WASH Rotary Action Group Newsletter - November 2020
World Toilet Day - November 19
In 2012, the United Nations officially recognized November 19 as World Toilet Day as a way to bring awareness to the global sanitation crisis. It is estimated that 4.2 billion people live without safely managed sanitation and around 673 million people practice open defecation.

This year the theme is "Sustainable Sanitation and Climate Change." You can find some excellent resources in multiple languages at WorldToiletDay.info. in addition to posters and graphics there are toolkits and social media resources.

The UN Site for World Toilet Day has resources on World Toilet Day, but emphasizes the UN Sustainability Goal 6 which is targeting Clean Water and Sanitation for all by 2030.

Fun Fact - The World Toilet Organization was founded on November 19, 2001. The same day as the first World Toilet Summit and the first World Toilet Day.

WASH Rotary Action Group Projects
The WASH Rotary Action Group Project Page continues to grow with a variety of projects from around the globe. The project list provides Rotary members with a place to obtain expert advice and obtain financial support from other clubs for major project grants. Future newsletters will include a featured project and a few additional projects from the WASH Rotary Action Group Project page.
Building on Success
The success of future projects is generally based on the successful completion of a past project. The Rotary Club Toowong, Brisbane Australia, is looking for Clubs and Districts to partner with them to bring significant WASH projects to Papua New Guinea (PNG).

As you read through the excellent summary on the
Supurunda Water Supply Project, which involved a partnership with the Rotary Club of Goroka, PNG, it is very impressive to see the far reaching impact of this project on eight villages, completed with under $70,000.

The Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG) is pleased to consider partnerships with any corporate supporter. Due to the unique attributes of water sources and water provision, acceptance of corporate support does not imply an endorsement of any particular water technology. Rotarians, Rotary clubs, and Rotary partners must evaluate any technology to determine if it is the best solution for the conditions where the program will be implemented. WASRAG can provide guidance about where different technologies work best, but Rotarians and Rotary clubs must make the final decision about how to implement their programs.
