Principal's Perspective: Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs)
Dear Delone Catholic Families,

Praised be Jesus Christ! I am pleased to announce that our school, along with all the schools in the Diocese of Harrisburg, is implementing Flexible Instructional Days (a.k.a. FIDs), following a ruling by the State of Pennsylvania that now allows schools to use FIDs as part of the academic calendar.  FIDs are to be used when school is closed for inclement weather or similar circumstances. A FID will count as a full instructional school day and, correspondingly, an extra school day will NOT be added to the academic calendar. Please note, however, that the State only permits five school closings as FIDs. More than five FIDs would result in instructional days being added.

At Delone Catholic High School, we will adhere to the following procedure:
  • Announcements will be made indicating that Delone Catholic HS is closed via the ordinary channels (social media, radio, email, etc.)
  • A subsequent email will be sent indicating that we are using a Flexible Instructional Day.
  • Assignments will be communicated and/or made available online through Google classroom or via direct email from the teacher unless teachers have previously provided an assignment by an alternative means.
  • Teachers are expected to be available from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm during the FID to respond to students' questions.
  • Students will have two days upon returning to school to submit completed FID assignments.

As educators we believe that continuity of instruction is important. By the Diocese implementing Flexible Instructional Days, students will not lose momentum in their learning which may be the case when days are added to the end of the calendar year. Flexible Instructional Days will allow students to continue to learn and provide a chance to do so in ways that are creative and engaging. There will not be any additional or surprise assessments as part of this process.

The State gives us great flexibility, but they do mandate that we have a measurement for our attendance for each day, including Flexible Instructional Days. As an educational institution we will abide closely by this expectation. Therefore, if the vast majority of our students do not complete their work as required, we will not be able to count this day as a school calendar day and thus a day will be added to the end of the calendar year.

Any specific questions in regards to FID assignments should be directed to your student's teacher(s). Each teacher's email address can be found on the Plusportals page.

Thank you for your understanding, support, and cooperation! We are excited for this new undertaking and are grateful for your trust and assistance in this matter, as in all things.

Blessings and best wishes to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Richard La Rocca
Principal

Middle States Update: Organizational Capacity Objective
The Excellence by Design Protocol set forth by the Middle States Association requires each school to have at least two Student Performance Objectives and one (optional) Operational  Objective.  These objectives undergo a technical review by members of the Middle States Association to ensure that what we are proposing is appropriately challenging, but also attainable.  Each objective is accompanied by an extensive action plan that specifically states how we as a school intend to achieve our particular objectives. Leading up to our Middle States Visit, we will highlight one of our new objectives each week.  Our Organizational Capacity Objective, which highlights voluntary student involvement in the Spiritual Life of the school is:

By 2026, Delone Catholic High School will demonstrate improvement in student participation in optional spiritual life activities as measured by:
  1. A 2% increase above baseline (for example, if baseline is 2%, increase to 4%) in participation in Thursday lunch-period liturgies
  2. A 2% increase above baseline in Friday Eucharistic Adoration
  3. A 2% increase above baseline in voluntary participation as liturgical ministers at all-school masses
  4. A 2% increase above baseline in participation in optional retreats (except for those at capacity)
  5. The institution of a team/club chaplaincy program, with at least 25% team/club participation in the first year

Financial restraints placed on our Defense Department have made this directive necessary. Options will be explored should we not have the necessary number of students sign up. Please complete this form and send it to the Guidance Office by Monday, Nov. 11 if your student would like to take the test.

If any friends of Delone can provide guidance or contact information to aid the Music Association in its search, please contact president Jon Stiles, stiles518@embarqmail.com, 717-968-0608.

SportsLeader Virtue of the Week
One pillar of the SportsLeader program is a weekly virtue that we incorporate into our athletic practices and throughout our school community. Every week, we will share them here to encourage the students to take the virtue into their homes as well!

This week our virtue theme is FLEXIBILITY the strength to respond to change with ease.  FLEXIBILITY is necessary for everything in life. We need to be flexible with our teammates, with our coaches, and with the ups and the downs of the season that are sure to come.    Choose to be flexible with your teachers this week in school. Adjust to new and different assignments, pop quizzes and new rules. Respond to things you may not necessarily like with a great attitude!
