“But at the beginning of creation, God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” – Jesus (Mark 10:6-9)

One week from today, my daughter will be on the beach with her husband, yes, her husband, Caleb. I can see it now, Brookelyn and Caleb holding hands, sipping an umbrella drink, and watching the crystal waves lap onto the sandy shore. I will be there too; they won’t see me. In the distance, beneath the glistening waves is the top of a snorkel just making sure everything is going ok. Just kidding Caleb!! Their honeymoon will be a grand time for them to start their lives together in paradise.

But before the honeymoon, in front of God and many witnesses, Caleb and Brookelyn will make promises of love and total devotion to one another and will seal these promises with rings. Marriage was God’s idea wherein two become one. One man and one woman come together and commit to a lifetime of love and faithfulness.

If your marriage survived past the honeymoon, you know life is not always a beach. When two become one, you go through difficult times and joyous times together.

Her health issues become your health issues. His addiction becomes your addiction. His anxiety becomes your anxiety, and her pain becomes your pain. Suddenly, the promise, “In sickness and in health,” becomes very real.

When two become one that means through joyous times too! Her successes become your successes, and his joy becomes your joy. Her celebration is your celebration, and his peace becomes your peace.

What a gift marriage is, created by God from the beginning and blessed by Jesus at the wedding feast. Wedding celebrations would last a week or longer - Whew, as the father of the bride I am thankful it is just one evening! Something terrible happened that was a social embarrassment -- they ran out of wine. Jesus was attending and his mother told him there was nothing but ceremonial water jars and you know the rest of the story. Jesus turned the water into wine. The master of the feast said . . .

“Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” John 2:10

Marriage was God’s idea and He blesses it with His very best.

Brookelyn and Caleb,

May God bless you as you finish preparations for your wedding and the celebration to follow. Always remember when you are together as one, with Jesus as your Savior, you get only the best.

Thanks be to God!

PS: I am a picky dad and I really love Caleb!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
