February can be a dreary grey month, so we have done our best to schedule up-lifting and fun events to raise all of our spirits. Hope you will shake off the winter doldrums by attending our hilarious table reading
I Hate Hamlet
, get jazzed up at our Sunday Salon featuring JazzQ, and mellow out at Songwriters Showcase. The galleries are filled with new and colorful works to inspire us, and, at the end of the month, we will leap into leap year with the Broad Ideas opening reception…always a great party! (There’s still time to register to bring in your artwork, but hurry!! Go to

Each day the daylight hours increase, and already we can see the difference. As the saying goes, it will snow whether we want it to or not, so we might as well enjoy the beauty of the snow while it is here. The gallery is open 1-4 Thursdays through Sundays. Artistic Diversity
Elevating and Celebrating
Regional Artists

Artistic Diversity is everywhere! We put out the call for art to the regional area, and a diverse group of talented artists responded. We now are exhibiting over two hundred works of diverse art from over fifty artists from Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin in our Regional Artists Gallery, the Special Exhibit Gallery and the Artists Circle.
Painters, sculptors, ink and colored pencil drawing artists, wood carvers, fiber artists, collage artists, potters, photographers, glass artists, and digital artists are all represented. Come be inspired, find a treasure to support the artists and enhance your home and life.

My Girls, Students of Janet Checker

Janet Checker is an artist of many different expressions. Classically trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and The American Academy of Art, she worked in weaving and fashion design for many years. Currently she is painting in oil and pastel on canvas.
Janet has been teaching painting and drawing for over twenty years for small group classes or private lesson in the Galena area.
This show will continue to the end of March, so be sure to check it out and encourage their continued studies.

Rehearsals begin
for Community Chorus!
Monday, February 3, 7 pm
|
|
New music has arrived, and we’re ready to start! The first rehearsal of 2020 for the Summit Street Singers community chorus will be at 7 pm on Monday, February 3, in the lower level of the Galena Center for the Arts.
There will be a spring choral concert featuring the
Summit Street Singers and Fevre River Voices
on Thursday, May 7 at the Center.

The choruses are led by Kent Parry, with Susan Lipnick as the accompanist. No audition is necessary to join these groups of regional community members who enjoy singing together and all are welcome to share in the joy that music brings. We will be requesting a donation from chorus members to help pay for the printed music. Bring a friend! Have a notebook for your music, and a pencil, and we will make music together.

When Andrew Rally, successful TV actor, agrees to play the role of Hamlet in a Central Park production, many complications ensue, including the spirit of John Barrymore returning to train him for the role.
The New York Times
described this show as “unapologetically silly and at times hilarious…affectionately amusing about the theatre.”
Join in the fun as our cast of six careens through this script, featuring: Lee Adami, Michael Crawford, Mark Haman, Molly Huerta Hoefflin, Terry Hoefflin, and Nala Kathleen, with narration by Jay Dickerson.

Volunteer Valentine Tea

The Center can only exist because of all of our wonderful volunteers. We would like to invite you to tea to thank all those who have volunteered in the past, and encourage everyone who is considering volunteering in the future. There are so many ways you can help.
|
|
- In the gallery we need volunteers to be a receptionist and process sales of artwork. For gallery openings we need donated appetizers and sweets and food severs during the event.
- For plays, readings, and performances we need greeters, ushers, cookie sellers, and ticket takers.
- People to distribute rack cards and posters for gallery exhibits and performances and envelope stuffers for mass mailings.

|
- For all events we need set-up and clean-up crews.
- For building maintenance we need gardeners, snow removal, handyman skills.
- We need people for planning committees for a myriad of artistic endeavors, such as Chalkfest, Art that Stands Out in its Field—Scarecrows, Small Art—Big Impact, and any new special exhibits and events.
- We welcome your ideas and talents.

Please come to enjoy the camaraderie of art enthusiasts and learn about new opportunities.
And yes, we will have tea and treats too!

Jazz it up at Sunday Salon!

JazzQ
|
JazzQ will perform an eclectic mix of jazz standards, swinging musical theatre tunes and light blues.
The group is led by David Resnick on saxophones, with vocalist Rebecca Lansing, pianist Melanie Paulsen, bassist Andrew Geyssens, and drummer John Garde.
Since forming in the fall of 2018, JazzQ has been performing throughout the Tri-State area and was recently featured in Tabor Winery’s “Music in the Vineyard” series.
The concert is free, but donations are always welcomed.

