Two NYMC faculty members helped discover a gene mutation that helps protects against obesity in a study that analyzed at the genetic data of 645,000 people. Michal Laniado Schwartzman, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, and Victor Garcia, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacology, collaborated with scientists at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, to conduct the research, which found that people who have at least one inactive copy of the GPR75 gene have lower BMI and weigh about 12 pounds less and face a 54 percent lower risk of obesity than those without the mutation.
