Simply Christmas at 10 - Simply Amazing!

Ten years ago, Der Nareg decided to start a beautiful tradition at St. Sarkis to mark the Christmas season. Simply Christmas has been a celebration of Christmas hymns and songs, Armenian and non-Armenian, which is eagerly anticipated by parishioners and friends because it gives them a chance to break free from the commercial nature of Christmas and reconnect with the reason for the season - the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But how do you make a great concert greater for the 10
th
anniversary? Not surprisingly, Der Nareg and the Concert Committee found a way to do just that by organizing a feast for the ears and the soul. This year's Simply Christmas, under the auspices of Srpazan Anoushavan, featured tenor extraordinaire, Elie Berberian, the Ariag Choir of Montreal (under the direction of Gohar Manvelyan and Varuzhan Margaryan and with piano accompaniment by Khachatur Ghazaryan), and St. Sarkis' Datevik Children's Choir (under the direction of Mrs. Haigouhi Megerian). Mrs. Arpine Bezdikian, Chairlady of the Simply Christmas Organizing Committee, welcomed all in attendance. Her remarks were followed by Der Nareg who added his thanks and explained how he, Yn. Annie and Mr. Berberian had been discussing concert ideas for years and an especially fitting tribute to Gomidas Vartabed, the Father of Armenian Music, on the 150
th
anniversary of his birth. He thanked all in attendance for their ongoing support for Simply Christmas.
The first part of the concert consisted of a selection of folk songs and hymns composed or transcribed by Gomidas Vartabed. The Ariag Choir, together with Elie Berberian's powerful voice, and the angelic voices of the Datevik Children's Choir, brought to life our liturgical music and beautiful folk songs that, but for Gomidas' tireless conservation efforts, would be forever lost. The second part of the concert of the concert began with Ave Maria, the Catholic prayer immortalized as the hymn honoring the Virgin Mary, and Panis Angelicus, performed by Elie Berberian, a verse from hymn "Sacris solemniis" written by St. Thomas Aquinas in the 13
th
Century. A selection of traditional Christmas songs followed. The attendees were encouraged to sing along and rejoice together. Srpazan Anoushavan and Srpazan Oshagan delivered closing remarks, praising Der Nareg for starting and cultivating this beautiful yearly tradition, as well as Elie Berberian, the Ariag Choir of Montreal and St. Sarkis' Datevik Children's Choir (and respective Choirmasters) and the organizing committee.
A concert lasts two hours, but the preparation by the choirs and Choirmasters last for months leading up to the concert (never mind the long trip to get to New York from Montreal!). The result is a beautiful performance which not only nourishes the soul but brings us all together - many thanks to Elie Berberian, the Ariag Choir, including Choirmasters Gohar Manvelyan and Varuzhan Margaryan, pianist Khachatur Ghazaryan and flutist Michael Zappavigna, and St. Sarkis' Datevik Children's Choir, including Choir Director Haigouhi Megerian. The preparations do not end there - special thanks go to Der Nareg and the organizing committee, under the leadership of Arpine Bezdikian, who spent countless hours tending to every detail relating to the concert (including beautiful handmade wooden nativity scenes from Armenia gifted to the concert sponsors) and the luncheon, making it all look seamless.
In the end, everyone in attendance left the concert feeling joyful and inspired - not by yet another amazing sale, but by the spirit of Christmas, the blessings in our lives and with hope that even during difficult times, music and faith can heal us.

Salt & Light Youth Group and AYF NY Hyortik Chapter and families

On Friday December 13th,
the St. Sarkis Church Salt & Light Youth group and the AYF New York "Hyortik" Junior and Senior Chapters joined together to host their second annual Christmas Party!
Families and friends were accompanied by Dj Harout providing us with great holiday music and with delicious food catered by Ravagh Persian Grill.
It was truly a night to remember. There were multiple generations of friends and family all enjoying their time equally and in the holiday spirit!
This event shows how the Armenian church is the source of the Armenian community and that no matter what organization you are apart in, we can all join collaboratively and spend quality time together as a community.