Songwriters Showcase

Following the unexpected death of his mother, Conrad Merced picked up his guitar after a ten
–
year hiatus and began writing songs for the album “Tender Beats.”
|
|
|
|
This lush collection of songs feature catchy finger-style acoustic guitar backed behind atmospheric, digital textures and drum machines to create a unique blend of ambient electronic-folk.
The Chicago native, and second generation Filipino, brings forth compelling and thoughtful music that flows through the soul with ease and grace.

Tri-state community members interested in history, archaeology, or independent documentary cinema are invited to attend a celebration (150

anniversary of Southern Illinois University) of work produced by noteworthy university faculty and staff.
Events are free for high school and college students. For the public,
a charge of $5 will be donated to the SIU Scholarship Fund.

A Bad Deal: My Vietnam War Story

Unique to this piece is 8mm footage shot on site in Vietnam by James Hamlyn a young U.S. Army private. Both Mr. Hamlyn, honored veteran and resident of Waterloo, Iowa, and Mr. St. George will be available post screening for a question & answer session.

The 2017 Solar Eclipse gathering in Southern Illinois, hundreds of hours of interviews, planning, and actual event, is provocatively captured throughout this engaging gesture. Again a question & answer session will follow.

, Dr. Mark Wagner, Director, SIU Center for Archaeological Investigation and President, Eastern States Rock Art Research Association, will deliver a lecture complimented by power point titled
Land Between the Rivers

Land Between the Rivers
presentation directly addresses research Dr. Wagner has produced on Rock Art of indigenous people, the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and Flatboat use prior to the development of steamboats. Material focused on Rock Art and Flatboats has direct application to history of the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

Volunteer of the Month
Donna Davis
|
|
Whether snow or sleet, rain or heat, the posters and rack cards must go out! Six times a year, no matter the weather, Donna Davis, along with Sandy Winge and Janet Eggleston, delivers them for the Center for the Arts.
|
|
As Office Manager Karen Wilson says, “[The team] blankets the community with promotional material for our art gallery exhibits, Songwriters Showcase evenings, Sunday Salons, radio play productions, monthly play readings, and other special events. They visit almost 30 businesses downtown and on the east and west sides of Galena to advertise our upcoming programs. This is an invaluable service for us in getting our message out to the community, and we are so grateful for this dedicated team.”
Along with devoting time to the Center, Donna has been involved in a variety of activities since retiring and moving to Galena about fifteen years ago. Since she grew up on a dairy farm, it's not surprising that many of them are related to her concern for the environment and enjoyment of the outdoors. She and her husband have been members of JDCF for at least ten years, and Donna has helped present classes for the education programs at Camp Casper. For a week in July, these classes for kids, ages eight to twelve, focus on environmental subjects. At home, Donna's interest in nature is evident in her flower gardening. Also, on their property near Chestnut Mountain, she and her husband are trying to convert an acre of land into prairie.
Some of Donna's other activities include being Secretary of the Outreach Committee at Grace Episcopal Church and helping with the library's annual book sale. She enjoys doing embroidery and crewel work, and is part of a yarn ministry that knits hats, scarves, and cowls for charitable organizations.
With all this, Donna and her husband still find time to attend many of the events at the Center for the Arts. She enjoys them all and says, “I appreciate all the effort and time Carole and Jan have put into this. It has so much to offer—a multi-faceted center that is a true gem for the community.”

Broad Strokes
(a painting experience for adults and children)
Friday, March 06, 7-9 pm
|
|
Adult painters will have an opportunity to make their own artwork among the amazing artwork. Supplies and instruction will be provided. (16" x 20" canvases, acrylic paint, brushes, etc.) Artists can follow along through a guided piece or create something completely their own idea. Bring your own drinks & snacks. Class is limited to 30 adults.
A class for children (aptly titled) Kid Strokes combines guided drawing with ornithology to produce a masterpiece, using the physiology and beauty of birds and the uninhibited imagination of a child. Come spread your wings! This class is free and comes with guided instruction. Class is limited to 20 children.

Gallery Volunteers
Volunteering is good for the soul, and it really helps us to keep the gallery open four days a week.
Gallery hours are 1-4 pm for the fall and winter seasons.
Our
desk volunteers greet visitors, provide an introduction to the Center, accept payments for art and gift shop items (involves writing receipts, calculating tax, and processing online credit card transactions), and answer phone calls.
