THIS SATURDAY

9:30am

A one-hour, peaceful chanted service, mostly in Hebrew, with a focus on the "greatest hits" of Shabbat Shacharit services, a great way to get to know the service and start your day. This week the service is led by Dr. Bruce Chalmer.

10:30am

Torah study with bagels/donuts and coffee will begin at 10:30am and go until Noonish.  Our Torah  Study is a vibrant exchange of ideas about the we ekly Torah portion, bringing both traditional commentary and recent scholarship to bear on the text.  It is a lively salon style, participatory Torah study where all are welcome, and no background or Hebrew is needed. This week will be led by Dr. Bruce Chalmer.

WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTIONS :
 WE NEED YOUR VOTE!

THE WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS (WZC) IS ONE OF THE FEW REPRESENTATIVE GLOBAL DEMOCRATIC BODIES OF THE WORLD'S JEWISH PEOPLE.   The Reform Movement has become one of the key parties that make up this voting body.

The 38th World Zionist Congress is scheduled to meet in Jerusalem from October 20-23, 2020; the elections will determine the size of the various delegations to the Congress and are scheduled to be held from January 21 to March 11, 2020 (MLK Day to  Purim ).  PARTICIPATING IN THE WZC ELECTIONS IS THE ONLY WAY NORTH AMERICAN JEWS CAN DEMOCRATICALLY INFLUENCE ISSUES AND FUNDING IN ISRAEL.
SAVE THE DATE: TU B'SHEVAT SEDER
Feb 9th, 6pm-8pm

Together with participants from our Introduction to Judaism class, we will celebrate the holiday of Tu B'Shevat, Judaism's original "Earth Day", the new year for trees.   We will build on a ritual created in Tzfat, Israel in the 1500's by Jews escaping the Spanish Expulsion, and carrying their mystical and kabbalistic insights with them.   We will reflect on the connections between spirituality, mysticism, and nature.

On January 23rd, after the performance,  Rabbi Jan Salzman of Ru'ach Hamaqom and Rabbi David Edleson of Temple Sinai are doing a "Talk Back" session to lead an audience discussion about some of the issues and complexities raised in the play. Particularly how they view cultural icons whose work they admire but whose personal lives and treatment of women disappoint us.  Come see the play and join in the conversation!

Young Families
Camping Havdalah
June 27, 2020
Caring for the environment and celebrating the natural world are prime values in Judaism and of course, at Temple Sinai.  What better way to keep those values alive than by gathering with our kids, savoring the beauty of the outdoors, enjoying campfires, stories, singalongs, cookouts, s'mores, swimming, and just being together?  What a special way to end Shabbat and our wonderful year of programs, before we break for the summer.

Teacher Spotlight
Kitah Bet
2nd Grade Teacher, Naomi Diamond

Just like our previous teacher profile, Sophie Dauerman, Morah Nechama, co-teaches Kitah Bet/Grade 2, (with Sophie).  Like Sophie, she too started school here in preK! Morah Nechama grew up in Williston and has one younger brother, Ari. She is a high school senior at CVU and loves ski racing, crossfit, cooking, hiking, and reading.

Some of the things she loves most to teach are the Jewish holidays and the history behind them. She says, "I think they are incredibly important to our Jewish traditions and customs, and [they are] fun to learn about."

When asked about some of her favorite Jewish customs and memories, Morah Nechama tells me, "I love flourless chocolate cake on Passover and apples and honey on Rosh Hashanah. My favorite holiday is Rosh Hashanah because I love reflecting on the past year and starting a new one with family and friends." One of her favorite memories is traveling to Israel with her friends from Camp Judea and hiking Masada at sunrise.

Morah Nechama is super passionate about "kids, Judaism, the outdoors, and I am so excited to be teaching at Religious School this year!"

And we're very excited to have Morah Nechama here at Temple Sinai!
