 I hope this week's edition finds your February off to an excellent start so far. February is celebrated as Black History Month across the United States and also brings with it a four-day school week later this month due to the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 17th.
Further below you will find all the information needed to get involved in our tutoring opportunities available on a variety of days on both campuses. We just saw how fast January blew by, so I ask any of our Grenadiers needing extra help to start participating this week. Any student with less than a 2.0 GPA is strongly encouraged to attend.
As a reminder to our school community, our monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) is Thursday, February 13th. If you have a student at Colonial, you are most welcome to attend.

Important Events and Reminders
|
Kudos to our Grenadiers who are making it to class on time! In the 1st week of January, we had a total of
1,651 just tardies. This past week, we have had a total of
791 tardies, including our "late arrival students." As you can see, it really is possible to get to class within 6 minutes. The 1 minute reminder helps, while some students are still receiving a discipline consequence: after 5 tardies, a student will be assigned lunch detention. After 7, a student will immediately be assigned to PASS.
Reminder: PTSA and SAC will meet on February 13 in the Media Center on Freshman Campus at 6:00pm.
ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY
~ This year's survey is now online ~
 Colonial High School is engaged in an ongoing continuous improvement process, of which all stakeholders are a part. The school will participate in an online survey until March 13 as one method of reaching all stakeholders.
Surveys are a means to systematically engage all our stakeholders in two-way communication. They provide school leaders and teachers a view into the thinking and perceptions of our stakeholders. Careful analysis of the results enriches understanding of areas of strength and effectiveness as well as those areas that possibly need improvement. The survey results will enable our school leaders to measure stakeholders' attitudes and help target improvement strategies focused on student achievement as well as school and system effectiveness.
Taking the survey also will help stakeholders understand the Cognia Standards for Quality Schools and provide a means for learning about what a parent, student or staff member should be looking for in a high-quality school. The survey is available in Arabic, English, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish. Your cooperation and support in completing the surveys will be greatly appreciated.

Please encourage your student(s) to complete at least 30 minutes a week of free SAT practice at
KhanAcademy.com Khan Academy is an excellent way for students to get specific practice in their SAT area of need.
Research shows that 30 minutes of week of Khan Academy Official SAT practice, helps to improve SAT scores by an average of 100 points. Juniors and seniors who participate in Khan Academy and register with College Board Opportunity Scholarship (
cb.org/opportunity) make themselves eligible for scholarships, incentives, and higher SAT scores.

Organization/Club Spotlight

Colonial High FFA
Members of the Orlando Colonial FFA competed in the FL FFA Environmental & Natural Resources State Career Development Event. They won first place!!! Members will be recognized before the 6,000 attendees of the Florida FFA State Convention in June. The team will go in to represent the state of Florida at the National competition as part of the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN this October.

- Siena Gonzalez: State 8th high individual
- Myzell Amaro: State high individual!
- Taj Williams: State 4th high individual
* We would like to congratulate Iverson Alfaro who has been selected as 1 of only 5 state CTE finalists for the US Presidential Scholarship!
On Thursday January 30th, four of our FFA officers went to Tallahassee to participate in the Florida FFA Capitol Day. To advocate for the FFA, agricultural education and CTE programs in the state of Florida. The members met with representatives and discussed their stories in hopes of helping to pass a legislative funding bill benefiting Agriculture Education and Florida FFA. One of the representatives the members talked to and toured the capital with was Representative Rene Plasencia. Rep. Plasencia, also known as Coach P, was a social studies teacher and track coach at Colonial High School!

This past week, CHS celebrated Literacy Week: students and faculty created bookmarks and dressed as their favorite literacy characters!

AP Spanish and Culture with Ms. Ordaz
Ms. Ordaz' AP Spanish Language and Culture classes are close reading "No oyes ladrar los perros," a tragic story about a boy and his father on a treacherous journey to cross the border. In small groups, students analyzed the father/son relationship and discussed their inferences about this text.

Freshmen Academic Assembly
The guidance and administrative team met with freshman students during an academic assembly this past week. The purpose of this meeting was to draw student attention to the critical elements of success: earning passing grades to contribute to a healthy GPA, earning credits, and taking and passing the FSA ELA and the Algebra 1 EOC. Students had an opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Smith, guidance counselor, and Mr. Silva, our Parent Engagement Coordinator.

Grenadier Performing Arts

Thursday night, the Advanced Theatre course performed their original devised work entitled, "Threads, Buttons, and Labels" at the Orlando Rep. This was a culmination of work since September, where students collaborated on putting together a new play that raised questions about clothing and labels, and how they are used to try and define us.

Girls' Basketball
Our Girls' JV and Varsity Basketball teams dominated against the Cypress Creek Bears this past week! Seniors were celebrated with a special recognition ceremony before the game!

Prom will take place on May 9 from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm.
Get your ticket now before the price increases! Students must be in good academic standing to attend (2.0 GPA or better with no Level 4 referrals). Ticket price includes a full meal with appetizers and desserts!
