WORSHIP WITHOUT MUSIC?
By Jeff Fowler
|
|
The pandemic forced us into isolation. It left us singularly to our own feeble devices when it came to worship. Lost was the community empowered when two or more are gathered in God’s Name. We knew all along that watching someone go through the motions on a computer was not worship, but it had to do. We couldn’t go there. Too much was at stake.
Was it St Augustine who said, “Those who sing, pray twice”? Something happens when everyone in the room on a Sunday morning sings. You have to be there fully engaged to experience the power and majesty of hearts and souls recklessly united in singing music and poetry artfully crafted expressly for such an occasion. Momentary glimpses of Glory unexpectedly delight and are gone. They fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.
Music is the pulse of worship. It brings worship to its ultimate plane. Music transports the ordinary to the extraordinary, the defined to the indefinable, the what you can see to the what you cannot. It is the revealer of truths unconsidered.
It’s the road to Glory. How can we keep from singing?

If you are familiar with the musical Godspell, you may have heard a song by the name of Day by Day. The words were taken from a prayer written in the 1200s by St. Richard and are as relevant today as they were then. This small booklet, that comes out every three months, reminds us to speak to God on a daily basis.
These are available at both churches and the one for August, September, and October recently arrived. On each day of the three-month cycle the text includes a scripture quote, a list of the lectionary passages for that day, a reflection, a place in the world to include in your daily prayers, and a short suggestion for "Moving Forward" into your day or week. It is a discipline that many use regularly.
So stop by a table and pick up a copy.
In the words of St. Richard, "Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day."
Amen

"Never come to church empty-handed" has always been a mantra for us, and now that in-person services are back in full swing, it it time to live up to that again. Please bring non-perishable foodstuffs with you when you come to either church. All donations will be given to the new Highland Food Pantry. Items most needed include cereal, canned meat, salad dressing, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, and soup. If you are interested in making food deliveries on Tuesday afternoon, please contact Pam Faber.

Service Moving Indoors at SMC in August
The Rector and Wardens have decided to move the 10:30 am service at St. Martin's Church indoors beginning on August 1st. This decision was taken to be more hospitable to substitute organists and supply priests assisting us during Emily's and Veronika's vacations. We also felt that due to rising temperatures later in the summer, indoors with air-conditioning would be more comfortable for parishioners. We are enjoying outdoor worship in the shade of the Sycamore tree for one more week (unless it rains). Mask wearing is optional indoors for those who are vaccinated.
