“Beloved Community on the Horizon”

Philosopher and theologian Josiah Royce created the term “Beloved Community” at the beginning of the 20th Century to refer to the ideal community of all people dedicated to loyalty, truth, and reality. In the mid-20th Century, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. popularized and specified the term to refer to mean a community not ravaged by the three evils of racism, poverty, and militarism.

How does our understanding of the Beloved Community build on these theological foundations? When you imagine a community unharmed by racism, poverty, and militarism, what does it feel like? What is the bridge between here and that horizon?

“Starr King School for Ministry,” presented by Jessica Neno Cloud, Vice President for Advancement of Starr King School for the Ministry.

“Where do ministers come from? It’s a question most congregants don’t ask until perhaps they serve on a search committee. Starr King School for the Ministry is one of our two Unitarian Universalist identity schools. Their Vice President for Advancement, Jessica Cloud, will discuss the role of “identity schools” and how congregational support matters to these vital institutions and the future religious leaders of our faith movement. MICAH CELEBRATION ON FEBRUARY 11. "We Rise: Building a Healthy Community – A Black History Celebration." HEART WIDE OPEN: SOULFOLK & SONG WITH LEA. Join us Saturday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. for a heartwarming, interactive afternoon of “songversation” with award-winning singer-songwriter Lea Morris (aka. this is LEA) as she shares eclectic and inspiring music in her signature style. All ages welcome. Proceeds will support the First Church Music Ministry. Suggested donation is $10/individual or $20/household; however, all are welcome regardless of ability to pay. GUEST HOUSE MEAL ON FEBRUARY 20. First Church will be serving dinner to 70 men on February 20th and we need food donations. The menu is jerk chicken, steamed vegetables, oven roasted potatoes, green salad, and ice cream bars. We need 7 donations of 10 servings for each item. They also welcome soft drinks, salad dressing, and paper napkins. GETTING YOUR DUCKS IN ORDER: END-OF-LIFE PLANNING. Join us on Tuesday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. as the Heritage Society welcomes attorney Elizabeth Ruthmansdorfer for the first night of a two-part program. Elizabeth will outline the steps you should take now to identify and

line up those ducks and provide for your family’s security. She will discuss wills and probate, medical and financial powers of attorney, trusts, including special needs trusts, and Title 19/Medicaid planning. REV. DENA ON WINTER LEAVE. Our Associate Minister Rev. Dena is on her annual winter leave February 6 - March 7, 2021. She enjoys a combination of vacation and study time. GET READY FOR MYSTERY FRIENDS! Adults and children age 5 and up are invited to sign up for Mystery Friends and be matched with a pen pal from a different generation of the church community. Friends will exchange weekly notes in the mail from February 21-March 21, and meet at a virtual party, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. Any adult members and friends of First Church may participate.

IT'S BUDGET TIME! Leaders of teams, ministries, and groups that have church budgets, check your email dated January 25 for info from Director of Administration Jean Johnson about how to submit your budget request for 2021-22. Requests are due February 28. COVID CANDLE ON SUNDAYS. Because of the ways our lives are touched by loss and grief during the global pandemic, we have a simple ritual during Sunday worship called the “COVID Candle” when it is needed. During this unique time, when people cannot gather with their family and community to mourn, we offer to light the COVID Candle for any death of a loved one of one of our members. If you have had a loved one die from COVID-19, or any other cause of death, and would like the COVID Candle lit in their honor during Sunday worship, please contact one of the Ministers.