Salt & Light Youth Group Outreach Program at St. Mary's Children's Hospital

On Saturday, December 14th, 17 kids, along with Der Nareg and 4 facilitators from the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group visited St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Bayside, New York. Prior to this day, the youth group had collected money to purchase gifts for the hospital, and on their visiting day, our kids took over $430 worth of young children's toys with them to donate to the hospital. During their time there, the youth group members worked one on one with the hospitalized children making Christmas crafts and listening to Christmas music in the hospitals activity room. The mood was festive and jolly, and our members did a wonderful job bringing cheer to the sick children. Before we left the hospital, Der Nareg gathered with our members in the Chapel to reflect on their experience. He reminded them to thank God for our everyday blessings, to be weary not to let greed overshadow feelings of gratitude and to pray for the children that they just met.
A few of our youth group members offered to share their experiences in writing for us:
Visiting the St. Mary's children's hospital was a very moving experience that I will never forget. It brought us closer together as a youth group because we saw the conditions of these kids together. It was a very emotional experience as most of the kids were around our age, and their childhoods were taken away from them because of their sicknesses. I can't imagine how hard it must be for them. This experience opened my eyes and made me very grateful for all the blessings God has given me. Blessings as simple as two legs and ten fingers. I enjoyed spending my Saturday morning having fun with these kids and I am really looking forward to visiting the hospital again!

The Salt & Light Youth Group went to St. Mary's Hospital last Saturday. We brought activities and gifts for the children there. Personally, I enjoyed my experience at the hospital because it was humbling and rewarding at the same time. It made me appreciate more things in life, I got to understand how people with certain diseases live, and we made them happy that day. For most of the time at the hospital, I spoke with a kid named Chris. Chris was 15 years old, and he was in a wheel chair. At one point he said he doesn't like sports because he can't walk or do any physical activity. That little sentence tore my heart into pieces because kids take running around and playing for granted, while you have kids like Chris who dream to run, or even walk. Chris and I spent our time together making Christmas crafts to decorate his hospital room.I then met a little 8 year old girl who somehow always managed to keep a smile on her face no matter what she faced. That smile on her face made my day. I would love to come with Salt & Light and experience this again, this trip really changed me.

I think this trip was a great experience and it was very fun. It makes you realize that no matter what, you have to think before you talk to the kids because of how they look or act. They are kids just like the rest of us. The trip also showed us that we should all be grateful for the simple blessings we have in life that we take for granted. The trip was fun and it was good to spend time with the children.

