A Call for (Pathway) Reviewers
Biomolecular pathways are a key tool to put proteomics results into context, and pathway databases are often the first port of call to make sense of long lists of identifications and quantitations. Reactome ( https://reactome.org ) [1] is an open source, open data knowledge base of curated human pathways. While Reactome employs full time curators, we depend critically on voluntary domain experts who provide their time and knowledge to ensure quality and coverage of the pathways annotated in the database. Similar to manuscript reviewers, these essential community contributors are hard to attract, and the Reactome team would like to reach out to the HUPO community to contribute to the extension and validation of Reactome content.  Read full article here...

The Human Proteome Project (HPP)
New Release of neXtProt
The next release of neXtProt is planned for February 10, 2020. The information in the newly released neXtProt is coupled with the updated version of PeptideAtlas and serves a backbone of HUPO HPP research. The release includes:
  • An updated human protein proteome evidence list, based on the 2020 release of PeptideAtlas, released January 24, 2020, and other protein evidence resources.
  • An updated list of uPE1 proteins (protein with strong protein evidence, but without any known function).

For those involved in the HPP, this release of neXtProt and PeptideAtlas must be referred to for planned publications in the HPP Special Issue of Journal of Proteome Research and other journals.

As you may be aware, neXtProt is not funded by any grant agency and so the work required to curate data and maintain neXtProt is provided voluntarily. However, the prospects for maintain neXtProt is grim due to lack of resources. PeptideAtlas is also under financial stress. As both databases are critical for the HPP, we are requesting individuals, teams, and companies using and enjoying these databases make financial donations each year commensurate with their use and relevance to their studies. HUPO recognizes and values these databases and their essential contribution to the HPP and so has set up a Database Donation Page on the HUPO website.
Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the C-HPP Initiative
The 23rd C-HPP Workshop, “FROM CHROMOSOME-CENTRIC PROJECT TO THE HUMAN PROTEOME”, will be held May 15 – 18, 2020. This workshop will commence in Saint Petersburg in the evening of Friday May 15. After an overnight cruise on the river class ship, lectures will be held on board with excursion tours of cultural sites on Valaam Island. The ship will return after the weekend of lectures, and social interactions to Saint Petersburg by 9 am Monday morning to enable same day return home.

This is a workshop and so will feature the C-HPP Chromosome team reports and progress, uPE1 protein characterization updates by the participating chromosome teams, and Missing Protein hunting strategies. In addition, the opening Plenary Speaker will be one of the pioneer’s of the C-HPP, Prof Amos Bairoch, who will also present his latest venture, “Cellosaurus”.
Registration can be done on line at c-hpp2020.ibmc.msk.ru , with payment where applicable at heavily subsidized rates due at the end of March.
The Early Career Researcher Initiative
2020 Early Career Researcher Manuscript Competition
An important goal of the ECR initiative is to promote young scientists and provide more visibility to their scientific work. Five years ago at the annual HUPO World Congress in Vancouver we started a manuscript competition to award the “Proteomics highlight of the year” from an early career researcher. Now, for the HUPO 2020 competition, we are inviting early career researchers to submit their manuscript that has either been published or accepted for publication within the previous year. Three finalists will be invited to present their research at the HUPO 2020 World Congress in Stockholm based on which the “Proteomics highlight of the year” will be selected. To maximize visibility, all finalists will be celebrated at the congress closing ceremony and on the HUPO website.

We encourage all early career researchers (postdoctoral fellows, young clinicians and junior faculty members) to submit their application by March 27, 2020. More information regarding the application process can be found here...
The Early Career Researcher Mentoring Day at HUPO 2020
ECR Mentoring Day is an international effort coordinated by the ECR initiative to promote career development for students, postdoctoral fellows and young investigators in proteomics through hands-on career exploration and mentors' advices. For HUPO 2020 (October 18), the ECR initiative will have the privilege to organize the event with the Young Proteomics Investigators Club (YPIC) of the European Proteomics Association (EuPA). There is nothing more rewarding than observing the end result of the ECR Mentoring Day: early career researchers and mentors enjoying themselves, connecting with each other and sharing their experiences. Mark your calendars and join us for ECR Mentoring Day and additional activities organized by the ECR initiative and YPIC at HUPO 2020.
Early Career Researcher Initiative New Member
The ECR initiative would like to welcome Andreas Hober as a new member. Andreas will be a key organizer of the annual ECR Mentoring Day. Andreas Hober earned his Master of Science in Engineering in Medical Biotechnology with honors from KTH-Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He started his work within the field of proteomics already during his Bachelor studies working with antibodies and their applications within the Human Protein Atlas project. Andreas is currently pursuing his PhD in the lab of Prof. Mathias Uhlén, now working on mass spectrometry-based read-out combined with affinity reagents for improved sensitivity and method development for precise quantitative targeted proteomics measurements of blood plasma profiles in clinical cohorts.

Upcoming Courses
FEBS Advanced Courses Exploring the Human Proteome with Antibodies,Transcriptomics and Mass Spectrometry 21–26 June 2020 Stockholm, Sweden
The summer school is aimed at graduate students, post-docs, and young independent investigators who want to learn about new techniques to explore the proteins encoded by the human genome. The course will teach state-of-the-art analysis of the human proteins with a focus on antibody-based methods, transcriptomics and mass spectrometry. The course will have several daily lectures by experts in the field and this will be complemented with workshops in which the participants will annotate genes/proteins.  Read more here...
