Celebrating National Trails Day this Saturday , June 6 th
Each year, the first Saturday in June marks National Trails Day, an event hosted by the American Hiking Society that encourages people to get involved in preserving and improving access to the many natural trails across the United States.

In celebration, PHLT shares its own trailblazing efforts, and the multitude of ways that you can get involved!

Take the National Trails Day pledge and commit to help in the year 2020.

Many opportunities exist even now -- from engaging in political action or making a donation, to simply cleaning up the paths as you go along. Click the button below to learn more about the opportunities and resources offered by the American Hiking Society.

(By taking the pledge, you'll be entered to win a hiking gear prize package!)
Took the pledge? Now act!
PHLT is eager to embark on its many planned projects when it's safe to do so,

Trailblazing in the Works - Plans for PHLT Preserves
Pomeroy Creekside Trail and Parking Lot, Future Kayak Launch
Plans are in place to complete Phase I of the Pomeroy Preserve project this year!
This will feature a creekside trail that connects to the Stroud Greenway, providing a safe alternative to walking or biking on the heavily-trafficked Hickory Valley Road. For easy access to the preserve, a parking lot will also be constructed this summer.
PHLT looks forward to Phase II of the project, which will include a kayak launch into McMichael Creek!
Overlook Loop at Jonas Mountain
A proposed trail loop added to our Jonas Preserve would allow access to an additional overlook that offers a greater view of the valley below.

Implementation will require the construction of a second bridge over Jonas Creek and general flagging for the layout of the trail. Depending on the availability of volunteer efforts, this project could be completed in the next one to two years.
Upper Paradise Preserve
Future plans for our Upper Paradise Preserve include the addition of several side and loop trails. These trails will open up more areas of the preserve, allowing visitors to explore some of the beautiful waterfalls and other natural features offered on these 511 acres.
PHLT is also working to improve existing connector trails, which will allow easy passage between this
Upper Paradise Preserve and the two adjacent township preserves: Nothstein and Paradise Price Preserves.
Upper Paradise is also included in a proposed route for the regional trail system, which would extend from the ForEvergreen Nature Preserve in Analomink all the way up to the Cresco Train Station.

Marked PHLT Trails are Ready to Tread
Enjoy the trails already established on our PHLT preserves. Fully-constructed, well-marked trails can be found on our Jonas, Kurmes, Glen Run, Learn and Fieldstone Farm Preserves. Just look for the diamond trail sign! Trail maps are available at the trailheads on each of these preserves, and can also be found on our website: www.phlt.org .
A Thank You to Our Litter Crew
As many of us have been rendered with more free time on our hands due to the effects of COVID-19, PHLT preserves and other natural spaces have been seeing a great increase in visitor traffic.

While it is our greatest pleasure to see more people enjoying the outdoors, our friend Mack is here to remind us of the age-old wisdom:

Take only photographs, leave only footprints.
A friendly reminder to leave no litter behind.

Thank you to all who have taken it upon themselves to pick up litter on our preserves. Your effort is greatly appreciated, and it does not go unnoticed!
Attention Detectives: We Have a Nature Mystery!
If you have walked the woods in the spring, you may have come across this little plant with funny-shaped leaves.

It is a relatively common species in our forests.

Can you identify this mystery plant?
Submit your answer to  info@phlt.org

The mystery will be revealed in next month's newsletter!
