Inclusion Newsletter
February 2020
THE CURRENT CAT
Hi everyone! My name is Steph Lowe. I am a graduate student in the College Student Development program. I am also the Assistant Coordinator for Departmental Initiatives - Honors House for Housing and Dining Services. I really enjoy learning about the stories of students, experiences, cultures and perspectives. I am really excited to be creating the monthly diversity newsletter for this academic year!

I hope you've had a great start to your spring semester! This month we'll be covering inclusive language and talking about the student spotlight and on-campus events related to social justice and diversity. If you have any input on topics to cover, would like to write an article, or participate in the student spotlight, please send your submissions to me! I would love to include your ideas and perspectives as well as hear any feedback you may have. All submissions and interest in being involved with the newsletter should be emailed to me at
INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE
The words we choose to use can have a lot of power. Take time to think about the words you use on a regular basis. Could any of them be hurtful to someone?

Change Your Language
  • It may seem like an easy fix to change out the words you're using if it can be hurtful to someone, but it does take some practice.
  • If you accidentally make a mistake or someone mentions something to you, take a minute and reflect, apologize and learn from that mistake.
  • Really think about the words you're using and be intentional about what you're trying to communicate.

Educate Yourself And Others
  • There are many online resources about using inclusive language.
  • You may not be aware that a word or phrase you use can be hurtful and have a different impact than you intended. Do your best to think of other words you can use instead that aren’t hurtful.
  • Continue the conversation about inclusive language with your friends, family and peers. If you hear them say something, take a moment to explain to them how that could be hurtful and the impact our language can have.

Resources
There are so many online resources that talk about inclusive language in many aspects. Listed below are an article and two videos that I really enjoyed.

NEWSLETTER INVOLVEMENT
Student Input
Do you enjoy writing for fun, or are you passionate about a particular topic related to diversity? Please consider sending in submissions for the spring semester newsletter; we would love to hear from you! You can pick any topic you're passionate about, as long as it relates to diversity or social justice in some capacity. You can choose how you would like to relate that information by sharing your own story, researching, finding an article, showing a video or even coming up with your own creative idea.

Recommendation Spotlight
Another opportunity to get involved with the diversity newsletter is our recommendations page. Each month, I highlight one or two people from K-State which can include students, staff, faculty, etc. You will be featured in our recommendations section, and it will be a space for you to share your favorite article, documentary, book, video, website, podcast, etc. that you think others might enjoy as well.

All submissions can be sent to my email at  slowe33@ksu.edu.  Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions!
