The City of Abilene's Abilene-Omitama Sister City Board invites you to join in bidding farewell to the
16th Delegation from our Sister City, Omitama Japan.
Sunday, August 6, 2017
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Civic Center
A time of thanksgiving and farewell.
History
The Sister City relationship developed from Japanese interns coming to the Harold Scanlan dairy farm. In 1984 an agreement to form a Sister City relationship between Abilene and Minori, Japan was signed. Since that time adult and student delegations have made annual visits to the each other's towns.
The Sister City Committee identified student exchanges/youth friendships, daily life experience and cultural experience as the main emphasis of the program.

Throwback Thursday
Alamo Saloon
The Alamo Saloon was the grandest drinking and gambling establishment on Texas Street. The Alamo faced West on Cedar Street and became Wild Bill Hickok's headquarters during his tenure as Marshal. It was at this site, in 1871, that
Hickok
engaged in deadly fire with gambler Phil Coe. Unable to see in darkness, Hickok fired both pistols at another figure bursting into the light with gun drawn. Sadly, that figure was his friend and Deputy, Mike Williams.

I Like Ike - The Presidential Election of 1952 with Author John Robert Greene, Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation Speaker Series
Friday, August 4 | 12:00 p.m. | Visitors Center Auditorium
In the first book to analyze the 1952 election in its entirety, political historian John Robert Greene draws in depth from the Eisenhower, Stevenson, Taft and Nixon papers. Greene traces how Richard Nixon's famous "Checkers Speech," Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist campaign, and television as a new medium for news and political commercials each figured in the election in its own way.
"I Like Ike" is a compelling account of how an America fearful of a Communist threat elected a war hero and brought an end to twenty years of Democrat control of the White House. In an era of political ferment, it also makes a timely and persuasive case for the importance of the election of 1952 not only to the Eisenhower Administration, but also to the development of presidential politics well into the future.
A light lunch will be provided at noon. RSVP by email or call 785-263-6771. RSVPs are not required, but appreciated.
Following the program, Greene will be available to sign copies of "I Like Like--The Presidential Election of 1952," available for purchase in the Presidential Gift Shop.

Vintage Base Ball Game
Saturday, August 5 | 1:00 p.m. | Campus Grounds
Baseball history comes alive when the Wichita Bull Stockings of the Cowtown Vintage Base Ball Club return to Ike's hometown to challenge the Abilene Iron Cutters. Donning uniforms from the 1860s, the game is played using base ball rules from the Victorian era, which are quite different from today's game. For instance, outfielders can catch the ball on one bounce for an out and base stealing and sliding are prohibited. Crowd participation is highly encouraged and often impacts the rulings on the field. Bring your lawn chairs and sunscreen to this free public event, and plan to taste some chili from the CASI cook-off event mentioned above.
