Greenwich Girl Scouts
Tues, May 26 - Fri, May 29
Greenwich Girl Scouts (Troop 50681) are working towards their Bronze Award and will be collecting new and gently used books to distribute to our community. We ask you to see if you have any new or gently used books that you can donate to our book drive.  All reading levels are needed, preschool to adults. These books can be dropped off in the lobby of the Board of Education Building at 290 Greenwich Avenue between the hours of  10am - 3pm.  You can also contact 
 [email protected] for after hours drop off locations.  Books will be cleaned and separated by reading levels and distributed to our Greenwich Public School families.   

Perrot Library 
Mon, April 13- June 1st In honor of National Poetry Month, Perrot is sponsoring a haiku poetry contest open to students in grades 3 and up, as well as adults. We are seeking original haikus (3-line, 17-syllable poems) describing your experience with COVID-19-- the pandemic, the closures, and their impact on your daily life.

Poems will be accepted beginning Monday, April 13th, through Monday, June 1. Winners will be announced on Monday, June 15th.

Dear Riverside Parents,

We are in the home stretch, friends!

Just a few reminders today:
  • This Sunday, May 31st is the last day to purchase school supplies for the 2020-21 school year. See below for details on purchasing if you choose to participate.
  • The Riverside School Summer Read books have been announced! See below for the titles and have fun this summer with "Adventure in Toyland"!
  • The Greenwich PTA Council (PTAC) is hosting a Magic Show fundraiser to support the district--more details below in the District section. The show, which will feature professional magicians who have been featured on shows such as America's Got Talent and The Ellen Degeneres Show, will surely be an event to watch!
  • Next Wednesday, June 3rd at 3:00pm, the PTA will be holding an
    End of Year PTA Meeting via Zoom, with a special presentation on Guiding Students During Uncertain Times.

ORDER YOUR SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR 2020-2021

The PTA is once again sponsoring a school supply fundraiser for the upcoming school year. Order now and your child's box of supplies will be delivered directly to the classroom by the first day of school.

Everyone will have the chance at some point to collect headphones/earbuds from the school to use again next year.

Please visit the www.shopttkits.com online site  and enter account number  83285. The site will close this Sunday,  May 31st. Once again earbuds and headphones will available to purchase separately if new ones are required. Please email Jane Leonard at  [email protected] with any questions.

  • Weekly Treasure Hunt 6/1Happy June! June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month (yes, there is a day/week/month for EVERYTHING!). Draw/color a picture of your favorite fruit or vegetable and put it in your front window, then go for a walk/run and see how many you can find. Can you make a salad with all the fruits and vegetables you find?
  • Tuesday 6/2: On this day in 1875, Alexander Graham Bell makes the first sound transmission, an important step in inventing the telephone! 
  • Wednesday 6/3: It's both National Bicycle Day AND Global Running Day! You know what to do!
  • Thursday 6/4: Tie Dye Day! Don your favorite psychedelic wardrobe items to show your love for Riverside!

DISTANCE LEARNING RESOURCES 
GPS is offering a hub of resources and information for Distance Learning. You can view the information on the GPS Distance Learning Website. There is also a support team in place you can contact should you have any issues accessing content.

Students can reach out directly to teachers for assignment and content questions.

Check out RIVPTA.org for more ideas on implementing distance learning at home and for fun ideas to keep our kids occupied. Let us know what's working for you!

PLANTING INSPIRATION AND TIPS FROM MRS. BARRETTE
Start your vegetable garden! Watch Mrs. Barrette planting her organic vegetable garden, get inspired and get great tips.  Hopefully it inspires some Riverside families to get out and plant their own garden.

Stiff neck and shoulders? Back pains? Tight all over? Ask yourself, what's your posture like when using your digital device? With everyone working from home for the foreseeable future, we need to be more aware than ever of the right posture while using these devices. 

PTAC Health and Wellness has created a tip sheet to help students, parents and teachers use the correct posture at home. There are some easy and helpful tips to help you and the family stay healthy while working.

Please submit Health form for incoming K, 3rd graders or 3rd graders going to 4th that have not been submitted yet. Health Assessments should include Dental/HCT/HBG. 

All Vaccinations are to be up to date/completed or they WILL NOT be allowed to attend - No Exceptions. 

The CDC recommendations are children to continue receiving vaccinations during this time and to not miss. If you have them "already" please submit with vaccinations to Melissa Luiso [email protected]

5th Grade News
YEARBOOKS
We are looking forward to receiving our Yearbooks on or around June 9th and will aim to distribute them ASAP so that everyone has them before the last day of school.

MAGIC SHOW - FUN FOR THE KIDS AND SUPPORT GREEN WICH PTAC
Join us on Tuesday, June 2nd at 7:00 pm for a magical night with the Greenwich PTA Council virtual spring fundraiser to benefit local Greenwich PTAs in financial need due to the Coronavirus. You can watch the same performers from your favorite television shows like America's Got Talent, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show - streamed right to the comfort of your home! You can even be selected to be part of the show!

One ticket is good for the entire family.

You can also make a donation online after you buy your ticket or, even if you don't buy a ticket, by sending a check to Treasurer, Greenwich PTA Council, 255 Palmer Hill Road, Old Greenwich CT 06870. Make checks payable to Greenwich PTA Council. 100% of any donation is tax deductible and will go to the PTA's in need.

SUPPORT FOR BOE BUDGET
It is very important that our parents support the SOMR (Sense of the Meeting Resolution) to reduce the BOE budget cut mandated by the Town BET for the 2020-21 school year.  Speak up by writing to or calling RTM members, especially local district representatives. Our District 5 representatives are:

GREENWICH LIBRARY IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS
The  Greenwich Library would like to remind you, even though our buildings are closed, the Library is still open for business. Library staff are responding to phone calls and emails Monday-Friday from 9:00 am-9:00 pm. For Borrowing call 203-625-6524, for Reference call 203-622-7920, or  Ask a Virtual Librarian. We have put together a comprehensive "The Library at Home" page of  digital resources to support distance learning, including library card applications so both students and staff can begin exploring our vast Digital Library. 
GEA COVID-19 RESPONSE FUND
Consider donating to Greenwich Education Association's COVID-19 Response Fund. It's a safe way for GEA members to support our GPS families with food, school supplies, and special circumstances during the pandemic.

GEA will donate proceeds to keep food on the shelves of our students' families,  purchase school supplies to keep our students productive, and  send gift and greeting cards to our colleagues and paras who need our support in uncertain times.   Donate through PayPal on the GEA website   greenwicheducationassociation.org.  

If you become aware of a colleague or paraprofessional who could use GEA's support, please email brief details to GEA at [email protected] and include your phone number.