Advent is a season of penitence, anticipation, and preparation. Advent serves as a reminder of the original anticipation of the birth of Christ, as well as the anticipation for Christ's return. Ideally, Advent should be a time of quiet reflection and meditation. In modern times the period leading to Christmas is far from calm, and often is stressful and frenetic. It is a good time to remember to pause and reflect on the proper observation of the birth of our Lord and Savior.
Don't get trapped in the spree of Christmas shopping this Advent season. Set your priorities straight and follow these six paths. Get rich in spirit and prepare a place in your heart for Jesus to be born.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (1.1-14)
Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.' " And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work." And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."
It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
ՊՕՂՈՍ ԱՌԱՔԵԱԼԻ ՆԱՄԱԿԸ ԵԲՐԱՅԵՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ (1.1-14)
Անցեալին բազմաթիւ անգամներ եւ բազմաթիւ կերպերով Աստուած մեր հայրերուն խօսեցաւ մարգարէներուն միջոցաւ, իսկ այս վերջին օրերուն մեզի խօսեցաւ իր Որդիին միջոցաւ: Աստուած զինք ամէն բանի ժառանգորդ կարգեց եւ անոր միջոցաւ էր որ աշխարհը ստեղծեց: Որդին, Հօրը փառքին լոյսը եւ անոր էութեան ճշգրիտ պատկերը, որ իր անձով մեր մեղքերը սրբելէ ետք երկինքի մէջ նստաւ Աստուծոյ՝ Գերագոյն Զօրութեան աջ կողմը:
Անիկա շատ աւելի բարձր է հրեշտակներէն, ինչպէս Աստուծմէ իրեն տրուած անունը ցոյց կու տայ. որովհետեւ ո՞ր մէկ հրեշտակին երբեւիցէ Աստուած ըսաւ. "Դուն իմ որդիս ես, այսօ՛ր քեզ ծնայ": Կամ որո՞ւ ըսաւ. "Ես անոր հայր պիտի ըլլամ եւ անիկա՝ ինծի որդի": Դարձեալ, երբ իր անդրանիկ Որդին աշխարհ կը ղրկէր, ըսաւ. "Աստուծոյ բոլոր հրեշտակները թող պաշտեն զայն":
Աստուած իր հրեշտակներուն մասին խօսած ատեն կ՚ըսէ. "Աստուած իր հրեշտակները ստեղծեց որպէս պատգամաւոր հոգիներ, եւ իր պաշտօնեաները՝ կրակի բոցի պէս":
Մինչդեռ Որդիին կ՚ըսէ. "Քու աթոռդ, ո՛վ Աստուած, յաւիտենական է. արդարութեամբ կ՚իշխես թագաւո-րութեանդ վրայ: Արդարութիւնը կը սիրես եւ անիրաւութիւնը կ՚ատես: Ահա թէ ինչու, ո՛վ Աստուած, քու Աստուածդ ուրախութեան իւղով օծեց քեզ քու ընկերներէդ աւելի":
Դարձեալ, ուրիշ տեղ մը Որդիին կ՚ըսէ. "Դուն, ո՛վ Տէր, սկիզբէն ստեղծեցիր երկիրը, եւ երկինքը քու ձեռագործդ է: Անոնք պիտի կորսուին. բայց դուն կաս եւ կը մնաս: Անոնք հագուստի պէս պիտի մաշին. վերարկուի մը պէս պիտի ծալլես զանոնք եւ հագուստի պէս փոխես: Բայց դուն միշտ նոյնն ես եւ քու տարիներդ վերջ պիտի չունենան":
Բայց հրեշտակներէն որո՞ւն ըսաւ երբեք. "Աջ կողմս նստէ, մինչեւ թշնամիներդ ոտքերուդ տակ դնեմ որպէս պատուանդան": Չէ՞ որ հրեշտակները Աստուծոյ ծառայող հոգիներ են եւ իր կողմէ կը ղրկուին օգնելու համար անոնց՝ որոնք փրկութիւնը պիտի ժառանգեն:
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (19.11-28)
While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' " 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'
"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' " 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them-bring them here and kill them in front of me."
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ ԸՍՏ ՂՈՒԿԱՍԻ (19.11-28)
Մինչ ժողովուրդը անոր ըսածները մտիկ կ՚ընէր, Յիսուս իր խօսքը շարունակեց, եւ Երուսաղէմի մօտեցած ըլլալով ու գիտնալով որ ժողովուրդը կը կարծէ թէ Աստուծոյ արքայութիւնը շուտով պիտի յայտնուի, հետեւեալ առակը պատմեց անոնց.-
"Ազնուական մարդ մը կար, որ հեռաւոր երկիր մը գնաց, որպէսզի թագաւորական իշխանութիւն առնէ եւ իր երկիրը վերադառնայ։ Նախքան մեկնիլը, կանչեց իր տասը ծառաները եւ իւրաքանչիւրին հարիւր արծաթ դահեկան տուաւ եւ ըսաւ. "Շահարկեցէ՛ք այս դրամը մինչեւ վերադարձս"։ Բայց իր քաղաքացիները կ՚ատէին զինք. հետեւաբար պատգամաւոր ղրկեցին իր ետեւէն, ըսելով. "Չենք ուզեր որ ան մեր վրայ թագաւոր դառնայ"։ Երբ որ ազնուականը թագաւորական իշխանութիւնը առաւ եւ վերադարձաւ, անմիջապէս կանչեց իր ծառաները, որոնց դրամ տուած էր, գիտնալու համար թէ ի՛նչ շահած են։ Առաջինը եկաւ եւ ըսաւ. "Տէ՛ր, մէկ տուածիդ դէմ տասը շահեցայ"։ Տէրը ըսաւ. "Ապրիս, բարի ծառայ, քանի այդ փոքրիկ բանին մէջ հաւատարիմ գտնուեցար, ահա քեզ տասը քաղաքներու վրայ կառավարիչ կը նշանակեմ"։ Երկրորդ ծառան ալ եկաւ եւ ըսաւ. "Մէկ տուածիդ դէմ հինգ շահեցայ"։ Տէրը ըսաւ. "Քեզ ալ հինգ քաղաքներու վրայ կառավարիչ կը նշանակեմ"։ Երրորդը եկաւ եւ ըսաւ. "Տէ՛ր, ահաւասիկ տուած դրամդ, զայն պահեցի թաշկինակի մը մէջ ծրարած։ Կը վախնայի քեզմէ, որովհետեւ խիստ մարդ մըն ես։ Կ՚առնես ինչ որ քուկդ չէ եւ կը հնձես ինչ որ չես սերմանած"։ Տէրը անոր ըսաւ. "Չա՛ր ծառայ, քու խօսքովդ քեզ պիտի դատեմ։ Քանի գիտէիր որ կ՚առնեմ ինչ որ իմս չէ եւ կը հնձեմ ինչ որ չեմ սերմանած, ինչո՞ւ ուրեմն դրամս սեղանաւորներուն չտուիր, քանի գիտէիր նաեւ թէ վերադարձիս զայն տոկոսով միասին պիտի պահանջէի"։ Ապա սպասաւորներուն ըսաւ. "Առէ՛ք իրմէ դրամը եւ տարէք տուէք անոր որ տասնապատիկը շահած է"։ Անոնք ըսին. "Տէ՛ր, անիկա արդէն տասնապատիկը ունի"։ "Գիտցէ՛ք, - ըսաւ ան, - ունեցողին աւելիով պիտի տրուի, իսկ չունեցողէն պիտի առնուի նոյնիսկ իր ունեցած ամենէն փոքր բաժինն ալ։ Իսկ իմ թշնամիներս, որոնք չէին ուզեր որ իրենց թագաւոր ըլլամ, հոս բերէք եւ իմ ներկայութեանս սպաննեցէք զանոնք"։
Այս խօսքերը ըսելէ ետք Յիսուս շարունակեց իր ճամբան դէպի Երուսաղէմ։

