Celebrate Literacy Week Final Notes
During Celebrate Literacy Week, the American Library Association announced its Youth Media Awards. These awards for best books cover the spectrum from the well-known Newbery and Caldecott Award to the Schneider Family Award, a lesser known but highly impactful award. The Schneider Family Book Award honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.

Our very own media specialist, Sharon Powers, was part of the national committee which selected the winners. Ms. Powers was interviewed by a local channel WKMG for their segment “Getting Results in our Schools”, along with Mrs. Kellee Moye, the media specialist at Hunter’s Creek Middle who was also part of the committee.

Ms. Powers, LNMS Media Specialist (bottom picture), and Mrs. Moye, Hunter's Creek Middle Media Specialist, were interviewed by WKMG News 6.
During Celebrate Literacy week, our faculty and staff shared what they are reading, or reading to their family members, or reading while their pets listened!
Congratulations to the winners of the bookmark contest! Students Desiree Garcia (8th) - Wormin thru a Good Book - and Valerie Osne (6th) - Hamilton themed design -  drew beautiful bookmarks and were chosen as the winners of this year’s contest. The students will receive prizes this upcoming week.

LNMS Wins Again!
And this time the winners are our parents! The January OCPS Parent Academy was so well attended by Knight parents...that we won the trophy (right) for most parent attendance at the event!

Thank you to all parents who logged on virtually to learn and actively participate in your student’s educational opportunities. While we are focusing on YOU- parents- please make sure you have completed the Parent Survey. We need your input to make LNMS even better!

The link can be found here and on the LNMS website on the rotating banner with the OCPS Family Survey image.
We Need You!
Welcome to the Kingdom!
LNMS welcomes two new teachers to the fold. Mr. Xavier Lopez will be teaching 6th grade social studies and Ms. Peyton Satterfield will join the 6th grade ELA team. Welcome!
Student of the Week Spotlight - Sofia Chardon
Sofia Chardon, currently part of Lake Nona’s girls volleyball team, now wants to reach further and join the basketball team as well. Outside of school, Sofia also plays tennis. Her favorite school subject is science.

With this new pandemic around, Sofia seems to not have as many concerns as she did before ... "the longer that you're here in the school you start to get used to everything and Covid doesn't bother you as much.” In her spare time, Sofia keeps busy in a variety of ways which include music, singing, studying, sports, cooking, gaming, baking and more!
Teacher of the Week Spotlight - Ms. Carson Summers
Ms. Summers, our 6th grade ELA teacher, a proud graduate of UCF, moved into Orlando at the age of 17 all by herself. Her experience was really scary considering that she had to live on her own “but I managed to do it! If I could do that I could do anything.” Ms. Summers enjoys video games such as Dungeons and Dragons with her friends, and other games too. She also loves to take nice cross-country road trips with family and she is always amazed by the things she sees on the journey including landmarks and beautiful historical sights.

For six years, Ms. Summers has been teaching ELA. Her favorite thing to hear from students is “What can I do to get my grade up?” To this question she will always reply “turn in your work and try things again if you had a hard time the first time!” She always pushes her students to do their very best and gets very excited to celebrate their accomplishments and the things they are proud of. This doesn't just apply to her students, but to everyone!
Volleyball Intramurals Update
Tuesday we will host our championship volleyball game and our all-stars vs coaches game right after school. Congratulations to Team Blockbusters and Team Incrediballs. Best of luck to both teams on Tuesday. Thank you to all of our volleyball participants, and we look forward to soccer intramurals which begin this week.
Students have enjoyed taking part in volleyball and competition is strong here in the Kingdom!

Monday's Motivational Moment
Many of our Knights and their families probably watched Super Bowl LV on Sunday. The winning team is awarded the Lombardi trophy named for Coach Vince Lombardi. In 1971, the Super Bowl trophy given to the Super Bowl champs was renamed in his honor -- partly because Coach Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers dominated the first two showdowns between the National Football League and the upstart American Football League.

Lombardi’s career coaching record of 105-35-6, including playoffs, gave him the best winning percentage -- .740 -- in NFL history. He never had a losing season despite taking over the also-ran Packers, and then the Washington Redskins for one season before his death. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971, and ESPN named him No. 1 among all sports coaches in the 20th century!

There are a few life lessons that might benefit our Knights from Coach Lombardi:

1) Lombardi stressed personal best efforts. "To be successful in life demands that you make a personal commitment to excellence and to victory. Victory might be pursued and wooed with every fiber of our body, with every bit of our might and all our effort. And each week, there is a new encounter; each day, there is a new challenge. You must always give it your best."

2) You must have a positive mindset and focus to succeed with your goals. Lombardi said, “Success demands singleness of purpose. … Once you have established the goals you want and the price you’re willing to pay for success, you can ignore the minor hurts, the opponents’ pressure and temporary failures.”

3) Finally, Coach Lombardi has often been misquoted. "I have been quoted as saying, 'Winning is the only thing.' That's a little out of context. What I said is that 'winning is not everything -- but making the effort to win is.' "

Have a great week Knights!
