SEASON OF GRATITUDE

We can't say it often enough:
thank you! It's been a tough year for everyone, and we've been inspired by the countless acts of kindness and generosity throughout our community.

The needs continue to be great, but thanks to the generosity of our donors, we will weather the storm together.
THE BATTLE CONTINUES

During the pandemic, Providence caregivers have served as both caregiver and surrogate family member during visitor restrictions.

We'd like to share a first-hand account from a nurse at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center:

"My first COVID-19 patient was a woman in her late 80s. No families were allowed to visit. My grandpa died last year and I couldn't imagine not having been at his side when he passed. The patient told me what she dreamed of as a child. She asked me about my family. Her family said goodnight on the iPad, but the rest of the time she had me and the other nurses who stepped in during breaks. We don't want anyone to die alone at Sacred Heart.

"Literally a minute before she passed, she looked at me and said: 'I'll say hi to your Papa for you.' I will never forget this patient. I will never forget this experience. It taught me that we are here to give 100 percent of our hearts to our patients."

Your gift to the foundation's COVID-19 Response Fund will help provide the needed tools to keep up the fight, including funding to deploy vaccines, continued research, PPE, bereavement training and behavioral health support.

Thanks to a generous donation from the O'Brien/Kennedy families, your gift will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $25,000.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT - Mark & Judy Newbold

Judy & Mark Newbold, center, with their three children, daughter and sons-in-law, and five grandchildren.
The gift of time. That's what many parents yearn for after suffering the devastating loss of a baby.

Time to form a bond, experience some closure, and even develop cherished memories. It's something that Judy Newbold didn't have when she lost her newborn, Jennifer, to a serious birth defect in 1985. "It was a different time," recalls Judy. "I was with her for about 10 minutes and they took her away." She marvels at the improvements exactly 32 years later, when her grandson, Ezra James, was stillborn. "Our son and his wife were so well cared for and supported," she said. "They were able to spend two days with Ezra, which was a really precious time."

The Forget-Me-Not Program offers compassionate support to grieving families after the loss of a newborn. Judy, Mark and family were so impressed with the program that they recently made a generous donation to PHC Foundation for a CuddleCot. The CuddleCot is a refrigerated baby bed that helps preserve the body of a deceased newborn, allowing families a chance to be with their loved one a little longer. "It makes it possible for them to slow down and say goodbye," said Judy. "We didn't really have that opportunity, so it meant a lot to us to know that other parents would be able to have that gift."

BOOK YOUR VIRTUAL SANTA VISIT AND
SUPPORT SACRED HEART CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

Thanks to COVID-19 restrictions, visits to St. Nick are going to look a little different this year. Fortunately, the North Pole has great wi-fi! From Dec. 4 to 24, the child in your life can share his or her wish list with Santa via Facetime, while supporting Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.

For a $50 suggested donation to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, your little one can spend 15 minutes on a live FaceTime call direct to the North Pole, all from the comfort and safety of your home. Funds raised stay local to support programs that save and improve the lives of ill and injured children.

Book your visit and make your donation here. For more information, contact Mary Hollingsworth at 509-220-8034 or [email protected]. Special thanks to Santa's elves, Paul and Mary Charbonneau, for bringing the magic of the holidays to children in our community, even in the midst of a pandemic.
KIDS AT HEART ADJUSTS TO MAKE A BIGGER IMPACT

For 15 years, we've gathered each February to raise vital funds to ensure that Spokane children can receive world-class health care close to home. And we've had a lot of fun doing it!

Because we can't safely hold a lunch in 2021, we're launching the Kids at Heart Giving Circle, a monthly giving program that enables you to support kids at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital year-round.

We're counting on everyone who's ever been a Kid at Heart to be a cheerleader and advocate for our patients! Learn more and find out how you can still receive the coveted Kids at Heart coffee mug!
LEAVE A LEGACY -- YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN

While your retirement plan may be a great source of income, it might not be the best gift you can leave your loved ones.

Without careful planning, estate and income taxes can consume as much as 75 percent of these funds, leaving little for your heirs.

By gifting your retirement plan to a cause you care about, your heirs won't be taxed, your estate will receive a tax deduction and 100 percent of the donation can be used to support the organization. Plus, if you are 72 or older you can begin making distributions from your IRA during your lifetime and these annual gifts can satisfy the required minimal distribution.

For more information about how you can leave a legacy through your retirement account or other planned giving methods, visit phcflegacy.org or contact Emily Moser at [email protected].