DAVID THE PROPHET KING; HOLY APOSTLE JAMES
This Monday (December 23) the Armenian Church commemorates David the Prophet King and the Holy Apostle James the Brother of the Lord.
David was the youngest of eight brothers and was brought up to be a shepherd where he learned courage, tenderness, and caring. David became the second King of Israel. In the Bible, the name David belongs solely to him, which indicates the unique place he had as an ancestor and forerunner of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the New Testament there are more than 50 references to David, including the title given to Jesus-Son of David. David was a poet and the author of some of the Psalms.
James the Apostle, called "Brother of the Lord," probably because of his close relationship with Jesus, was granted a special appearance of the Lord after the Resurrection. He is believed to have been a first cousin of the Lord, or as some biblical scholars have suggested, a son of Joseph. After the Resurrection and the Ascension, while the other apostles scattered all over the world, James remained in Jerusalem where he served as the Bishop and became a leading spokesman of the early church.
ST. STEPHEN, FIRST DEACON AND FIRST MARTYR
On Tuesday (December 24) the Armenian Church commemorates St. Stephen, the first deacon and proto-martyr. After Christ's ascension, the apostles went about spreading the Word. It soon became apparent that more people were needed to serve the growing church community. Seven worthy individuals were called upon to serve the Holy Altar and called "deacons" ( sarkavag ). The most noteworthy of the seven was Stephen, described as a "man full of faith and the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5). The Feast of St. Stephen is a popular and important commemoration in the Armenian Church; it is a day to honor all deacons of the church. Stephen became the first martyr of the Church and is therefore called the "proto-martyr." The only information about his life and death is in the Book of Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6:8 and 8:2).
