Federal Policy Briefings, where our policy staff provide timely updates to members on current and upcoming federal legislative and regulatory activity in Washington, DC. If you were not able to participate, a PowerPoint presentation outlining the topics covered is available using the link button below. If you are interested in learning more about what was covered during the briefing, we encourage you to reach out directly to the Council's staff, as listed on the final slide, and we would be happy to update you on the issues that are of interest to you. Op-Ed Outlines 2020 Wish List for Congress
|
|
NEC President & CEO Jim Brett outlined several areas where action from Congress in 2020 will support the New England economy in an op-ed that appeared in several publications in January. Specifically, Jim urged Congress to invest in infrastructure, support investment in offshore wind and other clean energy, and ensure banking services for the cannabis industry.

The purpose of these calls is to brainstorm about priorities, initiatives, and programming for each committee over the course of the year. Former FERC Commissioner Addresses Energy & Environment Committee
|
On January 6, 2020, the NEC Energy & Environment Committee gathered for its first meeting of the year, welcoming guest speaker Cheryl LaFleur, a former FERC Commissioner. Commissioner LaFleur highlighted several key issues that will be on FERC's agenda in the year ahead. Following her presentation, the committee held a planning discussion to brainstorm about priorities and programming for 2020. The meeting was hosted by Holland & Knight in its Boston office. ary 10, 2020, the NEC Financial Services Committee will host a small group discussion with Rep. Stephen Lynch, a member of the House Financial Services Committee. The meeting will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the Hampshire House, immediately following the Council's Congressional Roundtable breakfast with the Congressman.

Higher Education Committee Meets with Rep. Lori Trahan; Holds 2020 Planning Discussion
|
Members of the NEC Higher Education Committee had the opportunity to meet with
Rep. Lori Trahan, a member of the House Committee on Education & the Workforce, on January 27, 2020. The small group discussion followed a Council-wide Congressional Roundtable with Rep. Trahan, hosted by The Hampshire House in Boston. Rep. Trahan briefed members on matters before the Committee this year, as well as her own education policy priorities.
The following day, the committee held a 2020 planning discussion via conference call to identify and discuss priorities for the committee for the year ahead.

Council Urges Senate to Support USMCA, Lauds Passage
|
|
On December 14, 2020, the Council sent a letter to all members of the region's Senate delegation urging them to vote to approve the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This advocacy builds on the NEC Trade Working Group's support for the new trade deal, which makes much-needed updates to NAFTA, over the past year. In the letter, the Council stressed the important trade relationships with Canada and Mexico, which support over 600,000 jobs in New England. On January 16, the Senate voted 89-10 to approve the agreement. This follows the House's passage of legislation to implement the deal in December, and President Trump signed the bill on January
