Chamber's Preferred Beach Plan gets Approval
Photo: Tom Bolton/Noozhawk
The Chamber applauds the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors for authorizing staff to submit a coastal-development permit to the  California Coastal Commission to protect Goleta Beach Park.

On August 22nd, the board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Das Williams opposed, to allow county personnel to send an application and contact easement holders for financial assistance.

The Chamber's position has been the same for many years -- we support buried rock revetments at Goleta Beach Park because this technique is the best investment for protecting the park and our budget.  Erosion will likely be an ongoing problem and while sand-retention and sand nourishment are also important techniques that can be utilized, the "last backstop" in the form of a rock protection, is vitally important.

The Chamber was represented by Coastal Law Expert, Mark Massara, who spoke on behalf of our organization at the hearing to support the Supervisors approval of the permit. The Chamber's committee, Friends of Goleta Beach, will continue to advocate for alternatives to help protect our park.

Goleta Celebrates 5th Annual Dam Dinner
The Chamber, City and Historical Society came together to put on the 5th Annual Dam Dinner August 19th. Sunny skies and mild temperatures greeted the crowd that turned out for the fifth annual gathering on the dam at  Lake Los Carneros, one of the  City of Goleta's most scenic spots.

A long row of tables was set up to accommodate the many families and friends who joined together to share a meal while enjoying music and the scenic surroundings. The free community event continues to grow and celebrate our unique community.
The Fish Reef Project offers Alternative for Goleta Beach Erosion

As the Friends of Goleta Beach Park committee continues to advocate for the protection of Goleta Beach Park, the organization has partnered with non-profit, Fish Reef Project, to explore how their unique Reef Ball concept can help protect our park.

The Fish Reef Project is the next great ocean  enhancement and restorat ion project which will turn empty seafloor into thriving marine ecosystems. Their system creates a unique home for marine life. Their proposal, to install a reef 300-500 feet offshore and the span of the entire beach will allow the beach to be restored overtime.

Reef Balls provide protection for small marine life to spawn and thrive.
