New Edition of LUSUS to Highlight Portuguese Culture
Part of the PALCUS mission is to advance and promote the Portuguese culture, and so in honor of Dia de Portugal, we are kicking off a new monthly newsletter that will highlight the individuals and organizations who are helping to maintain Portuguese traditions, showcasing modern culture and demonstrating that the Portuguese are excelling in multiple fields. We welcome and encourage our members to suggest people and organizations to be featured in this newsletter, as we want this initiative to be driven by the community. Featured Folklore Group - Rancho Folclórico Aldeias de Portugal: Farmingville, NY
"We are a Portuguese folklore dance group based in Farmingville, NY. We have been dancing and performing in the Tri-State area for 20 years."

Traditions / Customs - Festival of Saint Anthony
"Saint Anthony of Padua (Portuguese : Santo António de Lisboa), born Fernando Martins de Bulhões (1195 - 13 June 1231), also known as Anthony of Lisbon, was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. He was born and raised by a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in Padua, Italy. Noted by his contemporaries for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most-quickly canonized saints in church history. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church on 16 January 1946. He is also the Patron Saint of lost things."
Every June, a two-day festival is held as well as a Sunday morning procession at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford, CT.

Featured Fado Singer - Nathalie Pires
"Almost like by the mystery of its origins, fado comes into little Nathalie's life, who still cannot explain if fado elected her, or was that thirteen year old girl who elected fado. What is perfectly clear is that from the time she was accompanied by a Portuguese guitar for the first time, fado took over her voice and her senses, a fado-singer was born, and immediately began to be noticed by the bright tone of her voice, stage presence, and the feelings transmitted every time she sang the beautiful songs of traditional fado, quickly becoming a serious case of popularity among the Portuguese communities in the United States of America."

Featured Artist - Nathan Oliveira
"Born in Oakland, California, Nathan Oliveira earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in fine art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1952. He also studied during the summer of 1950 with Max Beckmann at Mills College in Oakland. His early works are mainly expressive in form, color, and line. In 1956 Oliveira began teaching at his alma mater and also at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. One year later he received a Louis Comfort Tiffany grant for lithography and began more in-depth work in prints. In 1958 he was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship, which enabled him to travel to Europe. As artist in residence at the University of Louisville from 1961 to 1962, Oliveira had a solo exhibition at the university's Krannert Museum."

Emeril John Lagassé III
"Chef Emeril Lagasse's passion for food was ignited as a young boy growing up in the small town of Fall River, Massachusetts, where he spent time in the kitchen with his mother, Hilda. As a teenager, he worked at a Portuguese bakery where he mastered the art of bread and pastry baking. Upon high school graduation, Lagasse turned down a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music to pursue his dream of becoming a chef. He earned a degree from the respected culinary fortress, Johnson and Wales University, and later received an honorary doctorate degree from the university. Wanting to broaden his culinary horizons, Lagasse then traveled to Paris and Lyon, France, where he honed his skills and learned the art of classic French cuisine. Returning to the United States, Lagasse practiced his art in fine restaurants in New York, Boston and Philadelphia until a job offer from Dick and Ella Brennan lured the young chef to New Orleans, where Lagasse helmed the kitchen for nearly eight years at their legendary restaurant, Commander's Palace."

"I started working for my father's residential construction company at the age of 11 and knew by the age of 14 that I wanted to be an architect. I loved construction and along with a knack for drawing, I was drawn towards the architectural profession. After working on Bio-tech/Pharma design for 7 years, I longed for a return to traditional architecture where I would work on different types of projects. William Starck Architects offered that along with a "family" atmosphere. I have been working with the firm since March of 2013."

"During the years 2000-2003 she attended the Arts Program of the 2nd Group of Liceu Camões (Escola Secundária de Camões) in Lisbon, where she had the first contact with the arts and design.
After this period, she attended the degree in Equipment and Interior Design, of Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies, during the years 2004 to 2008. During this period, she participated in several design competitions."

Featured Fashionista - Anita Da Silva
"Ecole Primaire is the brainchild of Montreal native Anita Da Silva, the daughter of a Portuguese seamstress who loved to overdress her in tulle and ruffles. After receiving a degree in fashion design, she worked in the industry for over 15 years before launching Ecole Primaire. Anita is determined to prove that you can, in fact, wear something denim to the opera."

Featured Poet - Allison Coke
"Allison Adelle Hedge Coke grew up in North Carolina, Texas, Canada, and the Great Plains region. She is of Huron, Metis, French Canadian, Portuguese, English, Irish, Scot, and mixed Southeastern Native heritage, poet, writer, and educator. Though she left school to work in the fields as a child, she later attended North Carolina State University, Estelle Harmon's Actor's Workshop, Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics Summer Writing Program, and earned an AFAW in creative writing from the Institute for American Indian Arts and an MFA from Vermont College. She is the author of the poetry chapbook Year of the Rat (1996); the full-length poetry collections Dog Road Woman (1997), Off-Season City Pipe (2005), Blood Run (2006 UK, 2007 US), Streaming (2014), an illustrated (by Dustin Illetewahke Mater) special edition Burn (2017); and the memoir Rock, Ghost, Willow, Deer (2004, 2014). Streaming comes with a full album recorded in the Rd Klā project period with Kelvyn Bell and Laura Ortman."

Featured Winemaker - Marco Montez
"I began my journey in the world of wine as a kid living in a small village in the Tras-Os-Montes region of Portugal. Every September I would help my family and neighbors with the grape harvest. Wines were made in an artisan manner to be consumed by family and friends. Grape stomping with one's feet was not a romantic or cool way to crush grapes, it was the only way.
Fast forward... now living in the United States, I remained connected to the world of winemaking thanks to my uncle Octavio who had emigrated from Portugal in the early 80s and who has been a home winemaker all his life. Eventually I became more and more intrigued about winemaking. So I took a dive into the world of wine and winemaking. In March of 2007 I was invited by the owners of Running Brook Vineyards to help them with their winemaking. By this time I had already developed a passion for winemaking."

Featured Musician - Bobbie Gentry
"Bobbie Gentry was one of the first female musicians who wrote, produced and even published her own music.
Born in Chickasaw County, she is remembered for her Southern themed narrative songs including her classic recordings Fancy and her debut single Ode To Billie Joe which became a U.S. number one hit and a worldwide sensation. Bobbie released seven albums on Capitol including her defining works Patchwork, The Delta Sweete and Ode to Billie Joe, before her self-imposed retirement. She also had a successful partnership with Glen Campbell with whom she recorded an album of duets."

PALCUS Mission
In order to create a singular voice to advocate for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991 as a non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.
PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under the IRS tax code and incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law and will be acknowledged.
