Faith That Heals

Suddenly, a woman came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, “If I can only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” Jesus turned and seeing her said, “Take heart, daughter, your faith has made you well.”
Matthew 9:20-22, NRSV

There are numerous references to healing, to being made well and to being whole, all through Scripture in the Old and New Testaments. I have always appreciated and taken great hope from the words, “Take heart, your faith has made you well.” I believe I speak for many others when I say that one of the great blessings of a spiritual life is the opportunity for healing.

We may be broken, those of us who have known loss, but if we have been shattered, we can also be restored or, at least, we can be in the process of restoration. When restoration, healing and wholeness happen, that does not necessarily mean an instantaneous miracle (although miracles do happen), but rather a very simple form of healing that restores the mind and spirit so that the body can be restored as well, bringing the heart, mind and body back into peaceful order.

Faith is a process of healing.

Faith gives us a means to peace of mind, a calm center, balanced relationships and a commitment to practice healthy ways of life. Faith is a vital tool in recovery, reconciliation and restoration. This is does not mean, like some say, if you haven’t seen healing, you’re not faithful enough! What it means is that as we lean into Jesus as God’s Son who died for us, as we open our hearts and trust Him, He starts doing the work of healing He wants to do.

It is an ancient therapy many have discovered: “We become what we believe in, and what we believe in… is life, in all of its fullness and wonder.” So, reach out to Jesus–He wants to restore, heal and bring you peace.
