Final Fall Special Events - Children's Garden
Margo Whitcomb, Faith Development Assistant

Sunday, October 11, 10-11 a.m. - Families with children are especially invited to gather outdoors in the Memorial Garden for Family Chapel much like those we had in the Community Room on first Sundays in the past. Children will help Erika lead this short outdoor worship, centered on the October theme of Deep Listening, followed by a 5-senses scavenger hunt, noodle tag and art making. Family Chapel Register Here

Sunday, October 18, 2-4 p.m. - The Youth Group invites younger kids and youth to a Fall Festival with lawn games and pumpkin painting/decorating on our beautiful Meeting House grounds. The pumpkins we produce will be delivered to FUUSB members and friends who have been isolated in these times. Goody bags with a little Halloween candy mixed in, to take home! Fall Festival Register Here

Registration is encouraged and very helpful for our planning. Same-day registrants will be accommodated as space allows. Group size will be limited to 25. Masks and safe social distancing required. On the day of the event be sure to review and affirm our Covid Safety Checklist.

"Staying Connected" This Sunday
Sarah Russell, Membership Team Co-Chair

On Sunday, October 11 at 12 p.m. the Membership Team will be holding a virtual "Staying Connected" gathering. "Staying Connected" is primarily intended for "newish" folks to get acquainted and learn a bit more about First UU Society. It is very informal; we simply go around the "room" introducing ourselves, collecting and answering questions. We warmly invite you to join us via Zoom.

Here is the Zoom link: bit.ly/3097Lti
Meeting ID: 832 9657 5946, passcode: 301277
Audio only: call 1-646-558-8656

We look forward to seeing you!

MAG Meeting - October 13
MAG is a group of leaders of the First UU Society. For purposes of this group, we define a leader as anyone who leads or chairs a committee, team, or any other group at the Society. This group meets quarterly and has generally had a purpose of leadership development. This is also often a place where the Society makes announcements about upcoming events, changes, initiatives, etc.

Our first gathering of the 2020/2021 year will be on Tuesday, October 13, 5:30-7 p.m.

This year we have decided that our motto is going to be:  Less Agenda...More Joy, Replenishing, & Conversation!! Yes, we will still have important information to pass on, but we promise to allow space in the agenda to allow for meaningful conversation and sharing. This meeting is going to include some fun with Zoom Polls! Your input is truly important so please come if you can! There is an RSVP on the Realm Event for this meeting; please let us know if you're planning to attend!

Zoom Link: bit.ly/33SEhRN (This will be the same link for all MAG meetings.)

Please arrive on time and feel free to snack or eat dinner while we are meeting. We are looking forward to gathering with you all.

African American History Walking Tour
Linda Cooper, Racial Justice Team

Your Racial Justice Team brings you a walking tour:
African American History at Lakeview Cemetery - October 17, 1:30-3 p.m.

This tour acquaints you with some of the African descended people in Lakeview Cemetery. While we explore this little-known part of Burlington's long history, you meet barbers, housekeepers, soldiers, market owners and others to reveal a small but vibrant black community in the Queen City during the 19th and 20th centuries. Presented by Elise Guyette, author of Discovering Black Vermont: African American Farmers in Hinesburg, 1790-1890. Meet at the entrance to Lakeview Cemetery. Also called Burlington City Cemetery, 455 North Avenue, Burlington, VT.

Sign up with Linda Cooper, [email protected] or 922-7554. Maximum of 20 people on the tour with a minimum age of 14. Plan to wear a facial mask and be ready to keep a 6 foot distance from others. There is no set fee but we will pass a hat to subsidize the funds the Society is providing. We know you will learn and enjoy this walk!

Reminder: First UU Society Autumn Auction
If you missed today's Realm email about the UU Fall Auction, please click here for all the details!

This year the auction will operate a bit differently (all online), but will hopefully still feature opportunities to bring us together in many ways. We are expanding the auction categories to include more food, art, and gift items or baskets in addition to services and gatheringsAnd while some items should be modified from their usual format to better accommodate safety concerns, we ask everyone to think creatively about how to offer something that will bring us together as friends and members of a supportive community.

To add an item to the auction, please return an auction donation form to the auction committee at
[email protected]. Or you can simply send an email to the committee with the information requested on the form.

You can go to auctria.com/auction/FUUSBtogether to register as a bidder and see items that are available for bidding. Keep coming back as the list will grow until the bidding starts on Saturday, November 7. Bidding will be open until Sunday, November 22.

WREATHS: We will also incorporate the annual Wreath Sale into the auction this year. Wreaths will be a fixed price item and we should have enough for everyone who wishes to purchase a wreath. Simply sign up as a bidder on the auction website to purchase a wreath.

And if you have any questions, please contact anyone on the auction committee at [email protected]. The committee consists of: Dan House, Nina Harrington, Rodney Lowe, Sarah Forbes, and Christina Fulton.

Thank you all for your donations and your bids and your wonderful spirit of community.

Natural Materials for Wreaths Needed!
Sarah Forbes

The wreath makers are really in need of new natural materials to use for wreath decorating this year. When cleaning up your garden, driving your local road, or hiking, please consider (appropriately) gathering any interesting pods, bark, cones, grasses, dusty miller, acorns, other nuts, birch bark, fern or lily seed heads, red dogwood, etc. Connect to arrange pick-up. Many thanks!
Sarah Forbes, 578-6119, [email protected]

To get your wreath this year you will need to sign up via this year's UU Auction. Wreaths will be a fixed price as usual. You won't want to miss getting a beautiful, custom-decorated, premium quality wreath for your home. Wreaths are handmade in the Northeast Kingdom on a family farm, measure about 24" across and are beautifully decorated by many talented volunteer UUs!

It is with sadness that we share the news that First UU Society member Daniel Moerdyk passed away on September 21. We hold Dan's family in our hearts. A private graveside service was held by the family.
