At Modern Sailing, we live to help sailors realize their sailing dreams - at home in the San Francisco Bay and beyond. Last September, the tropical sailing dreams of 21 sailors and 3 captains came true among the mythical islands of Tahiti. We'll share some of the highlights of their unforgettable adventure.
Did you know the ASA offers a program for armed services veterans to receive a discount on ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing? Ten veterans enjoyed the benefits of this program at Modern Sailing in 2019. In October, MSC and club member Ernest Khirallah teamed up to treat 8 of them to a group sail on
Ry Whitt.
If you're a veteran who would like to learn how to sail, act fast - the program expires on Veterans Day. We'll tell you how to apply.

MSC Sailors' Dreams Realized in French Polynesia
"It's everything you imagine it is and then some."
- Captain Bill Moreland
This September, the reality of the legendary islands of Tahiti surpassed the imaginations of MSC Global Destinations sailors and captains. Our crew enjoyed the kind of perfect sailing that we all dream of, and expeditions ashore revealed each island's unique charm and idyllic tropical beauty.
|
|
Driven by refreshing breezes over vivid cobalt and mostly mellow seas, our flotilla of 4 yachts and crew of 24 sailed sublime open ocean passages between the islands of Raiatea, Bora Bora, Taha'a, and Huahine.
|
|
Our sailors celebrated their successful passages at anchor with après-passage parties, dinner aboard, or by sampling the local flavors ashore. All meals aboard and ashore were described as "exemplary" and "divine" and the seafood was delishly fresh.
At many locations, snorkelers discovered coral reefs rich with color and life. On layover day, sailors recreated and explored Huahine in their own ways. Some joined tours of vanilla plantations or pearl farms while others hiked, swam, or relaxed.
|
|
Lounging on decks and trampolines, our crew watched glorious sunsets melt into dazzling starscapes. With sunset around 6:00 every evening, there was plenty of time for contemplative stargazing before retiring to berths for the night.
Tahiti was every sailor's dream come true, yet the fair sailing, lush and vibrant tropical beauty, fresh and delicious fare, the camaraderie of friends, sunrises, sunsets, and stargazing inspired and invited our crew to keep on dreaming, and for some, to dream even bigger.
Where will Modern Sailing go next? Our
Caribbean adventure in January 2020 is currently sold out, but you are invited to join the waitlist. Coming in September 2020, our next exciting adventure has been chosen by popular demand and will be announced November 21. Stay tuned!

Veterans Honored with Sailing at MSC
Last month, MSC hosted a sail aboard
Ry Whitt
for 8 of our veterans served by the ASA Veterans Sailing Education Program at Modern Sailing. The sail was organized and skippered by club member Ernest Khirallah and the boat use was donated by Modern Sailing.
The ASA Veterans Sailing Education Program provides a $75 discount for eligible veterans on the ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing course. Last year when the program launched, Ernest offered to match the discount for the first 10 veterans who signed up. The eight pictured (plus two who were unable to join the sail) received a $150 discount off of ASA 101.
Club member Merlin Watson wrote of the experience, "We had a great day sailing, telling war stories, fond memories, and sharing future plans for sailing. ...[A] special thank you to Ernie Khirallah and to Modern Sailing School for their kind generosity."
Veterans have earned our respect and gratitude for their service to our nation. We thank you!
The ASA program is due to expire on Veterans Day 2019. Modern Sailing recently contacted the ASA to find out if it will be renewed for another year. The ASA responded, "We have received so many positive comments about it. Stay tuned."
We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you are a veteran and would like to learn to sail, there's still time to apply to receive a $75 discount off of ASA 101. You have only until Monday, November 11 - don't wait!
