February City Council Meeting Recap
City Council met in regular session on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at Lakeway City Hall. Here is a recap from that meeting:

CHIEF OF POLICE SWEARING IN:
Mayor Kilgore officially swore in Chief Glen Koen with the Lakeway Police Department (pictured). Chief Koen's family was present at the ceremony, and his wife pinned the Lakeway Police Department badge to his uniform during the ceremony. Chief Koen joined Lakeway in November of 2021 after working as Assistant Police Chief for a community near Seattle. He also served as a SWAT Team commander, overseeing a multi-jurisdictional tactical team serving a population of around 370,000. A native Texan, he also has around two decades of experience serving a variety of law enforcement roles with UT Austin. CLICK HERE to learn more about Chief Koen.

JERRY HIETPAS DAY:
Mayor Kilgore announced in a proclamation at the city council meeting Tuesday that today (Friday, Feb. 25) is 'Jerry Hietpas Day.' Jerry has served on the Lakeway Municipal Utility District (LMUD) Board since being appointed in December 2005. He received the honor and proclamation for his "17 years of service and dedication to our community."

FINANCIAL UPDATE:
City Manager Julie Oakley gave an update on the current state of financials for the City of Lakeway so far this fiscal year, which began on Oct. 1, 2021. She indicated that so far this fiscal year, there is a $206,889 positive variance (more than budgeted) on the revenue side, and a $68,386 positive variance (savings) on the expenditures portion of the budget.

WILDLIFE UPDATE:
Wildlife Advisory Committee Chair Ted Windecker gave an update on the Lakeway deer population. Recent survey data indicated the current herd is healthy and well-fed, and also not growing. Based on the data, the committee recommended to council that no action is needed at this time regarding control of the size of the deer herd, and that the City should continue funding annual white-tail deer surveys for tracking purposes. It was also indicated that even though there appears to be an increase in coyote activity, no action is needed at this time to control that population. However, City Council recommended a better placement of information regarding protecting pets and deterring coyotes from properties on the city website. City Council took no formal action at the meeting. CLICK HERE to learn more about Lakeway's wildlife.

EASTSIDE LANDINGS:
City Council approved (4 to 2) an amendment to the development agreement for Eastside Landings located next to Serene Hills along Flint Rock Road. The amended agreement maintains the majority of conditions of the existing agreement, but does eliminate the requirements for the developer to construct Flint Rock Road and subdivide the northern section into R-1 lots. AVIATION ZONING DISTRICT COMMITTEE:
City Council voted in favor (6-0) of forming an Aviation Zoning District Study Committee. Each of the seven serving committee members would be selected by each member of city council. Volunteers are encouraged to apply online, as a decision on who will be serving on that committee is anticipated the middle of March.
